A small drawing tool can help with the hardest first decision: choosing what to draw. Instead of asking “what should I draw?” and facing endless possibilities, start with one subject, one action, and one setting. Then make a few marks. The prompt is a starting point, not a set of rules for how the finished drawing must look.
Why starting can feel harder than drawing
“Staring at a blank page” is a familiar problem for artists, writers, designers, and illustrators. A University of Greenwich repository exercise document describes people facing that moment unsure what to write or draw. The difficulty is often not a lack of drawing ability; it is having too many decisions to make before the pencil touches the page.
A prompt makes the first decision smaller. It can name a subject, give it an action, and place it somewhere. You still choose the composition, shapes, materials, and style. That balance matters: enough direction to begin, but enough room to make the drawing your own.
Three ways to make the first mark
Start with a subject
A random idea such as “bird” gives you a starting point, but leaves the action and setting open. If that still feels too broad, add a verb and a place: “a bird stealing a sandwich at a bus stop.” You can write your own prompt or use a generator that combines a subject, action, setting, and sketch focus. Some generators also offer difficulty or time controls; those are features of the specific generator, not a requirement for getting started.

Give the drawing a short time limit
A timer can limit how long you deliberate. Set a short interval and draw only the largest shapes in your idea. When time is up, you can stop; continuing is optional. Timed drawing exercises can also focus on a particular skill instead of inventing a finished scene. For example, draw long arcs in one motion, or sketch a pose while paying attention to its line of action. These are practice suggestions, not a guarantee that a warm-up will improve everyone’s drawing.
Use your hand as the prompt
If inventing a subject feels like another hurdle, place a hand on a blank sheet and trace around it. Then turn the outline into a character, object, or pattern by adding details. The outline gives you a shape to respond to, so you do not have to invent the whole idea at once. This exercise works on paper, as do the cited timed drills.

A simple exercise to try now
- Choose a starting point. Write an idea with a subject, an action, and a setting, or trace your hand on a blank page.
- Set a short timer. Pick a duration that feels manageable; there is no required number of minutes.
- Draw the biggest shapes first. Leave small details, shading, and cleanup for later—or skip them.
- Stop when the timer ends. You can finish the exercise there or keep drawing if you want to.
The aim is not to produce a polished picture in one sitting. It is to replace an open-ended question with one doable action.
Which starting method should you choose?

Keep the tool small—and the choices yours
A useful starting aid should give you enough direction to begin without dictating the finished image. A prompt can supply a subject or a situation; a timer can put a boundary around the exercise; a warm-up can give your first marks a low-stakes purpose. None needs to decide the drawing’s style, composition, or meaning for you.
You can do these exercises in a sketchbook or on any available paper. A dedicated sketchbook is optional, not a prerequisite. The simplest version of the tool is often just one idea and a first mark.
