Pick your main smart-home app first, then buy the hub that app’s platform supports for the kind of Matter devices you own. For Thread devices, that hub must also act as a Thread border router, or you need a separate border router on the same network. No single hub is the best choice for every mixed-brand home. The right one depends on the platform you will use every day and on the device types you need to control.
Can one Matter hub work with devices from different brands?
Yes, within limits. Matter is designed so devices from different manufacturers can be added to the same platform. Two things decide whether that works in your home:
- The platform must support the device category. Google says Matter-certified apps and platforms add support for device types on different schedules. A Matter badge on the box is not a guarantee that your platform exposes every feature of that device today.
- The hub must support the device’s transport. Matter devices connect over Wi-Fi/Ethernet or over Thread. Thread devices need a Thread border router to reach the rest of your network.
Matter also does not make a hub a universal bridge. The Matter guidance from Google, SmartThings and Amazon covers Matter devices only. It does not establish that these hubs also control older Zigbee, Z-Wave or proprietary devices. If you own those, confirm support for them separately.
Controller vs. Thread border router
These are two different jobs, and some devices do both.
#1 Best Overall
- [Multi-Protocol Hub with Matter Bridge] The M3 is a versatile hub supporting Aqara Zigbee and Thread devices. It integrates third-party devices into the Aqara Home app. Supports advanced Matter bridge functionality, enabling Aqara-exclusive scenes and signals to sync with Matter ecosystems such as Home Assistant for seamless integration. The addition of a USB-C port allows for mini-UPS and power bank connections, delivering unparalleled stability. (2A USB power adapter is not included. ) . Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M3 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.
- [Privacy-Focused with Encrypted Storage, Easy Setup and Versatile Placement] The M3 prioritizes privacy by excluding microphone or camera components. It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.
- Matter controller: manages Matter devices inside a platform after they are onboarded. SmartThings defines it as the hub responsible for controlling a Matter device after onboarding. Google says a Matter-enabled hub is needed to add Matter devices, control them locally, and control them remotely when you are away.
- Thread border router: gives Thread devices a path onto your home network. Amazon states that Thread-based devices require a border router for commissioning, and SmartThings says Thread devices need a controller that includes one.
If you only plan to buy Wi-Fi Matter devices, a controller without Thread is enough. If you plan to buy Thread sensors, locks or bulbs, choose a hub with border-router capability. The alternative is a separate border router, if your platform allows one.
Step 1: Choose the platform your household will actually use
Choose the app people will open every day, and treat the hub as part of that platform. Then use Multi-Admin to reach the other platforms if you need them (covered below). Starting from a hub and working backwards tends to leave you with an app nobody likes.
Step 2: Check the hub model against the platform’s current list
Model and generation matter. Support lists change, so check the vendor’s page on the day you buy.

Google Home
Google’s “Prepare your smart home for Matter” support page splits hubs into two groups:
| Group | Devices listed by Google |
|---|---|
| Matter over Wi-Fi and Thread | Google TV Streamer (4K), Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro (Wi-Fi 6E), Google Home Speaker (2026) |
| Matter over Wi-Fi only | Nest Hub (1st gen), Nest Audio, Nest Mini (among others on the page) |
If you want one device that covers both transports in Google Home, the Google TV Streamer (4K) is one listed option. It is a Google Home choice, not a hub for every platform. A Wi-Fi-only Nest speaker will do for Wi-Fi Matter devices, but it will not help with Thread.
Samsung SmartThings
- The SmartThings 2018 Hub and the Aeotec Smart Home Hub are listed as Matter controllers. SmartThings states a firmware requirement of 45.9 or higher for the listed Samsung controllers.
- The SmartThings 2015 Hub supports Matter over Wi-Fi/LAN but has no Thread router. A third-party Thread border router on the same Wi-Fi/LAN network can fill that gap.
- SmartThings also lists Android and iOS app and software requirements for commissioning, so check your phone as well as the hub.
Reusing an old hub can save money. Confirm the model and firmware before you count on it.

Amazon Alexa
Amazon’s developer documentation says compatible Echo devices can connect Matter devices locally to Alexa, over both Wi-Fi and Thread. Amazon writes: “With Matter, smart home devices can connect directly to Alexa without a separate hub or smart home add-on.” That applies to a supported Echo acting as the Matter administrator. Thread devices still need a border router. The documentation reviewed here is aimed at developers and does not give a full consumer model list, so check Amazon’s current device pages for your exact Echo or eero.

Multi-Admin lets one Matter device be controlled from more than one Matter-certified platform. Google describes it as simultaneous control from several smart-home apps, including Apple Home and Amazon Alexa. SmartThings documents sharing an onboarded device to another platform while keeping it in SmartThings. Before you rely on it:

- Powered by SmartThings: Connect, monitor, and automate your home through the SmartThings app. Build a reliable, unified smart home using Samsung's proven ecosystem
- Matter + Zigbee Smart Home Hub: Supports the newest Matter standard plus Zigbee for lighting, sensors, plugs, switches, thermostats, and more - thousands of compatible devices. PLEASE NOTE: Z-Wave not supported
- Easy Setup with Wi-Fi or Ethernet: Get started in minutes using Wi-Fi or a wired Ethernet connection for apartments, houses, and expanding smart home systems - Z-Wave not supported
- Automations That Work for You: Create custom routines for security, lighting, comfort, and energy savings. Many local automations continue working even if your internet goes offline
- Wide Device Compatibility: Connect compatible smart devices from Aeotec and many other brands to build a unified system for lighting, voice control, energy management, and climate settings
- Install and configure the other platform’s app. SmartThings requires this before sharing.
- Check that each platform supports the device’s category.
- Do not assume every feature appears identically in every app. Multi-Admin shares the device, not a guarantee of equal feature support.
Step 4: Check your network, especially IPv6 for Google Home
Google says IPv6 must be enabled on your home network for Matter to work properly on its platform. Some devices may partly work over IPv4, but Google says they need IPv6 to communicate with all Matter-certified apps and devices. Its support page warns: “Without IPv6 enabled on your home wireless network, the setup process may initially appear to succeed at times. However, control and other functionalities eventually fail due to the lack of IPv6 support that’s required for the Matter technology to work properly.”
Setup that seems fine can still fail later, so check this before blaming the hub. Look at your router’s IPv6 setting, or ask your internet provider. Buy a new router only if your current one cannot support IPv6. Also keep the hub on the same home network as the devices it manages.
Step 5: Account for older, non-Matter devices
List any Zigbee, Z-Wave or proprietary devices you own. If the hub you are considering is meant to run them, confirm that from the vendor’s documentation for that specific model. Do not infer it from the Matter label.
Quick Recap
Quick decision checklist
- Name your main platform and app.
- List your devices, noting which use Wi-Fi/Ethernet and which use Thread.
- If any use Thread, pick a hub listed with Thread border-router capability, or add a separate border router where the platform allows.
- Check the exact model, generation, firmware and phone requirements on the vendor’s current page.
- Confirm the platform supports each device category you need.
- Confirm IPv6 on your network if you use Google Home.
- If you want a second platform, check the device and both apps support Multi-Admin.
- Verify any older Zigbee or Z-Wave devices separately.
