Choose a party speaker by matching it to where it will be used, how far it must be carried, how long it needs to play, and what you need to connect. For a speaker that stays indoors, portability may matter less than inputs; for a yard or event, check splash protection, battery claims, transport features, and whether it accepts microphones or instruments. Wattage alone cannot tell you how well a speaker will cover a room or crowd.

Start with the setting and how you will move the speaker

Decide whether the speaker will mostly stay in one room, travel between rooms, or move outdoors and between venues. A stationary setup can prioritize connections and power access. Frequent carrying makes weight and handles more important; for longer moves, wheels and a telescopic handle can be useful.

For example, JBL lists wheels on its PartyBox 310, and wheels plus a telescopic handle on the PartyBox 520. The PartyBox 720 has a published net weight of 31 kg (68.3 lb), so consider how it will be transported before choosing it. These are product-specific details, not a general measure of sound quality or suitability.

Match battery claims to the length of your event

Compare the manufacturer’s stated playtime with your expected event length, and leave a margin rather than planning around the maximum. All figures below are JBL’s “up to” claims on official product pages accessed in 2026; actual runtime depends on use. JBL specifically notes that the PartyBox 310’s runtime varies with content and battery condition.

Check protection for the place you will use it

The cited JBL product pages list IPX4 for the PartyBox 110, 130, 520, and 720. Treat that as a splash-protection claim, not permission to submerge the speaker or leave it exposed to heavy rain. Check the manual for the exact model’s use and care instructions, and protect connections and power sources from moisture.

List every source and live input you need

For music playback, check the exact model page for the connections you use, such as Bluetooth, USB, or auxiliary input. If the event includes karaoke, announcements, an instrument, or a DJ source, confirm that the speaker has a suitable input and that it is compatible with your specific equipment.

  • Instruments: The PartyBox 110 and 130 pages list guitar inputs. Confirm the connection type your instrument or other gear requires.
  • DJ or other XLR equipment: The PartyBox 520 and 720 pages list two XLR inputs. JBL describes the PartyBox 520 inputs as supporting a microphone, guitar, or DJ console; that is the manufacturer’s claim for that model, not an independent compatibility test.

Count the sources that need to be connected at the same time. An input label does not guarantee compatibility with every microphone, instrument, mixer, or DJ console; check the equipment specifications and required cables.

Decide whether you need to pair speakers

If you want more than one speaker, verify how the exact models connect and whether they are compatible. The PartyBox 310 page lists compatible-speaker pairing, while the PartyBox 520 page lists Auracast multi-speaker connection. Do not assume that different models or product generations will pair together, or that every pairing method works wirelessly; check the manufacturer’s instructions for the speakers you plan to use.

Do not use wattage as a crowd-size guarantee

A wattage label by itself does not establish loudness, sound quality, or how many people a speaker can cover. JBL’s product specifications do not provide standardized maximum-output comparisons across these models or venue-coverage limits. For a large gathering or live sound, look for independent, comparable measurements or ask an event-audio professional to assess the space and setup rather than choosing by a claimed crowd size.

A practical shortlist before you buy

  1. Name the setting: indoor room, yard, or event venue; note likely weather exposure and access to power.
  2. Plan transport: decide whether you need a carry handle, wheels, or a telescopic handle, and account for the speaker’s weight.
  3. Estimate playtime: compare your event length with the manufacturer’s “up to” figure, allowing for real-world variation.
  4. Inventory connections: list playback sources and any microphones, instruments, or DJ equipment, then check the exact inputs and compatibility.
  5. Check expansion and protection: confirm the precise IP rating, operating instructions, and pairing method for the models under consideration.
  6. Assess coverage separately: for a large or live event, use independent measurements or get an event-audio assessment; specifications here do not guarantee audience coverage.
