Choose payment infrastructure by mapping how a buyer’s money should move from checkout to each seller—not by comparing checkout features alone. An industrial marketplace may need seller onboarding and verification, payment allocation across one or more sellers, controlled payouts, and records that reconcile to orders, refunds, and disputes. Start with your transaction flow and country footprint, then ask providers to confirm in writing that they support your exact business model.
What does an industrial marketplace need beyond a checkout gateway?
A conventional checkout flow takes a buyer’s payment. A marketplace flow may also need to identify and verify third-party sellers, allocate each payment among sellers and the platform, track balances, and pay sellers. A provider that supports online payments does not automatically support every part of that arrangement.
Three relevant candidates document marketplace-specific capabilities: Stripe Connect, Adyen for Platforms, and Worldpay for Marketplaces. Their product pages establish that they offer functions for marketplaces; they do not establish that a particular industrial business will be approved, supported in every country, or offered suitable contract terms.
How should you map the transaction before comparing providers?
Write down the buyer, platform, and seller roles for a normal order, then trace the money and information through checkout, fulfillment, payout, and any later adjustment. Include edge cases that are common in your business, such as an order containing products from multiple sellers, a partial shipment, a return, or a dispute.

- With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.

- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
- Parties and roles: Which entity operates the platform, which seller supplies each item, and which party should appear to the buyer as the seller or payee?
- Order composition: Can one checkout include goods from multiple sellers? If so, how should the payment be divided?
- Platform revenue: Is the platform fee a fixed amount, percentage, or another agreed charge, and when should it be allocated?
- Exceptions: How should cancellations, full and partial refunds, chargebacks, and other adjustments affect seller and platform balances?
- Payout conditions: Should payment go to a seller immediately, on a schedule, after shipment or delivery, or after a defined return or dispute window?
The allocation pattern matters. Stripe documents direct charges, destination charges, and splits among multiple sellers through Connect. Adyen documents allocation of payments, captures, and refunds among user balance accounts and the platform’s liable account; its documentation warns that if split instructions are missing, the whole transaction amount and fees may be booked to that liable account. Review the specific integration pattern with the provider before implementation: these are payment-flow options, not legal or accounting advice. See Stripe Connect and Adyen’s documentation on processing marketplace payments.
Can the provider onboard your sellers and operate in your markets?
Make a list of the platform’s and sellers’ legal entity types and countries. Then check what information sellers must supply, who must complete identity checks, and whether the onboarding process is practical for the sellers you expect to recruit. Ask the provider to confirm eligibility for your industrial category and transaction profile; general marketplace capabilities do not constitute underwriting approval for your business.
- Stripe Connect describes identity verification, KYC, and sanctions checks as part of its service. Ask which seller entities and countries are eligible for your platform and what verification requirements apply.
- Adyen for Platforms describes onboarding and verification of marketplace users and publishes supported regions in its marketplace documentation. Confirm the exact region and seller requirements for your planned setup.
- Worldpay for Marketplaces documents a party-creation flow that can request identity verification. Ask what account and seller requirements apply to the specific countries and entities involved.
For each candidate, request written answers on seller-country coverage, beneficial-owner requirements, industrial-category acceptance, expected transaction profile, and any restrictions that could prevent a seller from being onboarded. Provider documentation: Stripe, Adyen, and Worldpay.

Do buyer payment methods and seller payouts cover your corridors?
Build a corridor list rather than relying on broad claims about global reach. For each buyer and seller market, record the payment currency, the currency in which the seller should receive funds, the buyer payment methods you need, and the seller payout instrument. Include cross-border transactions and any currency conversion the flow may require.
Stripe describes global payouts, Adyen lists supported regions for marketplaces, and Worldpay advertises broad currency acceptance and international payouts. Those descriptions do not establish that every combination of platform location, seller location, currency, payment method, and payout route is available to your business. Check current documentation and obtain written confirmation for each relevant corridor: Stripe Connect, Adyen for Platforms, and Worldpay for Marketplaces.
When should sellers be paid, and what controls do you need?
Define payout timing as an operational rule, not a vague preference. Decide whether payout follows a schedule or a fulfillment milestone, how returns or disputes affect it, and whether the platform needs balances, deductions, reserves, multiple recipients, or manual controls.

- Worldpay for Marketplaces describes automated weekly scheduled payouts. Ask whether that schedule fits your needs and what other payout timing or controls are available under your proposed setup.
Do not treat a marketplace balance or a delayed payout as escrow unless the provider and qualified counsel confirm that characterization. Product documentation describes capabilities, not necessarily the contractual or legal status of funds in your arrangement.
Who handles risk, refunds, disputes, and reconciliation?
Assign each operational responsibility before signing. Ask who reviews seller onboarding, makes fraud decisions, processes refunds and chargebacks, handles seller negative balances and failed payouts, and provides support when a payment or payout needs investigation. Clarify which party bears each loss and how that allocation appears in the contract.
Also check that the integration and records support your accounting process. Confirm the available transaction-level data, reporting exports, event notifications, and reconciliation records, including how they represent payment splits, fees, refunds, and adjustments.

How can you compare the real cost?
Request written proposals using the same business assumptions. The official product pages cited here do not establish comparable prices for a defined marketplace, so they do not support a universal “cheapest” choice.

Give each provider the same expected monthly volume, average and largest order value, seller count, card and non-card payment mix, domestic and cross-border shares, refund and dispute assumptions, and payout frequency. Ask for a total-cost breakdown covering applicable processing, platform, payout, currency-conversion, dispute, refund, minimum, and implementation charges. Have each proposal state which fees depend on volume, payment method, geography, or contract terms.
What should you get confirmed before choosing?
Send each finalist the same transaction-flow diagram, corridor list, and cost assumptions. Request written confirmation of these points before you commit:
- Eligibility of the platform and each seller type in the actual countries and industrial category.
- Which party is the merchant or payee for each proposed flow, and who is responsible for disputes, losses, and negative balances.
- How splits, fees, captures, refunds, partial refunds, chargebacks, and seller balances are handled.
- Supported buyer methods and currencies, seller payout instruments, payout timing, and any reserves or country restrictions.
- Available reporting and reconciliation records, integrations, event notifications, implementation requirements, and support escalation.
- Full fees for the same matched operating scenario supplied to every provider.
Choose only after the proposed transaction flow, seller eligibility, operating responsibilities, payout rules, and total costs all fit the way your marketplace actually works.
