Choose a network monitoring tool by first deciding what you need to notice: which devices are online, whether a router or switch is healthy, how much traffic it handles, or what changed when something went wrong. Then check that your equipment supports the monitoring method, that the monitoring service can reach it, and that you can maintain the service where it runs. There is no single best fit: device-alert apps, vendor dashboards, and self-hosted SNMP platforms answer different questions.

Start with the problem you want to detect

“Monitoring” can mean anything from a notification that a new device joined Wi-Fi to a history of interface utilization, device health, and configuration events. These signals are not interchangeable. A tool that reports devices appearing or disappearing may help you spot an unexpected connection, but that alone does not provide detailed router or switch metrics.

  • Device presence: Which devices are on the network, and did a new one appear?
  • Reachability: Is a device responding, or has it gone offline?
  • Hardware and interface metrics: What utilization or health information does a router or switch expose?
  • Events and history: What changed, when did connectivity degrade, and what alerts or records are retained?

Write down the specific signal you need before comparing products. A solution is useful only if it collects that signal from your actual devices and presents it with alerts or history suited to your purpose.

Compare the main approaches

Approach Best suited to What to verify
Device discovery and basic alerts Noticing devices appearing or changing online status Which parts of your network it observes, alert behavior, and current plan packaging
Vendor dashboard, API, or logs Getting health, client, traffic, or event visibility from equipment you already manage with a controller Whether your controller and installed software version expose the needed data and alerts
SNMP monitoring platform Polling supported routers and switches for exposed equipment metrics Exact model support, network reachability, secure SNMP configuration, and server requirements

For device discovery and online/offline alerts

Fing describes continuous device-status alerts and notifications when new devices appear. That is a vendor feature description, not an independent evaluation; check Fing’s network monitoring feature information and confirm current plan packaging before choosing it.

TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

Also check whether the service sees the whole network as you have configured it. A discovery view is only as useful as its coverage: do not assume that an alerting feature automatically observes every network segment, access point, or device in your setup. This approach is a reasonable starting point when presence and basic reachability are the main questions, but it should not be mistaken for detailed switch or router health monitoring.

For router and switch metrics, verify SNMP support first

SNMP lets a monitoring platform poll compatible network equipment for information the device makes available. It is a practical option only when the exact hardware supports the required SNMP mode and the monitoring host can reach it over the network. A product name or brand family is not enough to establish compatibility.

For UniFi equipment, Ubiquiti’s SNMP Monitoring in UniFi Network documentation describes third-party polling by tools such as Zabbix, PRTG, and Nagios. It requires compatible adopted devices and network access, describes SNMP v1/v2c and v3 configuration, and explicitly excludes USW Flex and Ultra switches. Check the model-specific requirements before expecting metrics from any device.

Security is part of the setup, not an optional afterthought. Ubiquiti recommends changing the default community string and documents authenticated SNMPv3, which can optionally encrypt traffic. Select a configuration appropriate to your environment and restrict access so only the intended monitoring host can poll equipment.

If a room has weak signal or is blocked by walls, simply place an extra compatible router there and press the Mesh button on the router to extend your network quickly.

Account for the monitoring server

A self-hosted platform brings setup and upkeep responsibilities. Zabbix’s version 7.0 router and switch monitoring quickstart demonstrates an SNMP workflow and lists an installed Zabbix server and frontend as prerequisites. That means choosing Zabbix is not just choosing a dashboard: you need a suitable host, initial configuration, and someone prepared to maintain the service. An existing always-on computer may be suitable; the documentation does not make new hardware a requirement.

Zabbix publishes standardized templates for network devices, but template availability does not prove that every model exposes every desired metric. Verify device support and the fields collected for your specific use case.

If you already use a vendor controller, check it before adding another platform

A controller you already operate may provide enough visibility for a small network. Ubiquiti’s official API documentation describes aggregated internet health, device status, and network performance through Site Manager, while its Local Network API is tied to the installed Network version and includes device, client activity, usage, and traffic insight data. See Getting Started with the Official UniFi API for scope and version context.

These controller, API, and log features may cover what a single-vendor environment needs, but they are not established as a replacement for every third-party monitoring requirement. Check whether the available data, alert delivery, and retention meet your particular need before relying on them.

Use these checks to make the choice

  1. Define the signal: Choose presence, reachability, utilization, device health, event history, or a specific combination.
  2. List your equipment: Record exact router, switch, controller, and other relevant models, plus software versions where applicable.
  3. Confirm compatibility: Look for explicit model and protocol support. For SNMP, confirm the mode and metrics exposed; for vendor features, check controller and Network version requirements.
  4. Check network path and security: Ensure the monitoring host can reach the devices, and configure credentials and access securely.
  5. Decide what useful alerting and history mean: Specify which conditions should notify you, where alerts should go, and how much event or metric history you need.
  6. Choose where it runs: Prefer a controller you already use when it provides the required visibility; choose self-hosting only if you have a suitable always-on host and are willing to maintain the server and frontend.
  7. Validate before depending on it: Confirm that the expected devices appear and that the tool actually receives the signals you wanted, rather than assuming that installation or a template guarantees useful coverage.

Match the tool to the job

  • For new-device and online/offline notifications, evaluate a discovery-oriented service and verify its coverage and current plan features.
  • For metrics from a supported router or switch, confirm SNMP compatibility and secure access, then decide whether you can host and maintain a monitoring server.
  • For a network already managed through a vendor controller, inspect its dashboard, API, and logs before adding another system; add a third-party tool if the needed metrics, alerts, or history are missing.
