For most laptop users, a portable monitor in the 13–16-inch range with Full HD resolution is a sensible place to start. Choose a different size, resolution, or refresh rate when your work, travel setup, or gaming needs justify it—and confirm your exact laptop can drive the monitor at the mode you want.
Start with how and where you will use the screen
A portable monitor adds workspace, but its size affects how easily you can carry and set it up. HP describes portable monitors as usually 13 to 16 inches; that is a common range, not a strict standard. A screen at the smaller end may fit more comfortably alongside a laptop in a travel setup, while a larger one can suit a desk-first arrangement if its extra bulk is acceptable.
Before comparing specifications, consider where the display will sit and how you will transport it. Check the monitor’s viewable diagonal, physical dimensions, and weight against your laptop, bag, and available desk space. A nominal screen size alone does not tell you whether the full setup will be convenient to carry.
What size portable monitor should you get?
For a general-purpose laptop companion, begin by looking at 13–16-inch models. The best fit within that range depends on whether portability or workspace matters more to you. If you expect to use the display mostly on a desk, a larger panel may be worth considering; for frequent travel, compare the monitor’s actual dimensions and weight as carefully as its diagonal.

Also check how the screen will be supported. A built-in stand or case can make setup easier, but the practical result depends on its stability and the way you position the laptop and monitor. Confirm what is included rather than assuming a listing photo shows the supplied accessories.
Is Full HD enough, or do you need 4K?
Full HD for ordinary laptop work
Full HD (1080p) is a practical baseline for everyday productivity. Lenovo recommends at least Full HD for a portable monitor. It can provide a useful second workspace without making a higher resolution a requirement for routine tasks.

When a higher resolution may help
A higher native resolution can show more detail, which may matter for image work or other tasks where fine detail is important. It is not automatically better for every laptop setup: the laptop must support the display mode, and operating-system scaling may need adjustment so text and interface elements remain comfortable to read. Check the laptop’s supported output modes and the monitor’s resolution before choosing.

How much refresh rate do you need?
Refresh rate should match the work. If you mainly use the display for documents, browsing, or other productivity tasks, a standard refresh-rate option may be sufficient. Higher refresh rates matter more when smooth motion is important, particularly for gaming.

Do not choose by the monitor’s headline maximum alone. The maximum refresh rate may be available only at particular resolutions or through particular inputs. Your laptop’s graphics hardware, output port, and cable also affect the mode you can use. Compare the specifications as a combination
Size, resolution, refresh rate, connection, and power are related decisions. Use this framework to narrow your options, then verify the exact capabilities in the manufacturer documentation for your laptop and the monitor you are considering.

A USB-C connector does not, by itself, mean the port carries a video signal. Confirm display output in the documentation for your exact laptop model, then check that the monitor accepts the same connection and that you have the required cable. A USB-C-to-USB-C cable does not guarantee video if the laptop port does not support it.

Also check how the monitor is powered. Some setups may use USB-C for both video and power; others may require HDMI for video and a separate power connection. If the monitor draws power from the laptop, that affects the laptop’s power budget. HP advises checking that the laptop adapter can supply sufficient wattage when USB-C Power Delivery is in use. Do not assume the monitor will charge the laptop: that requires suitable documented power delivery from the monitor and charging support from the laptop.
Pre-purchase compatibility checklist
- Look up video-output support for the exact laptop port, not just its connector shape.
- Confirm the monitor’s required input and whether it needs a separate power connection.
- Check the supported resolution and refresh-rate combination at the monitor’s native resolution.
- Verify which cables or adapters are included and which you may need to supply.
- If using USB-C Power Delivery, check the power requirements and laptop-adapter capacity.
- Confirm whether laptop charging through the monitor is supported by both devices before relying on it.
