Choose a tortoise only after you know its adult size, can provide a secure habitat and species-appropriate heat and UVB, and have access to a reptile veterinarian. These animals can live for decades, and the difference between a small Russian tortoise and a very large sulcata changes the space, cost, and long-term care commitment dramatically.

Start with the adult animal, not the hatchling

A young tortoise may look manageable, but its mature size and strength determine whether you can house it safely for life. The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine lists Russian, Hermann’s, Greek, red-footed, and sulcata tortoises among common pet species. Its examples illustrate how different their needs can be: Russian tortoises typically reach 5–8 inches, while sulcatas can reach 30 inches and males can exceed 100 pounds. University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine

Compare each candidate against the space, climate, equipment, diet, and veterinary care you can reliably provide—not just its purchase or adoption price. The Illinois veterinary guidance recommends as much space as possible and ideally both indoor and outdoor enclosures; its dimensions are recommendations for the species and context described, not a universal enclosure standard.

  • Adult size and strength: Can your secure enclosure accommodate a full-grown animal, including a large, powerful tortoise if you are considering a sulcata?
  • Climate and habitat: Can you offer safe outdoor time where appropriate, and provide indoor heat, UVB, shade, shelter, humidity, and barriers suited to the species and local conditions?
  • Diet: Are you prepared to provide the right foods for that species? Illinois notes that appropriate foods may include grasses, hay, greens, and flowers, but diets differ.
  • Veterinary access: Is there a reptile-knowledgeable veterinarian within reach?
  • Long-term care: Who will take responsibility if your circumstances change or you can no longer provide care?

How long do pet tortoises live?

Expect a commitment measured in decades, but do not treat one species’ lifespan as a rule for all tortoises. Illinois says red-footed tortoises can live at least 50 years and sulcatas as long as 80 years with proper care. UC Davis says desert tortoises may live 60 years or more in captivity. These are examples for particular species, not a guarantee for an individual animal. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine

Before acquiring one, make a realistic succession plan: identify who could provide housing, food, and veterinary care if you move, become ill, or cannot keep the tortoise. For a potentially 80-year commitment, a plan that depends only on the original keeper may not be enough.

What habitat and equipment will it need?

Tortoise housing is a species-specific system, not just a tank. Illinois identifies temperature, humidity, UV lighting, and photoperiod—the daily light schedule—as important care considerations. A secure outdoor enclosure may also be appropriate, depending on species and climate. Verify the setup for your chosen species with a reptile veterinarian rather than applying another species’ measurements or equipment instructions wholesale.

Indoor UVB, heat, and monitoring

UVB supports vitamin D synthesis, while a suitable heat gradient gives a tortoise access to different temperatures within its habitat. UC Davis’s desert tortoise guidance describes UVB lighting, bulb placement, day length, heat gradients, multiple thermometers, and safe substrate. Those detailed directions are for desert tortoises specifically. Its guide says the UVB bulb should be replaced every 3–6 months because output fades; replacement needs can vary by species and product. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine

A separate UC Davis California Veterinary Emergency Team guide, last updated January 2025, says indoor-housed tortoises need a bulb providing at least 5% UVB at approximately 12 inches, operated on a 12-hour cycle. Confirm the correct bulb, distance, and schedule for your animal and enclosure with current veterinary guidance; do not assume a generic “full spectrum” lamp provides UVB. Outdoor housing and security

Outdoor space can be valuable where climate and species make it suitable, but it must be designed for the animal. UC Davis’s desert tortoise guidance discusses barriers against escape and predators, as well as protection from excessive direct sun. Its dimensions and burrowing precautions apply to desert tortoises, not every pet tortoise. Plan for the selected species’ behavior and local weather, and ask a qualified veterinarian or experienced rescue for habitat guidance.

How much does it cost to keep a pet tortoise?

There is no reliable universal startup or annual total in the veterinary and government guidance cited here. Costs depend on species, local climate, enclosure design, electricity, food, veterinary fees, and whether the animal needs indoor housing. Build a local budget before choosing rather than relying on a generic online estimate.

How to check sourcing and local rules

Check both legality and provenance before acquiring a tortoise. WWF highlights conservation and trade concerns for sulcatas and advises prospective keepers to confirm that an animal is legally sourced and that keeping it is permitted in their jurisdiction. World Wildlife Fund

Adoption programs are not necessarily available everywhere or open to every applicant. Utah’s state wildlife agency, for example, describes a captive desert tortoise program with residency restrictions, an inspected enclosure, fees, and continued owner responsibility for veterinary costs. That is a Utah-specific program, not a nationwide adoption route. Check with your local wildlife agency and rescues for current rules, eligibility, and availability. Utah Division of Wildlife Resources

Are tortoises good pets?

A tortoise may suit a keeper who can provide species-specific housing, diet, lighting, and veterinary care throughout a long life. It is a poor fit if the decision depends on the animal staying small, an inexpensive setup, or a short-term commitment. Ask a reptile veterinarian and a reputable local rescue about the needs of the exact species you are considering before acquiring it.
