Choose a living room set by measuring the usable space, planning how people will move through it, and checking the exact dimensions of every piece—not by relying on labels such as “standard” or “small.” Measure the delivery route too, then tape the furniture’s footprint on the floor to check the layout before you buy.
Start with the room and the way you use it
Measure the room’s length and width, then note the space that is actually available for seating. Doors, windows, fireplaces, built-ins, and existing furniture can make some wall or floor area impractical. Decide what the seating should face—a fireplace, a view, or another focal point—and leave clear routes between entrances and the places people need to reach.
Think about who will use the room and how. A compact household may prefer one sofa and open floor space; a larger household may need more seats, but adding pieces can make circulation difficult. Aim for a layout that supports both conversation and movement rather than filling every available area.

Compare configurations and typical dimensions
These ranges are from Wayfair’s sofa-dimensions guide, whose publication date is not stated. They are starting points, not specifications for every product. Use the dimensions listed for the exact model and configuration you are considering.

Wayfair describes standard sofa depth as 32–40 inches, with 35 inches common, and seat depth as 20–25 inches. A deep seat can take up more usable space and may feel different to sit in than a shallower one. Compare seat depth and seat height with the people who will use the furniture, as well as its overall dimensions. For a sectional, confirm the dimensions of the precise arrangement being sold; a range for sectionals cannot tell you whether a particular configuration fits.
Plan walkways and furniture clearances
Clearance recommendations are design guidance, not building standards. Costco and Wayfair use about 30 inches as a sofa-planning guideline for walking room. Homes & Gardens quotes LTA Interiors recommending at least 36 inches for main walkways and about 18 inches between furniture pieces for an easy flow. These are different rules of thumb: consider the route’s importance, who uses it, and what your room can accommodate.

For the sofa-to-coffee-table gap, Homes & Gardens cites a recommendation of about 18 inches. Treat that as a starting point and adjust to preserve comfortable reach and movement. Measure the clear space between the edges of the pieces—not just the distance between their centers.

Product length alone does not show how much floor area a living room set occupies. Check each piece’s width, overall depth, and height. For sofas, also check seat depth and seat height so the furniture suits both the room and its users. Include side tables, ottomans, and the coffee table in the layout; a set that fits without them may not fit comfortably with them.

Look at visual scale as well as floor area. A tall sofa placed in front of a window or beneath shelves may interfere with the room’s proportions or use of that space. A sectional’s chaise or return can project farther into the room than its main sofa section, so plan around its outermost edge.
Make sure the furniture can reach the room
A set that fits the living room may still be impossible to deliver through the home. Measure the route from the delivery entrance to the room, including doorways, hallways, stairs, and elevators. Check the seller’s delivery dimensions and any instructions or constraints for moving the specific item through that route.

Ask whether removable legs or modular construction affect delivery, and whether the item can be carried in the configuration you are buying. Do not assume that a piece will fit through a narrow opening just because its listed width is smaller than the opening: its depth, height, shape, and turning space along the route can matter too.
Test the layout before you commit
- Measure the room and access route. Record the usable floor area and the dimensions of doorways, halls, stairs, and elevators between the entrance and the room.
- Choose a placement and configuration. Mark the focal point, the direction seats should face, and the routes that need to remain open.
- Check the exact product specifications. Compare the listed overall dimensions and seat measurements for each piece and the exact sectional arrangement, if applicable.
- Draw the clearances into your plan. Use the circulation and sofa-to-table guidance above as flexible starting points, not guaranteed standards.
- Tape the footprint on the floor. Use painter’s or masking tape to mark the outer edges of the furniture and tables. Walk around the outline and check doors, windows, and access to other furniture.
- Confirm delivery details with the seller. Verify the delivery dimensions and route requirements for the exact item before placing the order.
Interior designer Gray Walker told Homes & Gardens, “I always start by taping out furniture dimensions on the floor for myself and for my clients.” The tape outline is a useful way to judge scale and movement in your own room, but it does not replace checking the product specifications and delivery route.
