The right way to pay for an online game in Latin America depends on your country and the specific game store’s checkout—not on a single region-wide payment menu. Compare the methods actually offered, the final amount, processing time, subscription support and account-region fit before you pay. You may not need a credit card: local bank transfers, digital wallets, cash vouchers and platform gift cards are options in some country-and-store combinations.
How to choose a payment method that works
- Start at the game’s checkout. Select your country and see which methods the store offers. A payment method supported by one platform or provider is not automatically accepted by another. Mercado Pago’s country-specific payment-method documentation illustrates how options differ across its markets.
- Compare the amount you will actually pay. Check the checkout total and any disclosed bank, wallet or currency-conversion charges. The available evidence does not establish a universal cheapest method or best exchange rate.
- Check when the purchase will be usable. A transfer or wallet flow may complete differently from a voucher that has to be paid at a location and then confirmed. If you need the game or top-up immediately, check the merchant’s stated timing.
- For a subscription, verify recurrence. A method that works for a one-time purchase may not work for recurring payments. Mercado Pago marks some methods as unavailable for subscriptions in its availability documentation.
- Confirm account and code region. Before buying a platform gift card, check that the listing and code are compatible with your account’s country or region.
- Read the dispute terms for that payment route. Refunds and disputes can vary by merchant, provider and method; do not assume card procedures apply to a cash voucher, transfer or wallet payment.
Which local payment methods are available?
There is no single Latin American payment menu. Mercado Pago’s documentation lists different methods by country, including bank transfers, cards and cash or payment-slip options. These are examples of methods documented by that provider, not a guarantee that a particular game store accepts them.

Card brands and prepaid-card availability also vary by country. Check the exact options shown by the store rather than assuming a method listed for another country—or even by the same payment provider—will work for your purchase. Mercado Pago’s payment-method list includes a subscription note for some methods.

Market-level figures offer context, but they do not predict what a particular checkout will accept. PagSeguro’s E-commerce and Payment Landscape in Latin America, published in 2023 using 2023 gaming-payment data and projections through 2026, reported that credit cards accounted for 47% of gaming e-commerce transactions across the report’s Top Six Markets: 28% were internationally enabled cards and 19% domestic-only cards. The report also said cash was the preferred method for one-sixth of gamers, while bank transfers and Pix together represented 17% of gaming payments.

The same report’s country figures show why local preferences matter: in Brazil, Pix represented 27% of gaming sales and credit cards 58%; in Colombia, PSE represented 33% of gaming payments and cards 39%. These are the report’s figures for its stated period and scope, not current shares for every platform or advice that one method will work for an individual player. PagSeguro’s report also compared foreign-site card authorization rates as low as 30% across the region with rates reaching 80% through local processor partnerships; those are report-stated comparisons, not a guarantee for any transaction.
Can you pay for games without a credit card?
Sometimes. Depending on your country and the game store, you may see a bank transfer, digital wallet, cash payment slip or platform gift card instead. For example, Nintendo documents digital eShop gift-card purchases in Brazil using Pix or Boleto Bancário, and in Mexico using OXXO. These are Nintendo-specific options; they should not be generalized to other stores or countries.

Nintendo eShop gift cards in Brazil
- Pix: Scan the checkout QR code with a bank app or wallet. Nintendo advises verifying the amount and recipient before confirming.
- Boleto Bancário: Pay at an authorized location within seven days. Nintendo says to allow two to three days for payment processing, so this option may not be suitable when you need funds immediately.
Nintendo eShop gift cards in Mexico
- OXXO: Present the voucher at an authorized location within five days.
Nintendo says the digital code is emailed after processing and that sales of these gift cards are final. Follow the country-specific instructions and check that the card fits your account before purchasing. Nintendo also warns users not to share their Nintendo Account credentials. Nintendo’s instructions for eShop digital gift cards in Latin America describe the supported payment flows.

Yes. A provider’s country list is not a universal acceptance list for game stores, and even a regional rollout can be limited to named countries or services. On September 28, 2026, EBANX announced that NetEase Games Club would offer local methods and cards in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile and Peru. The announcement names Pix and Mercado Pago in Brazil, SPEI in Mexico and PagoEfectivo in Peru. Treat this as a platform-specific announcement: availability can depend on the game, country and rollout status. EBANX’s announcement provides its stated rollout details.

What to check if a payment fails or you need to dispute it
If a card payment is declined, check whether the store requires an internationally enabled card and whether your billing country matches the account or checkout region. The PagSeguro report’s authorization-rate comparison suggests local processing can matter, but it does not identify the cause of any individual decline or guarantee that switching methods will succeed.
For a card charge contested with a bank, Mercado Pago describes a chargeback process in which the provider notifies the seller, requests evidence and holds the disputed amount while the case is resolved. That explanation concerns Mercado Pago’s process; it does not establish the dispute procedure or protections for other providers, merchants or payment methods.
