Choose an amphibious robot by starting with the route and the measurements—not the word “small.” First decide whether the vehicle must leave the water and cross a shore, mudflat, or other terrain. Then match its operating limits, complete sensor and sampling payload, energy budget, navigation, and field-support needs to the mission. If the work stays on the water, a surface robot may be simpler; amphibious mobility is worth its added design trade-offs only when land-water access is necessary.
Decide whether you need amphibious mobility
A surface robot can be a better fit for monitoring that takes place entirely on the water. A vehicle that also crawls or drives over land has to balance terrestrial traction against water efficiency: wheels or legs suited to soft ground add mass and drag, while a streamlined hull may struggle on rough banks. Sealing and energy use also matter across both modes. The technical overview of amphibious robotics discusses these interacting design constraints and the difficulty of navigation in shallow, turbid water (technical overview).
Map the actual route, including where the robot must enter or leave the water. Identify whether it needs to cross a sloping bank, rocks, vegetation, mud, or tidal flats. A platform is only useful if it can manage the transition zone as well as the water and terrain on either side.

Define the environment and operating envelope
Describe conditions at the intended site before comparing specifications. Record water depth, current, waves, wind, temperature, salinity, turbidity, vegetation, shoreline slope and material, obstacles, and how the vehicle can be recovered. Check that the candidate’s stated operating limits cover the actual conditions and configuration; a limit published for one craft does not automatically apply to another.

HydroNet, a European Commission project, used different platforms for different waters: a flat-bottom craft for river and lagoon work and a catamaran for coastal monitoring. Its report also gives a maximum sea-state condition for those project robots, illustrating why the operating envelope must be checked against the specific platform (European Commission CORDIS HydroNet project results).
Work backward from the measurements and samples
List each measurement, whether it must be collected continuously in situ or from a discrete sample, and the depth and sample volume required. Include calibration, cleaning, sensor mounting, and data-export needs. The measurement plan determines what the vehicle must carry; a sensor’s compatibility, depth rating, interface, and mounting should be confirmed for the exact robot configuration.
HydroNet reported using a YSI 6920V2 probe for temperature, turbidity, pH, dissolved oxygen, oxidation-reduction potential, and conductivity, alongside sampling hardware for different depths. This is an example of a monitoring payload described in a project report, not confirmation of current availability or compatibility with another platform (CORDIS report).

A separate University of Minnesota record describes Aquapod, a 2012 research contribution: a small amphibious robot with buoyancy control and a detachable fluidic sampling unit for subsurface liquid collection to a maximum depth of ten metres (University of Minnesota Experts record). It is a research example, not evidence that the robot is currently sold.
Size the complete payload and deployment burden
Do not count only the sensor. Include the sampler, batteries, communications equipment, enclosure, mounts, and any supporting structure in the payload estimate. Ask for the allowable payload in the configuration you intend to use, and verify that the full load leaves adequate buoyancy and stability. Also consider access for sensor cleaning and calibration.
Define what “small” means for your team: a vehicle that fits in a car, can be carried by a particular crew, launches without lifting equipment, or meets a payload or cost limit. Published dimensions alone do not establish field portability. For example, Eco-Mar’s vendor page lists the MAR rover at 1200 × 1300 × 1200 mm, with empty vehicle weight below 200 kg and sensor payload up to 5 kg. Those vendor-stated figures show why size and portability need to be judged against the deployment crew and equipment (Eco-Mar MAR technology page).

Estimate energy, endurance, and coverage
Budget energy for the whole mission: transit, stationary sampling, repeated starts, land movement, communications, and a return reserve. Swimming and crawling can draw power differently, so an endurance figure from water-only operation may not represent a mixed land-and-water route. Check whether stated endurance includes the payload, sampling activity, and operating conditions you expect.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHydroNet reported a minimum of six hours of continuous operation and minimum ranges of 15 km for its flat-boat and 20 km for its catamaran. The same project report lists a maximum sampling depth of 50 m for catamarans only. These are historical specifications for those project configurations, not universal benchmarks or current guarantees (CORDIS HydroNet project results).
Check navigation, control, and communication by mode
Evaluate manual, remote, waypoint, and autonomous control separately. Ask how the robot localizes on land, on the water surface, and underwater; what obstacle sensing works in turbid water or vegetation; what happens after communication loss; and whether it stores data onboard for later retrieval.

HydroNet reported GPS and compass equipment, radio and Bluetooth communications, and obstacle-avoidance components including a laser scanner, sonar, and altimeter. These are features reported for that project, not a checklist of equipment on every amphibious robot (CORDIS report). Satellite positioning is unavailable underwater, while shallow, turbid, wave-driven water can further complicate navigation, as the amphibious robotics overview explains (technical overview).

The documented examples below represent different kinds of evidence and intended use. They are not a like-for-like product comparison.
| Example | What the source describes | What to investigate for your mission |
|---|---|---|
| Aquapod | A University of Minnesota record describes a small amphibious research robot with buoyancy control and a detachable unit for subsurface liquid sampling to a maximum depth of ten metres. The record is for a 2012 research contribution (University of Minnesota Experts). | Prototype maturity, sampling depth and repeatability, payload, autonomy, and field support. |
| HydroNet flat-boat and catamaran | A European Commission project report describes distinct river and coastal monitoring craft, with sensing, sampling, range, and endurance specifications (CORDIS project results). | Water conditions, draft, payload, sampling depth, endurance, range, launch needs, and crew burden. |
| MAR amphibious rover | Eco-Mar’s vendor page describes a rover for monitoring, inspection, and surveying, with dimensions and a stated sensor-payload limit (MAR technology page). | Terrain fit, water propulsion configuration, payload, transport, operating limits, and current availability. |
For any actual candidates, compare the same axes: mission fit, operating envelope, payload and buoyancy margin, sensing and sampling depth, autonomy and recovery behavior, endurance and range, portability, data workflow, serviceability, and total ownership cost. A project report and a vendor page do not establish comparable maturity or reliability.
Plan maintenance, support, and deployment rules
Before committing, verify transport and launch equipment, battery swapping, corrosion protection, seals, cleaning and calibration routines, spare parts, software access, training, repair turnaround, and warranty. Salt water makes corrosion resistance especially relevant, and amphibious systems depend on sealed structures and motors. Current warranty, service, price, and supply status are not established for the named examples.
Check applicable rules with the project’s safety officer and relevant local authority for the specific deployment, including telemetry, vessel operations, and sampling. ISO 25451:2026, Edition 1, published in May 2026, specifies guidance for seafloor mapping with uncrewed surface and underwater vehicles; its scope is not a general compliance standard for small amphibious monitoring robots (ISO 25451:2026 listing).
