Choose a second work monitor by matching its size and native resolution to your desk and tasks, then confirming that your computer, any dock or adapter, the cable, and the monitor can all support the display mode you want. A larger screen or higher pixel count is not automatically the better choice: desk fit, readable scaling, and connection compatibility matter too.
Start with the work you need the second screen to do
A second display can keep a reference document, email, or another application visible while you work on the primary screen. Think about the material you want to see at once: routine writing and browsing place different demands on screen area than reviewing large spreadsheets, documents, images, or charts.
There is no single size or resolution established as best for every office worker. The ranges below are Dell’s suggestions for matching monitor size to use, not ergonomic standards or a universal buying prescription. Treat them as a starting point, then consider your viewing distance and workspace.

Choose a size that fits your desk and viewing setup
Monitor size is measured diagonally in inches, as it is for televisions. Dell’s buying guide groups common sizes by intended use:

These are vendor-provided size bands, not a guarantee that a particular screen will suit your setup. Measure the available desk width and depth, account for your existing display, and consider whether the second screen will sit beside it or above it. A larger diagonal can provide more area, but only if the display fits your space and viewing arrangement.
Compare native resolution with screen size and scaling
Resolution is the number of pixels across and down the image. For example, 1920 × 1080 means 1,920 pixels horizontally and 1,080 vertically. More pixels can show more detail, but the number alone does not tell you whether text will be comfortable to read. Physical screen size, operating-system scaling, applications, viewing distance, and computer support also affect how a display works for you.

Resolution labels are not always used consistently. Dell’s cable guide lists FHD as 1920 × 1080, WUXGA as 1920 × 1200, QHD as 2560 × 1600, 4K as 3840 × 2160, 5K as 5120 × 2880, and 8K as 7680 × 4320. Some product listings use QHD for 2560 × 1440 instead. Compare the exact pixel dimensions in the monitor’s specifications rather than relying on the label alone.
When comparing two candidates, look at their physical sizes and native resolutions together. Then check that your operating system offers a scaling setting you can read comfortably and that your computer can output the resolution you plan to use. The best setting depends on your computer and applications; check their documentation for model-specific guidance.

Verify the entire video connection before buying
Check the computer’s video output, the monitor’s input, and every dock, adapter, and cable in between. The complete chain must support the resolution and refresh rate you want. Dell’s examples show why the interface version matters: its guide lists HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.2 at up to 4K (3840 × 2160) at 60 Hz, and USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode and DP 1.2 support at up to 4K at 60 Hz. These are examples from Dell’s guide, not guarantees for every device or cable; check the specifications for your exact equipment.
USB-C
A USB-C-shaped port does not automatically carry video. Dell’s guidance is direct: “Not all USB-C ports support video.” The port must support DisplayPort Alt Mode or appropriate Thunderbolt capability. Check your computer’s specifications or port markings before choosing a USB-C monitor or cable. A compatible connection may also carry data, audio, and laptop charging, but charging support and power delivery vary by model.

HDMI and DisplayPort
HDMI is common and carries audio as well as video. Dell’s guide lists HDMI 2.0 at up to 4K/60 Hz and HDMI 1.4 at up to 4K/30 Hz. DisplayPort also carries video and audio; the guide lists DisplayPort 1.2 at up to 4K/60 Hz, with newer versions supporting higher modes under the guide’s stated conditions. Match the version and implementation across your devices and cable to the display mode you need.

DVI and VGA
DVI is a legacy digital connection. Dell’s guide lists dual-link DVI at up to 2560 × 1600/60 Hz and single-link DVI at up to 1920 × 1200/60 Hz; DVI carries video but not audio. VGA is an older analog connection. Dell recommends using a digital option for a modern monitor when one is available.

Adapters and docks
An adapter may bridge different connector types, but confirm that it works in the required direction and supports your intended resolution and refresh rate. A dock or adapter adds another part to the connection chain, so check its specifications as well as those of the computer, cable, and monitor. Where practical, Dell recommends a direct matching digital connection.

- Workload: Does the screen area suit the documents, apps, or visual material you need to keep in view?
- Resolution: Have you checked the exact native pixel dimensions, not just the resolution label?
- Readability: Can your operating system scale the image to a comfortable size for your viewing setup?
