Compare a spot Bitcoin fund’s current net fee, trading costs, price versus net asset value (NAV), and realized tracking over the same period. None of those measures substitutes for the others: a low expense ratio does not guarantee a tight bid-ask spread or the smallest difference from Bitcoin’s return.
Investors commonly call these products spot Bitcoin ETFs; SEC materials describe them as spot bitcoin exchange-traded products (ETPs). They hold bitcoin and issue shares representing a fractional beneficial interest in the product’s net assets. An ETP share is a security that provides market exposure, not direct ownership of bitcoin.
What to compare before choosing
Use the same dates and comparable data for every fund. Check the current prospectus for fees, and compare market trading measures at times and order sizes relevant to your own trading. The framework below helps separate fund expenses from the costs and differences that can arise when you buy, sell, or hold shares.
Recommended Free Tools
| Measure | What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Ongoing fee | Stated annual expense ratio, current net charge after waivers, waiver terms and end date | A waiver may make the current net charge different from the stated rate, and can expire. |
| Trading liquidity | Dollar trading volume and bid-ask spread | Volume is a snapshot; the spread helps show the cost of trading at a particular time and size. |
| Price versus NAV | Premium or discount of the share price to NAV, using the same date and observation time | Shares can trade above or below the value of the fund’s net assets. |
| Tracking difference | Fund NAV total return versus a named Bitcoin reference over identical dates | This is an observed return difference; the expense ratio alone does not measure it. |
| Structure and risk | Current prospectus disclosures on bitcoin custody, expenses, liabilities and product risks | These features affect what the share represents and how the product operates. |
How to compare fees
Start with the current prospectus, not an old launch announcement or a headline that says a fund is “fee-free.” Note both the stated annual expense ratio and the net fee currently charged after any waiver. Record the waiver’s conditions and expiry date so you can tell whether the rate is temporary or applies to all assets.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
For example, Invesco Galaxy Bitcoin ETF’s SEC-filed Form 10-Q for the period ended June 30, 2024 described a 0.25% annual sponsor fee and a temporary six-month waiver on the first $5 billion of assets beginning January 11, 2024. Those are historical terms for that product, not a current offer or a basis for ranking today’s funds. See the 2024 filing and verify current terms in the fund’s latest prospectus.
A lower ongoing fee can reduce one source of return drag, but it does not tell you what you will pay to trade or how closely the fund’s NAV return matched a Bitcoin reference over a selected period.

How to assess trading liquidity
Look at both dollar trading volume and the bid-ask spread. Volume indicates how much has traded over a stated period; the spread is the gap between the best displayed buy and sell prices. Conditions vary with the time of day and order size, so a fund with high volume is not automatically the cheapest to trade at the moment you place an order.
Grayscale’s issuer comparison reports 30-day dollar volume and average bid-ask spread among its measures. Its observations are dated August 31, 2025, so they are a historical snapshot, not today’s ranking. Use its issuer comparison only with that date qualification, and seek current, comparable market data before making a present-day comparison.

Launch-day activity is not a substitute for ongoing liquidity data. Strategy Inc.’s 2025 Form 10-Q reported $4.6 billion in trading volume on January 11, 2024, the first trading day for these products. That is a historical launch-day figure reported in a company filing, not an SEC statistic or a current liquidity measure. The filing gives the context for that figure.
Check the share price against NAV
NAV is the value of a fund’s assets minus its liabilities, calculated per share. Compare an ETP’s market price with NAV for the same date and time: a premium means the share price is above NAV, while a discount means it is below.

Creation and redemption activity can help keep market prices near NAV. SEC-filed risk disclosure explains that disruption or difficulty in that process can weaken arbitrage and allow a larger divergence. A premium or discount is therefore a separate check from trading volume and the bid-ask spread; do not assume one measure guarantees the others are favorable. See the SEC-filed product disclosure.
Measure tracking difference using matching data
To evaluate how closely a fund followed Bitcoin, compare its NAV total return with a clearly named Bitcoin reference over precisely the same start and end dates. Use the same return convention for both series and state the benchmark and interval. Comparing a fund’s market-price return with a benchmark, or using different date ranges, can mix tracking with changes in the share’s premium or discount.

Expenses and liabilities affect the fund’s exposure, but the expense ratio is not itself a measured tracking difference. The sources available here do not establish a current, consistent tracking comparison across funds, so there is no supported current winner on this measure. Calculate or obtain comparable NAV and benchmark returns before treating a small historical difference as evidence of future performance.
Understand the product and its risks
SEC materials describe spot bitcoin ETPs as products that purchase and own bitcoin and issue shares representing a fractional beneficial interest in the product’s net assets. The shares give exposure through securities trading; expenses and liabilities affect the result. They are not the same as holding bitcoin directly. Review each product’s current prospectus for its own custody arrangements, fees, liabilities, and risk disclosures.
On January 10, 2024, the SEC said it approved exchange listing and trading of a number of spot bitcoin ETP shares. That approval concerned exchange listing rules; it was not a judgment that Bitcoin is suitable for any particular investor or that one fund is better than another. In his statement that day, SEC Chair Gary Gensler called Bitcoin “a speculative, volatile asset.” The characterization is his regulatory statement, not an endorsement or a complete account of every product’s risks. Read the SEC statement and the relevant prospectus.
Quick Recap
A practical comparison process
- Shortlist products available through your brokerage. Confirm that the brokerage offers the ticker and check its own fees and order controls; access and trading terms are brokerage-specific.
- Read each current prospectus. Record the stated annual expense ratio, current net fee, waiver conditions and expiry, plus product-specific custody and liability disclosures.
- Compare market measures on a consistent basis. Note the observation date and time for dollar volume, bid-ask spread, and premium or discount to NAV. Consider the order size and trading time that matter to you.
- Compare NAV returns with a named Bitcoin reference. Use identical dates and a consistent total-return convention; do not use the expense ratio as a proxy for measured tracking.
- Recheck time-sensitive figures before acting. Fees and waivers can change, and volume, spreads, and premiums or discounts are market observations rather than permanent product characteristics.
