Choose a phone budget by first calculating what your real monthly finances can support, then comparing the full cost of the handset and service—not just the advertised installment. There is no single safe phone-price limit for everyone. Your ceiling depends on take-home income, essential expenses, savings, service needs, and the financing terms.

How much can you afford to spend on a phone?

Start with the money left after your actual expenses, savings contributions, and irregular costs—not gross income or a surplus you hope to have. Treat that remaining amount as a pool for discretionary spending, not as an automatic phone allowance. CFPB budgeting guidance recommends accounting for savings and less frequent expenses as part of a realistic spending plan. See the CFPB spending-plan guidance.

  1. Use take-home pay. Start with income available after taxes and other deductions.
  2. List actual spending. Check bills, statements, and spending records for housing, food, utilities, transportation, existing payments, and other regular costs.
  3. Include savings and irregular costs. Account for savings goals and expenses that do not arrive every month, such as medical, school, seasonal, or family costs.
  4. Set aside necessities and existing commitments. Only then estimate what is available for a phone purchase without compromising bills or savings.

CFPB consumer materials recommend comparing phone features and costs against needs, wants, and budget; they do not prescribe a standard percentage of income or a universally safe installment amount. The CFPB cell-phone-plan activity is a starting point for that comparison.

Set a total phone cap before looking at monthly payments

Decide the maximum you can spend overall before comparing “per month” offers. A device payment is only one part of the cost: include the upfront amount, scheduled device payments, financing charges or required fees, and service over the same period you use to compare alternatives.

For a fair comparison, choose a common period—such as the financing term of one offer—and add the phone and service costs for that period. If a plan’s price or term differs, make that difference visible rather than treating the handset installment as the whole cost. CFPB’s cell-phone comparison guidance and its plan worksheet emphasize comparing costs, features, fees, data needs, and coverage.

Compare phone and service options on the same terms

Use a table to record the same details for each option. Check current prices and terms with the seller or carrier; no particular phone price, carrier rate, or financing offer is established here.

What to compare What to record
Handset Cash price, down payment, and any required fees
Financing Number and timing of payments, length of the obligation, total of device payments, interest, and fees
Service Monthly charge, required data, and total service cost over the comparison period
Fit Features you need and whether the plan’s data allowance matches your actual use
Coverage Signal and service where you live, work, and regularly travel
What if plans change? Consequences of a missed payment, return, replacement, or switch to another provider

The CFPB worksheet recommends setting a budget and researching three carriers, with data use, streaming, coverage, features, fees, and costs among the comparison points. See the CFPB cell-phone-plan worksheet.

Look beyond a low monthly installment

A small scheduled payment may make an expensive phone seem manageable while extending the obligation or increasing the total cost. Before agreeing, check the full repayment schedule, financing term, interest, fees, late-payment terms, whether missed payments may be reported to credit bureaus, and how a return or replacement affects what you still owe.

Buy now, pay later (BNPL) is a form of installment borrowing. Some common BNPL plans divide a purchase into four or fewer payments, but providers’ terms differ. The CFPB advises consumers to review loan documents for costs and fees and notes that missed payments may lead to late fees. The FTC likewise advises checking the details of payment plans, including what happens after a missed payment and whether waiting to save could avoid extra cost. Read the current terms rather than assuming that “zero down,” “no interest,” or approval means the purchase fits your budget: CFPB guidance on BNPL and FTC guidance on payment plans.

Choose features and coverage before upgrades

Separate essential needs from features you would merely like. Think about the coverage you need in your regular locations and the data you actually use; then compare handsets and service plans that meet those needs. A more expensive phone or plan is not better value if its extras do not matter to you or push the total beyond your cap. The CFPB’s comparison activity frames the choice around needs, wants, and budget.

When waiting or choosing a lower-cost phone makes sense

If the full phone-and-service cost does not fit after necessities, existing commitments, and savings, do not stretch the budget to meet a monthly payment advertised by a seller. Consider postponing the purchase and saving toward the full cost, choosing a less expensive handset, or adjusting service needs. The FTC advises consumers to consider whether waiting could make it possible to pay the full cost rather than use a plan that costs more over time. In a July 6, 2021 blog post, the CFPB put the broader caution this way: “Just because you qualify for BNPL, or any other credit product, doesn’t mean you should use it.” That is general budgeting advice, not a statement about every provider’s current terms.
