There is no single dish diameter that works for every location or frequency band. Choose one that meets the satellite service’s approved terminal requirements and link-performance needs, then confirm that your site can support a clear view, secure mounting, and accurate pointing. Frequency band and location matter, but neither alone determines the right size.
What determines the dish size you need?
A satellite dish is part of a link, not a stand-alone specification. The required diameter depends on the satellite service, the antenna’s operating band, whether the terminal receives or transmits, and the link performance the operator requires. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) identifies diameter, gain, and antenna pattern as characteristics to consider together; propagation prediction also accounts for factors such as frequency, earth-station elevation angle, antenna efficiency, and meteorological conditions. See the ITU’s Handbook on satellite communications and SpaceCap guidance.
- Service and satellite: Requirements vary by operator, satellite, and service.
- Frequency band and feed: The antenna and feed must support the frequencies used by the service.
- Receive or transmit role: A dish suitable for reception is not automatically suitable for transmission.
- Required performance: The operator’s required gain or link budget is the practical sizing threshold.
- Site and installation: Visibility, obstructions, mounting, environmental conditions, and accurate pointing affect whether the system can work as intended.
How to choose a dish size
- Identify the service and satellite. Check which provider and satellite you will use, and whether your terminal receives, transmits, or does both.
- Confirm the band and approved equipment. Ask the provider for its supported frequency band, antenna, feed, and terminal requirements.
- Get the performance requirement. Request the required antenna gain, minimum diameter, or other link-performance specification from the operator or a qualified installer. Do not derive a diameter from the band alone.
- Assess the actual site. Confirm that the antenna can see the satellite and that there is a suitable place to mount it and keep it accurately pointed.
- Compare compatible candidates. Check each antenna’s band and feed, gain, radiation pattern, mount, physical constraints, and suitability for local environmental conditions. Treat operator compatibility as a purchase requirement.
- Apply transmission requirements if relevant. For a transmitting earth station, follow the operator’s and applicable regulatory requirements for antenna pattern and off-axis performance. Do not assume a receive-only consumer dish is appropriate for transmission.
What published dish-size examples mean
The ITU’s 2002 Handbook on satellite communications gives examples for satellite news-gathering (SNG) systems—not universal home-installation recommendations. In those examples, analogue SNG systems use diameters varying between 3 m in the 6/4 GHz band and 2 m in the 14/11 GHz band; digital SNG systems use 1.2 m in the 6/4 GHz band and 0.75 m in the 14/11 GHz band. These figures describe the handbook’s SNG examples and should not be used to size a household dish without the service’s requirements. The handbook also discusses the trade-off between antenna gain and RF output power for e.i.r.p., and the need to maintain pointing under environmental operating conditions.

A precise recommendation requires information specific to your service and installation: the provider and satellite, your location and site visibility, the operating band, whether you receive or transmit, the required availability, and the service’s link-budget or approved-terminal specifications. Without those inputs, naming one exact diameter would be false precision. Ask the operator or a qualified installer to confirm the required equipment before you buy.
