Choose the processor that matches your agent’s transaction pattern, geography, authorization model and data-control requirements—not simply the one that accepts cards. An agent buying a normal retail item, an agent using a delegated card token and a service making thousands of machine-to-machine micropayments require different credentials, controls, risk operations and settlement economics.
Before signing a contract, confirm five things in writing: the required card or machine-payment protocol is available to your merchant and region; every payment is tied to a verifiable customer mandate; spending limits and revocation are enforced outside the language model; your team can manage refunds, disputes and transaction records; and the total cost works for your transaction size and frequency.
Start by classifying the payment flow
The same AI agent may use more than one payment path. Classify each path separately because a processor that is excellent for ordinary card checkout may be a poor fit for high-frequency machine settlement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAgent-assisted card checkout
The customer remains in the checkout loop. An agent searches, selects an item and prepares the order, but the customer reviews the merchant, amount and delivery details and completes a conventional card payment. This is the least disruptive starting point because existing card acceptance, authentication and dispute processes still apply.

Ask whether the processor supports your current checkout, currencies, fraud tools and customer-authentication requirements. You still need controls that prevent the agent from changing the cart after approval or silently adding subscriptions, tips or expedited shipping.
Delegated card purchase
The customer gives an agent authority to purchase within defined conditions: for example, up to a dollar limit, from approved merchants, during a specified period or for a recurring service. The agent should receive a scoped token or payment credential, not the customer’s raw card number.
The processor must be able to record the mandate, bind each authorization to that mandate and require renewed confirmation when a purchase is outside the agreed scope. Visa describes confirmation for high-value or unusual purchases, while Mastercard describes programmatic spending controls for its machine-payment service. Treat those descriptions as capabilities to verify for your account, not as proof that every merchant can use them today.

Software agents pay one another or pay an API for many low-value services with little or no human interaction. Examples include an agent paying for a real-time data query, compute time, an API call or a digital asset. Frequency, latency and settlement cost can matter more than the average ticket.
Visa’s analysis says cards are well suited to proxy purchases and larger transactions inside existing merchant networks, while stablecoins can suit machine-native micropayments. That is directional analysis, not a universal rule. Your design may combine cards for larger purchases with a machine-native rail for small, frequent payments.
| Flow | Typical credential | Human involvement | Most important processor capabilities |
|---|---|---|---|
| Agent-assisted checkout | Existing card or wallet token | Customer confirms each order | Checkout integration, authentication, fraud screening and clear cart controls |
| Delegated card purchase | Scoped network or processor token linked to a mandate | Customer authorizes a policy; confirmation for exceptions | Mandate recording, token scope, policy enforcement, revocation and dispute evidence |
| Machine-to-machine micropayment | Machine-payment credential, stablecoin wallet or both | Usually none per transaction | Low latency, very low transaction cost, automated limits, machine identity, settlement and observability |
Define your requirements before comparing processors
Write a one-page payment specification. It prevents a compelling protocol announcement from distracting you from operational constraints.
Geography, currencies and acquiring
- List the countries where the merchant is established and where customers, sellers and agents operate.
- List settlement and presentment currencies, expected cross-border volume and whether local acquiring is required.
- Document your existing acquirer, payment facilitator or marketplace arrangement. A new agent feature may require a particular acquiring relationship.
- Check merchant-category restrictions. A processor may support an agent protocol generally but prohibit your category, digital goods, regulated services or unattended transactions.
Transaction shape
- Estimate value distribution, not just an average: minimum, median, maximum and the percentage above your customer-confirmation threshold.
- Estimate transactions per customer, per agent and per minute. A design that works for 100 daily purchases may fail at 100,000 API calls.
- Separate one-time purchases, subscriptions, usage billing, refunds and authorization reversals.
- Decide whether the system needs cards, bank methods, stablecoins or a combination, and identify which leg pays fees and foreign-exchange costs.
Agent environment and integration
Identify the agent runtime, tool framework, merchant checkout, order system and customer-support platform. Ask the processor whether the relevant capability is generally available, limited to named partners, in a pilot or merely announced. Confirm supported SDKs, webhooks, test credentials, idempotency, reconciliation files and rollback procedures.

Consent and policy
Describe what the customer is authorizing: a single order, a budget, a merchant category, a list of merchants, a time window or a recurring service. Specify when the agent must ask again. A prompt instruction such as “stay under $100” is not an enforceable payment control unless the payment system independently checks it.
Compare processors on the controls that matter
Use the following questions in a request for proposal and require a documented answer for your exact account, region and flow.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Acceptance and availability | Is the feature live for my legal entity, country, currencies and merchant category? Which acquirer and agent environments are supported? | Written eligibility statement, implementation guide and production rollout status |
| Authorization | How is customer intent represented, verified and attached to each transaction? What triggers renewed confirmation? | Mandate schema, authorization responses and exception rules |
| Credential security | Does the agent receive a scoped token instead of a raw credential? Can tokens be limited, rotated, paused and revoked? | Token lifecycle documentation, revocation API and audit events |
| Policy enforcement | Are merchant, amount, frequency, currency and time limits enforced by the processor or only by application code? | Server-side rule examples and failed-authorization behavior |
| Identity and proof | How are the customer, agent, merchant and device represented? Is cryptographic proof or authentication available? | Message format, key management and verification procedure |
| Risk and disputes | What fraud signals identify agent traffic? How are refunds, chargebacks and evidence handled at high volume? | Risk controls, dispute API, evidence requirements and retention periods |
| Merchant ownership | Who controls tokens, transaction records, customer history, loyalty treatment and post-sale communication? | Contract terms, data-export format and support responsibilities |
| Economics | What are processing, cross-border, conversion, token, network and operational costs for the actual ticket size and frequency? | Current written pricing and a modeled monthly invoice |
What the current agent-payment ecosystem provides
Capabilities are evolving quickly. The descriptions below identify what the named organizations have announced or published; they do not establish universal availability.
Stripe Shared Payment Tokens and network tokens
Stripe says it is expanding Shared Payment Token support for Mastercard Agent Pay and Visa Intelligent Commerce. Its description says network-issued tokens are scoped to customer intent and that the network handles credential translation, verification and authorization.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a merchant, the important questions are whether your legal entity and acquirer are eligible, which agent environments can request a token, what mandate data is required and how you revoke or narrow the token. Confirm those details directly with Stripe before treating the capability as production-ready.
Visa’s card specification for the Machine Payments Protocol
Visa says Stripe and Tempo announced the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP) as an open standard, and that Visa’s card specification extends MPP to card payments through the Visa Acceptance Platform. Visa describes the specification as processor-agnostic, giving merchants, payment service providers and acquirers a technical path for card-based machine workflows.
A processor-agnostic specification can reduce dependence on one gateway, but it does not guarantee that your gateway has implemented it. Ask for the supported version, certification requirements, test environment, settlement model and production countries.

Mastercard Agent Pay for Machines
Mastercard says Agent Pay for Machines is designed for programmatic, frequent, low-latency, low-value transactions. Its announcement describes credentialing, permissioning, spending limits and settlement across cards and stablecoins. Mastercard’s June 10, 2026 release listed more than 30 initial industry leaders, including payment and technology companies.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

That participant count is company-reported and does not guarantee general merchant availability. Verify which functions your processor actually exposes, whether stablecoin settlement is available in your jurisdiction and how the service handles refunds, disputes and accounting.
x402
Visa’s July 14, 2026 summary, citing Visa and Artemis, reported that x402 had processed roughly $15.0 million in adjusted volume across 109.6 million transactions since its May 2025 launch. The summary says x402 was incubated by Coinbase and Cloudflare and is stewarded by the Linux Foundation.
Those figures illustrate early ecosystem activity, not a forecast of adoption or a processor performance benchmark. x402 may be relevant when an agent pays an internet service directly, but you still need a settlement provider, wallet controls, accounting, sanctions screening where applicable and a way to connect machine payments to customer mandates.
MPP early activity
The same Visa summary reported that MPP settled about $25,000 across roughly 115,000 transactions in its first few weeks after launching in mid-March 2026. The launch window, transaction mix and measurement definition differ from x402’s figures, so the numbers should not be compared as market share or reliability metrics.
Visa Trusted Agent Protocol
Visa describes its Trusted Agent Protocol as a framework for secure agent-to-merchant communication and for distinguishing agents with commerce intent from malicious automation. Visa named Adyen, Stripe, Shopify and other companies as early feedback partners.
Partner participation or feedback is not proof of a live feature in your account. Ask whether the protocol is accepted by your target merchants, how an agent presents identity and intent, and what happens when a merchant cannot verify the agent.

Adyen’s merchant-control guidance
Adyen’s guidance emphasizes that an agent should act only after explicit, verifiable authorization—a mandate that secures the transaction and proves intent. It also emphasizes merchant control over payment flow, tokens, transaction data and the post-purchase relationship.
Use those principles as evaluation questions rather than as an independent ranking of processors. Confirm who owns the customer record, who sends receipts, who handles returns and whether you can export a complete event history if you change providers.
Recommended Free Tools
Design authorization that can be enforced
Build authorization as a separate service between the agent and the processor. The language model can propose an action, but a deterministic policy engine should decide whether payment is permitted.
- Capture the mandate. Record the customer, agent identity, merchant scope, permitted categories, maximum amount, currency, frequency, start and end dates and whether recurring charges are allowed.
- Issue a scoped credential. Give the agent a token or payment instrument reference limited to that mandate. Never place a reusable card number in prompts, logs or agent tool responses.
- Evaluate every request. Check amount, currency, merchant, category, cumulative spend, velocity, subscription status and remaining budget immediately before authorization.
- Escalate exceptions. Require a fresh customer confirmation for an amount, merchant or behavior outside policy. Record the confirmation and the exact data shown to the customer.
- Authorize with an idempotency key. Ensure retries cannot create duplicate charges when an agent or network times out.
- Log the decision. Store mandate version, policy result, token identifier, processor response, agent action and timestamps in an append-only audit trail.
- Revoke quickly. Provide an operator and customer control that pauses the token, cancels scheduled payments and blocks the agent without waiting for a support ticket.
Plan for fraud, disputes and post-purchase operations
Agent traffic changes the shape of risk. An agent can create many legitimate transactions faster than a human, while a compromised tool can repeat an instruction at machine speed. Visa notes that chargeback windows and evidence processes were designed around human-speed commerce; disputes become harder when agents transact at high volume.
- Set velocity limits at customer, agent, merchant and credential levels.
- Alert on unusual merchant categories, geography, currency, amount or timing.
- Keep the customer mandate, approval screen, policy evaluation and delivery evidence together so they can support a dispute.
- Define who issues refunds when the agent made a valid purchase but the customer changes their mind.
- Make support staff able to identify the agent, customer mandate and downstream order from one transaction ID.
- Test partial refunds, failed captures, duplicate webhooks, expired mandates and processor outages before launch.
Model the economics honestly
Do not assume that a low-value transaction is cheap simply because its face value is small. Model processor fees, network and token costs, foreign-exchange conversion, blockchain or stablecoin costs where relevant, minimum fees, dispute handling, reconciliation and the compute required to authorize each payment.
For micropayments, calculate the all-in cost per successful transaction and the cost of failed or reversed attempts. Batching, prepaid balances or periodic settlement may be more economical than charging a card for every API call, but those designs create balance, refund and consumer-protection obligations that must be documented.
No general fee schedule, approval-rate benchmark or chargeback outcome is established for the providers named above. Obtain a current written quote for your geography, acquirer, merchant category and expected volume rather than reusing a public headline rate.

Run a proof of concept before committing
A short, controlled pilot reveals gaps that a feature list will not.
- Choose representative cases. Include a normal purchase, an amount above the limit, a new merchant, a recurring charge, a refund, a duplicate retry and a revoked credential.
- Use production-like identities. Test the actual legal entity, currencies, merchant category, acquirer and agent runtime you intend to deploy.
- Verify the consent chain. Confirm that the customer sees the merchant and amount, that the mandate is stored, and that the authorization record can be retrieved later.
- Attack the boundaries. Attempt prompt injection, tool replay, token reuse, clock manipulation, webhook duplication and a sudden burst of transactions.
- Measure operations. Record authorization latency, decline reasons, webhook delay, reconciliation effort, support workflow and the time needed to revoke spend.
- Reconcile end to end. Match agent event IDs, processor transaction IDs, captures, refunds, fees and settlement deposits in your accounting system.
- Obtain written confirmation. Have the provider confirm production availability, supported countries, limits, pricing, dispute responsibilities and any partner or pilot dependency.
Common failure modes and fixes
The agent has a card number
Risk: A prompt, log or compromised tool can expose a reusable credential. Fix: Replace it with a scoped token or processor reference, redact logs and enforce limits server-side.
The policy exists only in the prompt
Risk: A model can misunderstand, forget or be manipulated into exceeding a budget. Fix: Evaluate deterministic rules immediately before authorization and reject requests that fail.
An announcement is mistaken for availability
Risk: A protocol or partner list may not cover your merchant, country or acquirer. Fix: Request an account-specific production confirmation and test credentials.
Micropayments cost more than the service
Risk: Per-transaction fees, conversion and operational overhead consume revenue. Fix: Model batching, prepaid credit or a machine-native rail, then test refunds and accounting before choosing.
Disputes cannot be explained
Risk: The team can see a charge but not the mandate, agent decision or delivery result. Fix: Use one traceable identifier across the policy engine, processor, order system and support tools.
Revocation is slow
Risk: A runaway agent continues spending while humans search through systems. Fix: Provide an immediate kill switch, token revocation endpoint, velocity circuit breaker and alerting.

How to make the final choice
For an agent that assists with ordinary retail purchases, prioritize mature checkout integration, authentication, fraud tooling and customer support. For delegated card purchases, prioritize mandate evidence, scoped network tokens, policy enforcement and rapid revocation. For frequent machine payments, prioritize latency, per-transaction economics, machine identity, automated limits and settlement options, then verify that your accounting and dispute processes can handle the volume.
Use protocol names as implementation clues, not as procurement shortcuts. Visa’s and Mastercard’s announced frameworks, Stripe’s token work, x402 activity and early MPP volumes show a rapidly forming ecosystem. They do not establish a universal winner, current country coverage, legal compliance for your design or a guaranteed approval rate. The right processor is the one that can prove, for your exact flow, that customer intent remains verifiable, delegated spend remains bounded and your business retains operational control after the payment succeeds.
