Choose a PC monitor by matching it to your main tasks, your computer’s video capabilities, and your desk. Then compare size and resolution, panel characteristics, refresh rate, HDR, ports, and adjustability. The right choice depends on the combination: a feature is useful only when the display, PC, connection, and your workspace can all support it.
Start with your work, computer, and desk
First decide what the monitor will do most often: office work, gaming, content creation, or a mix. These uses put different weight on sharpness, color, contrast, motion, and connectivity. LG’s general monitor buying guide also recommends considering your hardware and available space alongside display features.
Check the PC or laptop specifications before comparing monitors. Identify the video outputs and the resolution and refresh rate they can drive, including through any dock or adapter you plan to use. For a laptop, note whether you need the monitor to charge it. Measure the desk and consider your usual viewing distance; a screen that fits the specification sheet may still be awkward in your setup.

Resolution is the number of pixels in the image; screen size is the physical diagonal. More pixels can show finer detail, but how sharp a display looks also depends on pixel density, viewing distance, and operating-system scaling. A larger screen is not automatically sharper, and a higher resolution is not automatically more comfortable to use.

Compare the size and resolution together with your desk depth and preferred text size. If possible, check how the operating system scales text and interface elements at the intended resolution. There is no single size-to-resolution pairing that suits every viewer or workspace.
Match panel characteristics to what you notice
Panel labels describe broad tendencies, not guaranteed performance on an individual monitor. LG summarizes common differences among panel types in its buying guide:

For creative work, look for model-specific information about color coverage and accuracy rather than relying on the panel name. For games or other fast-moving images, check independent measurements of response and motion behavior where available. Similar-sounding claims can be based on different methods: VESA cautions that manufacturers may use “different metrics or measurement methods” for similar display claims in its display performance explainer.
Set a refresh-rate target your PC can deliver
Refresh rate, measured in hertz (Hz), is how often the display can update its image each second. LG describes 60 Hz as common for everyday productivity and higher rates as an option for smoother motion, while noting that the computer must handle the selected rate. Its monitor buying guide is general advice, not a guarantee about any particular computer.

Check the supported modes for both the monitor and the PC at the resolution you intend to use. Also account for the port, cable, dock, or adapter in between: the combination must support the target mode. A monitor’s maximum refresh rate does not mean your PC can render games at that rate, or that every connection path can output it.
Evaluate HDR by its certification and setup needs
Do not treat a generic “HDR” label as proof of a particular picture quality. VESA’s DisplayHDR program defines performance categories that address luminance, color gamut, bit depth, and rise time. Its FAQ recommends looking at the certification tier, and explains that HDR and resolution are independent: a higher pixel count does not itself establish HDR performance. HDR also depends on the computer, connection, operating-system configuration, and content. VESA lists DisplayPort 1.2 and later, USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt 3, and HDMI 2.0a or 2.1 among interfaces that can be used for HDR; that does not mean every device or connection combination supports every HDR mode. Microsoft’s Windows HDR settings guidance notes that HDR can reduce laptop battery life. If HDR is unavailable or behaves unexpectedly, Microsoft recommends checking display settings, supported connections, and graphics drivers in its HDR and wide color troubleshooting guidance.

Microsoft’s documentation also describes a configuration in which Windows HDR is not supported on an external display when the desktop is duplicated; extending the desktop may be necessary. Behavior can depend on Windows and hardware versions, so check current Windows guidance for your setup rather than assuming that mirroring will work.

Check ports, video modes, and laptop charging
List the ports on both the PC and monitor and confirm that a direct connection or your planned dock and adapter supports the required resolution, refresh rate, and HDR mode. A connector’s shape alone does not prove that it supports the video mode you need.
USB-C can combine video, USB data, and power when the devices support the required features. DisplayPort describes USB-C connectivity and an interface-level capability of up to 100 W in its DisplayPort over USB-C overview. That is not a promise that every laptop and monitor pair supplies or accepts 100 W. Verify the monitor’s charging output, the laptop’s charging needs, and USB-C video support in both devices’ specifications before relying on one cable.
Check adjustment, mounting, and fit
Look at how the stand adjusts: height, tilt, and pivot can affect whether the display fits your posture and desk. If you intend to use a separate arm or mount, confirm that the monitor supports the mounting pattern you need and that the mount can handle its weight. Measure the footprint and available desk space before settling on a size.
Compare candidate monitors with a checklist
Once you have a shortlist, compare the same practical details for each candidate instead of ranking by one headline specification.
- Use: office work, gaming, content creation, or mixed use.
- Image: size, resolution, viewing distance, scaling, panel characteristics, color, contrast, and motion.
- Performance: supported resolution and refresh-rate combinations on the monitor and your complete PC connection path.
- HDR: certification tier, PC and interface support, Windows configuration, and intended content.
- Connectivity: required video inputs, USB-C video support, laptop charging wattage, hub needs, and any adapters.
- Installation: stand adjustments, VESA mounting compatibility if needed, monitor weight, and desk fit.
- Ownership: compare current local prices and warranty terms directly; they vary by model, seller, and region.
Do not assume that the model with the most impressive single specification is best overall. A display’s features matter only if they fit your tasks and work with your computer and setup.
