Choose a portable power station by checking three things in order: whether its outputs can run your gear, whether its usable energy can cover the planned shoot, and whether you can carry and recharge it where you’re filming. Add up the loads that will run at the same time, compare them with the station’s continuous output, then estimate energy use in watt-hours. Leave margin for charging losses and real-world conditions. If you’ll fly to the shoot, check the battery limit first: the FAA says batteries above 160 Wh are forbidden aboard passenger aircraft, which rules out the full-size examples below.

1. List the gear and its power requirements

Start with the kit you actually plan to use. Include camera-battery chargers, laptop, monitor, lights, audio equipment, phones, and drone charger. For each item, record its input type, connector, and rated power draw from its label or manual. Also note which devices must operate simultaneously and which can take turns charging.

  • Running equipment: Lights, monitors, and other devices draw power for as long as they are on.
  • Charging equipment: A charger’s input draw can differ from the camera battery’s capacity or the output it delivers. Use the charger’s input rating when estimating station load.
  • Variable loads: Lights may have different power settings, and laptops may draw more under heavy workloads. Use the highest realistic draw for the planned setup rather than assuming every device stays at its minimum.

For devices powered at the same time, add their wattage. That combined load is the first check against the power station’s output rating.

2. Match output ratings and ports to your equipment

A station must support both the total power demand and the particular connections your devices use. A USB-C socket by itself does not tell you how much power it can supply.

For AC-powered gear

Compare the simultaneous AC load with the station’s continuous AC output. Do not use the surge rating as if it were available continuously: surge is a short-duration peak, not the normal operating rating. If lights, chargers, or other equipment have startup demands, confirm the station’s surge capability and the equipment’s requirements.

For USB-C, DC, and other ports

Check USB-C Power Delivery (PD) wattage per port and any combined-port limit. Confirm that the station supports the charging standard and wattage your laptop or other device needs. For DC-powered gear, verify voltage, current, polarity where applicable, and connector fit; a matching-looking plug does not establish electrical compatibility.

Make a short port plan before buying: assign each device to an AC, USB-C, or DC output, and check whether using several ports at once changes their available power. Prefer direct DC or USB-C charging when your gear supports it and the station’s specifications meet the device requirements; using AC for a charger may add conversion losses.

3. Estimate how many watt-hours the shoot needs

Watts describe the rate at which a device uses or receives power; watt-hours (Wh) describe energy. For a simple estimate, multiply a device’s power draw in watts by the number of hours it will run. Add the energy estimates for the devices you expect to use during the shoot.

Estimated energy (Wh) = power draw (W) × operating time (hours)

For example, a device drawing 60 W for four hours would use 240 Wh by this basic calculation. This is an estimate of energy demand, not a guaranteed runtime prediction: conversion and charging losses, battery condition, temperature, and actual device behavior affect how much stored energy reaches your gear. Leave headroom rather than choosing a station whose listed capacity only just matches the calculation.

4. Balance capacity against how you’ll move the station

More capacity can support longer or more power-hungry shoots, but it usually means carrying more mass. Decide whether the station will be backpack-carried, hand-carried, or transported by vehicle before comparing capacity figures.

Example station Manufacturer-listed capacity Manufacturer-listed output Manufacturer-listed weight Other listed details
DJI Power 500 512 Wh Maximum output power: 1000 W Not stated on the cited product page Two two-way 100 W USB-C ports supporting PD 3.0
EcoFlow RIVER 2 Pro 768 Wh 800 W total pure-sine AC output; 1600 W surge Approximately 18.2 lb 100 W USB-C input/output; up to 220 W solar input; LFP chemistry; manufacturer states 80%+ capacity after 3000 cycles under its terms
EcoFlow DELTA 3 1024 Wh 1800 W total AC output; 3600 W surge Approximately 27.6 lb Two USB-C outputs up to 100 W each; up to 500 W solar input; LFP chemistry; manufacturer lists 4000 cycles to 80%+ capacity and a five-year warranty

These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent tests. The RIVER 2 Pro is listed as lighter than the DELTA 3, while the DELTA 3 lists greater capacity and AC output. Neither difference establishes how long a particular kit will run: estimate from your equipment’s loads and schedule, and check whether the listed ports meet your needs. Specifications, regional versions, warranties, and availability can change; check the current product listing for the version you plan to buy. DJI Power 500, EcoFlow RIVER 2 Pro, and EcoFlow DELTA 3 are examples for comparison, not recommendations for every kit.

5. Check how you’ll recharge between shoot days

Compare the station’s AC, vehicle, and solar charging options with where and how you work. Check the listed charging input and rate against the time available between shoots; a large battery is less useful if you cannot replenish it on your schedule.

For solar charging, verify the panel’s voltage, current, and connector against the exact station model and regional version. A station’s listed maximum solar input does not mean every panel will be compatible or deliver that rate in field conditions.

6. Check field conditions, warranty, and transport rules

Before choosing a station, compare its operating-temperature range, weather protection, noise, warranty terms, and regional availability with the shoot location and setup. Do not assume a station is weatherproof because it is intended for outdoor or mobile use; check its specific rating and protect it accordingly.

Flying with a power station

The Federal Aviation Administration states: “Rechargeable batteries with a capacity of 0-100 Wh are allowed on passenger aircraft, while those with a capacity of 101-160 Wh require approval from the air carrier, and batteries exceeding 160 Wh are forbidden.” The FAA also says spare lithium batteries and power banks must be carried in carry-on baggage, not checked baggage. Individual airlines and international rules may be more restrictive, so check your airline’s current policy and applicable rules before travel. FAA passenger battery guidance.

The 512 Wh DJI Power 500, 768 Wh EcoFlow RIVER 2 Pro, and 1024 Wh EcoFlow DELTA 3 examples exceed the FAA’s 160 Wh threshold. They are therefore not passenger-aircraft options under this guidance; consider ground transport or arranging power at the destination instead.

A quick selection checklist

  1. Write down every device, input type, connector, and rated draw.
  2. Add the wattage of devices that will run simultaneously; compare the result with continuous output, not surge output.
  3. Check per-port and combined USB-C PD limits, DC compatibility, and the exact connectors required.
  4. Estimate energy from each device’s draw and planned hours, then leave margin for losses and variable conditions.
  5. Choose a capacity and weight that fit the way you’ll transport the station.
  6. Confirm recharge options, solar compatibility if relevant, field-condition limits, warranty terms, and airline or local transport rules.
