The best streaming service for your family is the one that carries the shows, films, sports, and other programming your household actually watches—at a price and set of viewing limits that work for everyone. Start with your family’s must-watch list, then compare catalog fit, ads, total monthly cost, simultaneous streams, device support, and children’s profile controls. There is no universally best service, and availability, catalogs, and terms vary by country and change over time.
Start with what your household wants to watch
Ask each person to name a few must-watch shows, films, genres, or sports. Note whether anyone needs live sports or news, and which programs are specifically for children. This is more useful than choosing a service because it is popular or carries a broad “family” label.
Then check whether the services available in your country carry enough of those titles. Catalogs can change, and the available evidence does not establish a complete title-by-title comparison across services. Check each service’s current catalog for the shows that matter to your household before subscribing.

In Common Sense Media’s 2025 U.S. study, children ages 0–8 watched television or video by download or streaming for an average of 31 minutes per day in 2024; 40% watched TV shows or movies through streaming platforms daily. These figures describe that age group in that study, not family viewing overall. Common Sense Media’s 2025 census

Compare the plans your family would actually use
Once you have a shortlist, compare the plan tiers that meet your needs—not just the starting price. Consider whether ads are acceptable, whether you need higher video quality or downloads, and how many people are likely to watch at the same time. Prices below are U.S. examples from service pages checked in October 2026; they are dated snapshots, not a promise of current pricing. Recheck the linked plan pages for current terms, billing details, and eligibility.
| Service and U.S. plan | Monthly price shown | Simultaneous viewing | Other relevant details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix Standard with ads | $8.99/month | 2 devices | 1080p is listed for Standard plans; see the plan page for plan-specific terms. |
| Netflix Standard | $19.99/month | 2 devices | 1080p. |
| Netflix Premium | $26.99/month | 4 devices | 4K/HDR. |
| HBO Max Basic with Ads | $10.99/month | 2 streams | See the plan page for current plan details. |
| HBO Max Standard | $18.49/month | 2 streams | See the plan page for current plan details. |
| HBO Max Premium | $22.99/month | 4 streams; 2 for sports | Sports viewing has a lower simultaneous-stream limit than the general plan limit. |
Netflix’s U.S. plan page also notes that extra-member prices and eligibility can vary by country, package, or add-on. HBO Max lists annual plans and a discounted Disney+, Hulu, and HBO Max bundle; check its page for current terms. These figures are not directly comparable to Disney+ or Hulu plan prices: their pages describe multiple standalone, live-TV, and bundled options, and billing dates and tiers differ. Count simultaneous viewers before choosing a tier
Estimate how many people may stream at once, not just how many household members have profiles. A parent watching a show while two children stream different programs, for example, can exceed a two-stream limit. Check the plan’s definition of a stream and any special limits for sports; HBO Max Premium, for instance, lists four simultaneous streams generally but two for sports.

Check child profiles and controls directly
For a household with children, look beyond whether a service has children’s programming. Review the available profile controls, age or maturity ratings, and how the service handles content that is unrated or live. Controls vary by service and may be configured per profile.
- Netflix: Its help information describes kids profiles, maturity ratings, title blocking, PIN and profile locks, autoplay settings, and viewing history. Netflix parental controls
- Disney+: Its help information describes Junior Mode, Profile PINs, content ratings, restrictions on profile creation, and a setting for unrated or live content. Disney+ parental controls
Set up the controls you intend to use and check how they apply to every profile, especially if children share a television or device with adults. A service’s general age label is not a substitute for reviewing the controls and content available in your location.

Check the television and devices your family uses
Before subscribing, confirm the service works on the household’s television, streaming device, phone, or tablet. Hulu’s U.S. help page says a supported device and internet connection are required, but the reviewed information does not provide an exhaustive compatibility list. Check the service’s current device information for your specific model rather than assuming support. Hulu supported devices
Decide whether a bundle saves money for your household
A bundle is useful when its included services meet separate, recurring needs in your household. Add up the standalone plans you would otherwise pay for, compare them with the bundle’s price and included tiers, and account for ads and any features you would lose or gain. If you would rarely use one of the included services, a lower-cost standalone plan may be a better fit.

- Compare the specific plans you would use, including monthly cost, ads, stream limits, video quality, and downloads where relevant.
