If you need a minimalist phone with maps and voice calls, the Mudita Kompakt is the clearest candidate in the available manufacturer information: its North American product page lists offline maps, cellular calls, VoLTE, and Wi-Fi calling. But it also states that emergency calls cannot be made while Offline+ mode is active. Check the exact regional model and carrier support, and learn how that mode affects calling before relying on the phone.
What to check before choosing a minimalist phone
Judge each phone against the functions you actually need, not just its feature labels. Four checks matter: whether it has usable maps (including offline maps if needed), whether your carrier supports voice and VoLTE on the exact model, what happens to emergency calling in restrictive modes, and whether the remaining functions are enough for your routine.
- Maps: Look for a maps or navigation app, and verify whether it works without a data connection. GPS hardware by itself does not provide maps.
- Calls: Confirm that the exact regional model is supported for voice and VoLTE by your carrier. A phone’s advertised network bands or calling features do not establish compatibility with every operator.
- Emergency access: Check regional SOS availability, any configuration requirements, and whether privacy or offline modes disable calling.
- Coverage: Ask your operator about coverage at home and along your usual routes. Emergency connectivity depends on more than the handset.
Which minimalist phones meet the maps-and-calls requirement?

| Mudita Kompakt | North American product page lists offline maps. | Lists cellular voice calls, VoLTE, and Wi-Fi calling; confirm compatibility with your exact model and carrier. | Mudita says emergency calls cannot be made in Offline+ mode. |
| Punkt MP02 New Generation | Does not support conventional maps or navigation, despite having a GPS module. | Punkt publishes network bands and carrier guidance; support status varies by carrier. | GPS is described as serving emergency-location requirements in many countries, not as a navigation feature. |
| Light Phone III | Not established by the cited support information. | Not established by the cited support information. | Emergency SOS is optional and region-dependent, according to its support page. |
Mudita Kompakt: the most direct fit for offline maps
Mudita’s North American product page lists offline maps alongside cellular voice calls, VoLTE, and Wi-Fi calling. That makes the Kompakt the most directly documented option here for someone who wants maps and calls without a conventional smartphone feature set. These are manufacturer-listed features, not an independent performance assessment. The page advises customers seeking a version for a destination outside its standard region to contact Mudita support: Mudita Kompakt product page.

Punkt MP02: GPS is not the same as maps
The MP02 is a poor match if native maps or navigation are non-negotiable. Punkt says: “The MP02 includes a GPS module, but it does not support navigation or location-based services in the conventional sense (e.g. maps or tracking apps).” Its support article explains that the GPS module is intended for emergency-location requirements in many countries, not for showing routes or places: Punkt: Does the MP02 have GPS or navigation?
Carrier compatibility is a separate question. Punkt’s compatibility guidance tells customers to check with their network operator. The published table for MP02 reports AT&T as supported and verified, T-Mobile as supported but not verified, and Verizon as not supported. Those statuses are model- and time-sensitive; confirm them with both Punkt and your operator before buying. See Punkt’s US carrier compatibility guidance.

Light Phone III: check whether SOS is available where you are
Light Phone’s support page describes Emergency SOS as an optional feature that depends on regional availability. That means you should not assume SOS is included or available in your location. The information establishes availability limits, not independently verified emergency-call performance: Light Phone III Emergency SOS support.

What emergency access can—and cannot—be assumed to mean
A phone’s emergency or SOS label is not a guarantee that a call will connect in every situation. The FCC discusses 911 capabilities in terms that include appropriate call routing, location information, and callback information. Whether a real call can be completed may also depend on network availability, operator provisioning, local coverage, the device’s configuration, and where you are. The FCC material is regulatory context, not a test of any of these phones: FCC document on 911 obligations and capabilities.

- Privacy & Security Focused: Built with security in mind from the start, the MP02 is designed to help safeguard your information without requiring you to share more personal data than necessary. Enjoy peace of mind with a phone experience that prioritizes discretion and control.
- Carrier Compatibility & Connection: AT&T is supported (coverage verified, VoLTE supported). T-Mobile is supported, but VoLTE is not supported. Verizon is not supported. Many US carriers use VoLTE for voice calls - if VoLTE isn’t supported on your carrier, call performance may be limited even with signal. The MP02 supports 4G LTE across key bands (2G: 850/900/1800/1900 3G: WCDMA 1/2/4/5/6/8/19 4G: FDD LTE 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/12/17/19/20).
- Simple By Design: A minimalist interface keeps everyday actions straightforward. Call and text buttons provide quick access, while a streamlined menu helps you stay focused on essentials. Note: messaging is SMS-first (MMS group chats aren’t supported), helping to keep communication simple.
- Built for Everyday: Designed for comfortable one-handed use with a clean, minimalist silhouette. Reinforced glass fiber construction supports daily use, while the lightweight shape makes it easy to carry anywhere.
Do not test a handset by placing a live emergency call. Ask your carrier and the manufacturer how the phone handles emergency calls in your region and in any offline or privacy mode.

A practical verification checklist
- Identify the exact phone and regional version. Do not rely on a similarly named model or a listing intended for another market.
- Ask your carrier about voice and VoLTE. Give it the exact model or SKU and ask whether it is supported and properly provisioned on your plan.
- Check maps in the conditions you expect to use them. Confirm that maps are actually available, whether they work offline, and what needs a data connection.
- Review modes that restrict connectivity. Find out what Offline+, privacy, or airplane-like modes disable, and how to exit them.
- Confirm emergency and SOS availability locally. Ask whether the feature is supported in your location and what the manufacturer and carrier require for it to work.
- Check coverage for your normal routes. A compatible device cannot overcome a lack of network coverage.
