Choose a low-cost U.S. phone plan by checking service where you actually use your phone, then comparing the full cost, data limits, device compatibility, and number-transfer terms. Coverage maps can narrow the options, but they cannot promise indoor reception or dependable calls at a particular address.
Start with the places you need service
List the places where your personal number must work: home, workplace, regular commute, and destinations you visit often. A provider’s broad coverage is only a starting point; local signal, building materials, and network congestion can affect the experience.
Use the FCC National Broadband Map as an initial check. Its mobile coverage information describes expected connectivity outdoors or in a moving vehicle, not indoor coverage. It is not a guarantee that voice calls will succeed inside a particular building.
Recommended Free Tools
- Check the map for your regular areas, not just your home ZIP code.
- When possible, try the network at home, work, and along your usual route before relying on it for an important personal number.
- If submitting a coverage challenge to the FCC, note that qualifying speed tests must use mobile data rather than Wi-Fi and take place outdoors or in a vehicle. Those tests concern mobile broadband coverage, not a guarantee of voice-call success.
Do not assume a low-cost plan performs exactly like the network it uses. Connect by T-Mobile says its service may be slower than T-Mobile during congestion. Comparative measured performance for the plans below is not established, and local results vary.

Compare the total cost and the data rules
A monthly price is not the whole cost. Compare the amount due upfront, the renewal price, taxes and fees, how long any introductory offer lasts, and the data allowance. Then check what happens when that allowance is used: data may stop, slow down, or incur an extra charge depending on the plan.
| Plan example | Published price and payment terms | Data and limit behavior | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Connect by T-Mobile | $15 plus tax for 5GB, $25 plus tax for 8GB, or $35 plus tax for 12GB; plans run for 30 days and may be renewed. | Unlimited talk and text. On-network data ends at the allowance until the next billing date unless you add data or change plans. | Connect says service may be slower than T-Mobile during congestion. Details are on the Connect plan page. |
| Visible | The official page lists a $25 monthly base plan and higher-tier plans. Selected higher tiers may have discounts for eligible new customers who meet offer conditions. | not stated (the researched offer page did not establish these plan details). | The researched page described an offer ending October 29, 2026, with port-in and continued-service conditions. Offers change; confirm current terms on the Visible offers page. |
| Mint Mobile | The displayed introductory 5GB offer was $45 upfront for three months ($15/month equivalent), only for those first three months. Listed 12-month renewal equivalents: $15/month for 6GB, $20/month for 17GB, $25/month for 23GB, and $30/month for Unlimited. Taxes and fees are extra. | Plan-specific service after the data allowance is used: not stated. | The lower renewal equivalents require a 12-month term; the introductory price is not the renewal price. Check current terms on the Mint plans page. |
These are examples of published terms, not a ranking by reliability. For a fair comparison, calculate your first-year outlay from the amount charged and the applicable renewal terms—not just a monthly equivalent in an advertisement.

Check the cost that applies after an offer
For a promotional or introductory price, identify who qualifies, what action is required, how long the discount lasts, and what could end it. Visible’s researched offer, for example, required an eligible new customer to port a number by the stated deadline, use the required code, and maintain eligible service. Its cited offer ended October 29, 2026; check the live offer and terms rather than assuming it remains available.
Match the data allowance to your use
Estimate your regular mobile-data use, especially if you stream, use maps, or rely on your phone away from Wi-Fi. Connect’s listed plans include 5GB, 8GB, or 12GB, and its on-network data stops at the allowance until the next billing date unless you add data or change plans. “Unlimited talk and text” does not mean unlimited high-speed data.

Check your phone before choosing a provider
An unlocked phone may work with another provider, but unlocked status alone does not establish compatibility. Confirm the exact handset works with the plan’s network and supports the activation method you want, such as a physical SIM or eSIM.
- Check whether your phone is unlocked. The FCC explains that an unlocked phone may work with another provider, but compatibility still needs to be checked: FCC guidance on unlocking phones.
- Use the provider’s compatibility check before signing up. Connect and Mint both support bringing a phone you already own, subject to their requirements.
- Do not buy a replacement phone unless your current one cannot be used with the chosen plan; confirm compatibility before purchasing.
Keep your personal number when you switch
If you change providers and remain in the same geographic area, the FCC says you can keep your existing number through number porting. The FCC’s number-porting guidance covers transfers between wireline, IP, and wireless providers.

The FCC establishes the general portability principle, but transfer timing and provider-specific steps vary; confirm those details with the provider you choose.
