Choose by setting first: Strikers 1945 is the aircraft-combat series, while Samurai Aces—called Sengoku Ace in Japan—uses a Japanese historical-fantasy setting. If you want more than one game, the Psikyo Shooting Library collections make that choice straightforward: Vol. 1 centers on Strikers, and Vol. 2 on Samurai Aces and related games.

Start with the setting you want

Choose Strikers 1945 for aircraft combat

Strikers 1945 is a vertical-scrolling shooter first released in arcades in 1995, according to Psikyo’s 2020 announcement. Its aircraft-centered premise makes it the natural first pick if you want a military aviation theme. The series-focused collection includes the original, Strikers 1945 II, and Strikers 1999.

Choose Samurai Aces for the Sengoku setting

Samurai Aces is the international name for Sengoku Ace. Its related games include Tengai (also known as Sengoku Blade) and Sengoku Cannon. If that historical-fantasy framing is more appealing than aircraft combat, start with this line or its collection.

The official product information establishes these differences in series and theme, but does not provide a controlled comparison of difficulty, responsiveness, or port quality. Those are not reliable reasons to rank one line above the other from the available product descriptions.

Psikyo lists physical PS4 editions of Shooting Library Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, released June 30 and July 28, 2022, respectively. The documented six-game split matches the Switch volumes: Vol. 1 is the Strikers-centered set, while Vol. 2 is the Sengoku-centered set with Gunbird and related games. Psikyo says the library is not available as a PS4 download compilation; individual games are handled separately. Physical stock, region, and language should be confirmed with the retailer.

Should you buy Strikers 1945 on its own?

Individual releases may suit you if you want to try just one title or prefer a platform-specific digital edition. Features are edition-dependent. Psikyo’s 2020 announcement described a Steam version based on the 2017 Switch version, adding Score Attack, online rankings, and Steam achievements. It also listed six fighters and configurable difficulty, screen orientation, lives, and continues. A current Steam listing describes local two-player simultaneous play; do not assume every release has the same feature set.

There are also distinct Steam listings to account for. Psikyo announced that sales of a group of older licensed titles on Steam would end on October 31, 2025, while existing owners would retain access and sales on other platforms would continue. Separately, a Steam listing for Strikers 1945 names Zerodiv as developer and KMBOX as publisher and gives December 30, 2025 as its release date. Check the live store page and exact edition before purchasing rather than treating the older City Connection-era release information as proof of the newer listing’s features or availability.

Use your platform and format preference to decide

  • Want a physical multi-game collection on Switch? Pick Vol. 1 for the Strikers line or Vol. 2 for the Sengoku line and its neighboring series.
  • Want a physical collection on PS4? The same two-volume split is documented, but these are packaged collections rather than a downloadable PS4 compilation.
  • Want one game digitally? Individual releases exist in Psikyo’s catalog, but storefront availability varies by region and platform. Confirm the edition’s current listing and included features.
  • Want to play in a vertical orientation or with another player? Check the exact product listing: the portal describes rotation options and two-player play for the library, while individual-version features can differ.

For a physical purchase, search for the exact name “Psikyo Shooting Library Nintendo Switch” or its PS4 counterpart, then verify the volume, region, language, and edition. Publisher release pages establish the historical product and contents, not current retailer stock.
