A laptop with 4GB of RAM can run a Linux desktop, but the right choice depends on what you do with it—not just which distribution is called “lightweight.” Start with Linux Mint, Xubuntu, or Lubuntu, then try your preferred option on the actual laptop before installing. Mint explicitly recommends 4GB for comfortable use; Ubuntu’s default desktop lists 6GB for a comfortable experience and points lower-spec users toward lighter flavors such as Xubuntu and Lubuntu.
Which Linux distributions should you try first?
These are sensible candidates, not a speed ranking. The available official figures describe different things and do not compare performance under the same workload.
| Your priority | Try first | What the published information says | What to check on your laptop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Familiar desktop for general use | Linux Mint | Mint recommends 4GB of RAM for comfortable use and describes the system as designed for desktop and laptop computers. Its FAQ lists 20GB as a disk minimum and recommends 100GB. Linux Mint FAQ | Choose the Mint edition that suits you, check available disk space, and try your usual applications. |
| Ubuntu base with a lighter desktop | Xubuntu | Ubuntu recommends Xubuntu for lower-spec computers. Xubuntu’s 26.04 image listing states 1,024MiB to install from the image; that is an installation threshold, not a daily-use recommendation. Ubuntu flavors · Xubuntu 26.04 image listing | Check wireless and graphics support, then test responsiveness with your normal browser and office workload. |
| Prioritize a lighter Ubuntu flavor | Lubuntu | Ubuntu recommends Lubuntu for lower-spec computers. Lubuntu’s 26.04 image listing states 1,024MiB to install from the image; it does not establish how a full desktop will perform in your use. What 4GB of RAM means in everyday use
Four gigabytes makes a desktop Linux installation a realistic option, and Linux Mint specifically calls it a comfortable amount for its system requirements. That does not guarantee a particular laptop will feel fast: the processor, storage, graphics, drivers, and apps you run all affect the experience.
Light browsing, email, and documents place different demands on memory than many open browser tabs, video calls, large spreadsheets, or development tools. With 4GB, running several memory-heavy applications at once can matter more than the distribution’s name.

Do not mistake installer requirements for comfortable-use guidance. The 1,024MiB figures published for Xubuntu and Lubuntu 26.04 describe installing from their images. Likewise, Xfce’s representative-requirements page lists 512MiB for a Xubuntu desktop/live CD, but that is not a current recommendation for everyday work. Xfce 4.20 representative requirements
How to test a distribution before installing
A live session lets you check whether a candidate works with your laptop before committing to an installation. Xfce documentation describes booting a distribution from a live USB; confirm that the current image you choose supports this option and that your laptop can boot from USB.

- Check the laptop first. Identify its processor architecture, firmware and boot support, storage type and free space, Wi-Fi chipset, graphics, and whether its RAM can be upgraded. Without the exact model, compatibility or upgrade advice cannot be specified.
- Get a current image. Download the maintained release for the distribution and edition you want from its official site. Avoid installing an end-of-life release just because an old guide gives it a low memory threshold.
- Start a live session, if available. Use a USB installer and the laptop’s boot menu or firmware settings. Check the selected image’s size and your laptop’s boot support beforehand.
- Test the hardware you depend on. Try Wi-Fi, display resolution, audio, suspend and resume, touchpad, special keys, and any external devices you regularly use.
- Try your actual workload. Open the browser sites, office files, and other apps you expect to use. Notice whether the laptop remains responsive with your normal set of apps open.
- Back up important files before installing. Installation or partition changes can affect data on the laptop.
Compare storage needs and support dates
Storage figures are published in different contexts, so they are not a controlled comparison between distributions. Linux Mint’s FAQ lists 20GB as a minimum and recommends 100GB. Ubuntu’s 26.04 release notes list 25GB of free storage for a comfortable Ubuntu Desktop experience. Check the requirements for the exact edition and release you plan to install.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSupport periods also matter when choosing a version. Linux Mint says its LTS releases receive five years of support. Ubuntu says Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is supported through April 2031. Check the current policy for your chosen edition before installing. Make the final choice based on the laptop, not a label
If you want a straightforward general-purpose starting point, try Mint. If you prefer an Ubuntu-based option intended for lower-spec computers, compare Xubuntu and Lubuntu. Then choose the one whose interface and apps suit you and whose live session works with your hardware and routine. The published minimums do not show which will be fastest on your particular laptop, and there is no same-workload comparison here to establish a winner.
