There is no single cheapest broker for every Indian investor. Compare the total cost of the trades and account you expect to use—including brokerage, demat account maintenance, sale-related DP charges, and statutory or exchange levies—rather than choosing by an advertised brokerage rate alone. Check the broker’s current official tariff and registration before opening an account.

What costs should you compare?

A broker’s headline brokerage is only one part of what you may pay. Separate recurring account costs, transaction charges, and optional service fees so you can compare providers on the same assumptions.

Brokerage for the trades you plan to make

Check the tariff for the exact transaction type you intend to use, such as equity delivery or intraday trading. A rate for one type of trade does not establish what another will cost. If you might use margin funding or another segment, include its charges only if it applies to your plan.

Demat account maintenance (AMC)

Demat AMC is a recurring account charge that can matter especially to investors who buy and hold. Ask whether you qualify for a Basic Services Demat Account (BSDA) tier and how the provider determines eligibility and holdings. Do not assume a published BSDA rate applies to every account.

DP charges when shares are sold

Depository participant (DP) charges can apply when shares are debited from a demat account for a sale. They are distinct from brokerage, so a zero-brokerage delivery offer does not necessarily make selling free. Check whether the tariff combines the depository fee with a broker fee, and whether it specifies an exemption or threshold.

Statutory, exchange, and optional charges

Official tariffs may also list statutory, exchange, or regulatory charges. These are not erased by a zero-brokerage offer. Depending on how you invest, also check fees for services such as margin funding, call-and-trade, pledging or unpledging securities, and payment methods.

  • To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.

How to compare brokers for your own investing pattern

Use the same realistic year of activity for each broker. A buy-and-hold investor who seldom sells may weigh AMC differently from an investor who sells frequently or trades intraday. There is no meaningful lowest-cost ranking without a defined transaction pattern, account eligibility, and current tariffs for the providers being compared.

  1. Write down your expected activity. Estimate the kinds and frequency of trades you expect, including sales, and note any optional services you will use.
  2. Check each provider’s official tariff. Record brokerage for each relevant transaction type, AMC for the account tier you may qualify for, DP charges on eligible sales, and applicable statutory or exchange charges.
  3. Calculate each provider’s annual total using the same assumptions. Keep recurring account fees separate from per-trade charges, and do not treat charges that depend on an order or account as a universal flat cost.
  4. Verify the terms before opening the account. Tariffs and eligibility can change. Confirm the current fee schedule and account documents directly with the provider rather than relying on an old comparison or an advertised rate alone.

Official tariff examples—not a cheapest-broker ranking

The following are examples from the providers’ public pricing pages, not a complete market survey or a calculation of what a particular investor will pay. Review the linked pages for current terms before relying on any figure.

Check service fit and verify the provider

Cost is not the only account-selection criterion. Consider whether the provider offers the platform features and support you need, but do not infer reliability or ease of use from a tariff page. Before opening an account, review its documentation and confirm that the intermediary is registered. SEBI advises investors to deal with SEBI-registered intermediaries and recognized market infrastructure institutions in its Investor Charter.
