Choose a pool supply retailer by checking authorization for the exact brand and product, confirming that parts or equipment fit your pool, and comparing the full delivered price and item-specific return terms. For major equipment, also find out who can help with sizing, installation, and warranty questions. These checks work whether you are looking for a local dealer or searching for “legit online pool supply stores.”
Check whether the seller is authorized for the product you want
A retailer’s general claim that it is an authorized dealer is not enough to establish authorization for every brand, product, or sales channel. Look up the seller in the manufacturer’s current dealer locator or authorized-reseller list, and confirm that the listing applies to your country and the item you plan to buy.
Requirements can be specific. Maytronics says online stores selling its Dolphin robotic cleaners must apply for and renew authorized status annually. Its authorized online reseller information is labeled last updated November 2025, so check the current listing rather than relying on an old screenshot or a retailer’s claim alone.
For equipment, ask the manufacturer or seller how buying through that channel affects support and warranty handling. Pentair describes its TradeGrade policy as applying to covered equipment correctly sized, purchased from, and installed by a pool professional. That policy is a reason to check the terms for the exact product—not a rule that applies to every brand or every purchase.

Confirm parts compatibility and equipment support
For replacement parts
Match the part to the make and model of the equipment, not just to a broad description such as “pool pump seal” or “filter cartridge.” Check the equipment’s model number, the replacement part number, and any compatibility notes. If the listing is unclear, ask the retailer to confirm the match in writing before ordering.
For major equipment
Pumps, filters, heaters, and other installed equipment can require correct sizing and installation. Ask whether the retailer can help identify the right model for your pool and whether it provides installation guidance or routes warranty questions to the manufacturer. A local pool professional or authorized dealer may be useful when sizing or installation is uncertain; Pentair’s TradeGrade guidance specifically points to professional sizing, purchase, and installation for covered products.

Pool dealers can also provide product information and help with manufacturer warranty programs. Federal Trade Commission case materials from 2011 and 2012 describe those dealer functions, but they are historical industry context, not a guarantee that a particular retailer offers that support today. Certification can be a useful product check, but it is not a blanket endorsement of a retailer or its full catalog. NSF describes certification for pool and hot tub components and chemicals, with relevant categories including filters, drain covers, pumps, disinfection equipment, water treatment chemicals, chemical equipment, and water-quality test devices. NSF/ANSI/CAN 50 covers pool, spa, hot tub, and other recreational water equipment. Check the specific product and its certification status rather than assuming that a category listing or retailer claim covers the item.

NSF describes laboratory testing, production-facility audits, and retesting in its pool and hot tub products certification information. For pool and spa treatment chemicals, NSF/ANSI/CAN 50 Annex R addresses potential health effects and oral, inhalation, and dermal exposure routes, as explained in its pool and spa chemicals certification information. Certification does not tell you which chemical is appropriate for your water: follow the product label and applicable local requirements.
If you are shopping for a pool water test kit, check what it measures and follow its instructions. NSF includes water-quality test devices within the relevant product scope, but certification is a product-specific check—not a substitute for choosing a kit that meets your testing needs.

Compare the delivered price, not just the listing price
Before checkout, add the item price, shipping, freight, and any other disclosed charge. Check whether a price-match promise applies to the exact product and seller, and read its exclusions. Retailers may set thresholds, charge freight for oversized equipment, or exclude particular items. Doheny’s site is one example of retailer claims and policies to inspect; its terms are not a standard for the rest of the market.
Read the return policy for the item you are buying
Do not infer an item’s return rights from a general “easy returns” message. Before ordering, look for terms covering:

- Opened or unsealed chemical containers
- Special-order or non-stock parts

- Oversized items and return freight
- The deadline, required condition, and process for requesting a return
Keep the order confirmation, product listing, manufacturer documentation, and any written compatibility or warranty guidance. If an item arrives damaged or proves incompatible, those records help clarify what was promised and which party to contact.
Check availability and communication before you pay
Look for an item-specific stock status and a realistic dispatch estimate. If the product is backordered, find out whether the retailer will contact you before substituting an item or changing the expected ship date. Check that you can reach the seller through a clear support channel for order, fit, and return questions. There is no universal service benchmark established here; judge the retailer by the clarity and specificity of the information it provides for your order.
Use a local professional when the purchase calls for it
Online ordering can suit straightforward supplies and clearly identified replacement parts. A local pool professional or brand-authorized dealer is a sensible option when equipment sizing, installation, or manufacturer-specific support matters. A local address alone does not prove authorization, just as an online storefront alone does not prove a lack of expertise: verify the seller and the service for the brand and product you need.
