Choose a power bank by comparing its energy in watt-hours (Wh) with the energy your devices need, then allow for charging losses. A headline mAh number alone does not tell you how much usable energy a bank will deliver. For laptops, capacity is only half the decision: the bank, USB-C cable, and laptop must also support compatible charging output.
How many mAh do you need in a power bank?
Start with what you need to charge and how long you will be away from an outlet. For a rough starting point, Belkin describes a 10,000 mAh / 37 Wh bank as suitable for about two phone charges or a phone-and-tablet recharge; its 20,000 mAh / 74 Wh example is aimed at several phone charges plus a tablet or a partial laptop top-up; and its 25,000 mAh / 92.5 Wh example is laptop-oriented. These are manufacturer category examples, not guaranteed results for every device or bank. Belkin’s power-bank capacity guide
| Typical use | Example capacity | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency top-up or pocket carry | 2,500–5,000 mAh (9.3–18.5 Wh), Belkin category example | Lower capacity and weight; suited to phone top-ups and earbuds. |
| Daily phone carry | 10,000 mAh / 37 Wh, Belkin example | Belkin describes roughly two phone charges or a phone plus tablet recharge. |
| Several devices or occasional laptop top-up | 20,000 mAh / 74 Wh, Belkin example | Belkin describes several phone charges plus a tablet or a partial laptop top-up. |
| Laptop-oriented charging | 25,000 mAh / 92.5 Wh, Belkin example | Higher-energy category; Belkin lists USB-C PD output up to 140 W, but that is not a universal laptop requirement. |
| Fewer loose cables to pack | 10,000 mAh / 37 Wh integrated-cable category, Belkin example | Built-in cable is convenient; compare capacity and output as well as the cable arrangement. |
Use these categories to narrow the search, not to promise a fixed number of recharges. Actual results depend on the specific power bank and device, conversion losses, charging conditions, and whether the device is in use.

mAh measures electrical charge, while Wh accounts for both charge and voltage. That makes Wh the more useful way to compare stored energy across batteries with different voltages. To convert a capacity stated in mAh, use the battery’s nominal voltage:

Wh = (mAh ÷ 1,000) × voltage
For example, 20,000 mAh at a nominal 3.7 V equals 74 Wh at cell level. The Federal Aviation Administration uses voltage multiplied by amp-hours for its Wh calculation, and Anker Support gives the same 20,000 mAh at 3.7 V example. FAA passenger battery guidance; Anker’s capacity explanation
When available, use the power bank’s printed Wh rating rather than deriving a comparison from a headline mAh figure. The stated mAh may describe the internal cells, while a separate rated output capacity can be lower because the bank converts voltage to USB output.

Allow for energy lost during charging
You should not expect all cell-level energy to reach a device battery. The power bank uses some energy in converting its cell voltage to USB output, and the receiving device also consumes energy during charging. Anker illustrates the conversion step by assuming 82% efficiency: 74 Wh at the cells becomes about 60.7 Wh after conversion, before device-side losses. That is a worked example, not a universal efficiency rating or a guaranteed usable capacity for other banks.
For a rough estimate, divide the device energy you need by the bank’s Wh, then allow extra capacity for conversion and charging losses. This can help compare options, but it does not produce a dependable exact charge count: device use during charging and other conditions affect the result.

Check output compatibility, especially for a laptop
A bank can store plenty of energy and still be unsuitable for a laptop if its output does not meet the laptop’s charging requirements. Before buying, check that the laptop supports charging through the port you plan to use, then compare the laptop maker’s USB-C charging requirements with the power bank’s USB-C Power Delivery (PD) output and the cable’s rating. The bank, cable, and laptop need compatible charging support; capacity alone cannot make an incompatible setup work.
- Phone or tablet: Confirm the bank has the port or cable connection you need and supports an appropriate charging mode for the device.
- Laptop: Verify the laptop accepts charging through that port and check the required USB-C PD wattage and profile against the bank and cable specifications.
- Multiple devices: Check the bank’s multi-port output specifications; a stated maximum does not by itself establish what each port can deliver when several devices are connected.
- Wireless charging: Check the charging method and device compatibility in addition to capacity. Wireless charging does not remove the need to match the power bank to the device.
Belkin’s laptop-oriented category spans 20,000–25,000 mAh and lists USB-C PD output up to 140 W. Treat that as a product-category example, not a requirement for every laptop.

Consider size, ports, and travel rules
Compare more than energy: weight and size, likely top-ups, supported output, port and cable fit, and travel limits all affect whether a bank suits your routine. A smaller bank is easier to carry but stores less energy; an integrated cable can reduce what you pack but does not guarantee a particular output or charge count.

Power banks are spare batteries and must be carried in carry-on baggage, not checked baggage. Airlines may impose stricter limits, so check the current rules for your airline and route. Quick Recap
A practical way to choose
- List your charging task. Decide whether you need an emergency phone top-up, a day of phone and tablet use, or laptop work away from outlets.
- Find your devices’ battery energy. Look for Wh in the official specifications. If only mAh is listed, use the device battery’s nominal voltage to convert it to Wh.
- Compare power-bank Wh. Prefer the printed Wh rating. If you must convert a mAh figure, use the bank’s nominal cell voltage rather than assuming that mAh alone makes two banks equivalent.
- Allow for losses. Treat the energy comparison as a starting estimate, not an exact recharge count, and leave headroom for conversion and device use while charging.
- Verify the charging path. Check the device port, required charging protocol and wattage, power-bank output, and cable rating. This step is essential for laptops.
- Check portability and travel limits. Balance energy against weight, size, cable convenience, and the rules that apply to your airline and route.
