Start with the platforms and tools you must run, then size the laptop for your actual workload. A laptop that can open an IDE may still feel constrained when you add emulators, containers, large projects, or frequent builds. Treat software requirements as compatibility floors, not guarantees of a smooth experience.
Start with the operating system and target platform
Before comparing processors or memory, confirm that the operating system and CPU architecture support the exact tool versions you plan to use. A fast machine is a poor choice if a required toolchain will not run on it.
- Apple-platform development: Choose a Mac compatible with the macOS version required by your intended Xcode release. Apple’s Xcode support table maps releases to supported macOS versions and changes over time. Apple says visionOS development requires a Mac with Apple silicon.
- Android development: Android Studio’s installation requirements currently say Windows- and Linux-based ARM laptops are not supported. Check the guide for the release you plan to install, since tool support can change.
- Windows development: Check the requirements for the Microsoft tools and workloads you need. Visual Studio’s 2026 system requirements give guidance for supported Windows configurations and installed features.
When shopping, verify the precise OS release and processor architecture rather than relying on a broad label such as “Windows laptop” or “Mac.”
Match memory to the workload, not a universal minimum
RAM needs depend on what runs at the same time: the IDE, browser, local services, containers, emulators, and other applications. Official figures are product- and workload-specific.

| Workload or tool | Published memory guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Android Studio alone | 8 GB minimum (Android Developers, 2026) | This is for the IDE, not a complete multitasking budget. |
| Android Studio plus emulator | 16 GB minimum; 32 GB recommended (Android Developers, 2026) | Choose more headroom if you run additional virtual devices or other memory-heavy apps. |
| Visual Studio professional solutions | 16 GB recommended for typical solutions; Microsoft says Visual Studio works best with 64 GB RAM (Microsoft, 2026) | The 64 GB figure is Microsoft’s “works best” guidance, not a requirement for every project. |
| JetBrains Rider 2026.2 | 8 GB total RAM (JetBrains, 2026) | This is the product’s stated hardware requirement, not a recommended whole-system allocation for a large project. |
| Full Android Open Source Project builds | At least 64 GB RAM (Android Open Source Project; current requirements page, publication year not stated) | This is a specialized, unusually large source-build workload. |
Android Developers estimates about 4 GB of memory for each simultaneously running Android Virtual Device (AVD), with the exact amount varying by system. If you regularly run several emulators, account for that demand alongside the IDE and your other applications.
Memory that can be upgraded later can preserve flexibility, but many thin laptops have fixed RAM. Check the exact configuration and upgrade options before buying; do not assume a model’s memory can be expanded.
Choose a CPU for builds and virtualization
For everyday coding, CPU choice is less about a single tier and more about compatibility, generation, core count, and the operations you perform. Compilation and virtual devices can make processor capability more important than it is for editing small scripts.
- Android Studio’s emulator configuration requires hardware virtualization support. Confirm that the laptop and its firmware expose the needed virtualization features.
- Microsoft recommends a quad-core-or-better processor for Visual Studio and says it works best with 16 CPU cores or more. These are Microsoft’s published recommendations, not independent laptop benchmarks.
- For web development, scripting, and lighter IDE work, prioritize a supported CPU and a balanced system rather than paying for cores you are unlikely to use.
The scale of full source builds illustrates why workload matters: the Android Open Source Project says a full Android build takes approximately 40 minutes on its 72-core, 64 GB machine, versus approximately six hours on a six-core, 64 GB machine. These are figures from the project’s requirements page, not results for consumer laptops; they show a workload-specific difference under the configurations described.

Allow enough SSD space for tools, emulators, and projects
Source code is only part of a development installation. IDEs, SDKs, virtual devices, build outputs, caches, and other applications all consume storage. An SSD is the practical choice: both Android Developers and Microsoft recommend one for their respective development setups.
- Android Studio recommends an SSD and at least 32 GB of free space for the IDE-plus-emulator configuration. Each additional AVD may require up to 6 GB more storage.
- Visual Studio installations typically use 20–50 GB, depending on the features installed; Microsoft recommends an SSD.
- Full AOSP builds require at least 400 GB of free disk space on 64-bit x86 Linux, according to the Android Open Source Project. This is not a general laptop requirement for ordinary app development.
Compare usable capacity after the operating system and your development tools are installed, not just the laptop’s advertised drive size. If your workload grows, an external drive can help with files or archives, but check whether your build and tool workflow can use it effectively.
Pick a display you can work on comfortably
Android Studio recommends a 1920×1080 display for its listed operating systems, and Microsoft says Visual Studio works best at 1920×1080 or higher. Resolution alone does not determine comfort: screen size, scaling, and how much room you need for code, panels, and documentation also matter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the laptop’s built-in screen feels cramped, an external monitor at 1920×1080 or higher is a reasonable workspace addition. The cited guidance establishes resolution references, not a comparison of monitor models.

Check GPU needs only when your tools require them
A discrete GPU is not automatically necessary for software development. Android Studio lists GPU requirements for emulator use on Windows and Linux, so check its current requirements for the specific OS and emulator configuration you plan to run. For ordinary IDE work that does not use GPU-dependent tools or workloads, the cited requirements do not establish a reason to buy a discrete GPU.

Web development, scripting, and lighter IDE work
Look for a supported OS and CPU, an SSD, and enough memory for your IDE, browser, communication tools, and local services together. JetBrains lists four CPU cores, 8 GB total RAM, and 10 GB disk space for Rider 2026.2; those are its product requirements, not a guarantee that a busy development setup will feel roomy.
Android application development
Decide whether you will use an emulator, how many AVDs may run concurrently, and whether you need other tools open at the same time. Android Developers recommends 32 GB RAM for Studio plus emulator use, an SSD with at least 32 GB free, and a 1920×1080 display. Multiple AVDs can add memory and storage demand.
Windows professional development
For typical professional Visual Studio solutions, Microsoft recommends 16 GB RAM and an SSD. Its 2026 guidance says Visual Studio works best with 64 GB RAM and 16 CPU cores or more; consider that higher guidance in light of your solution size and workload rather than treating it as a baseline for every Windows developer.

Apple-platform development
Select a Mac that supports the Xcode release and macOS version you need, using Apple’s current compatibility table before purchase. If your target is visionOS, Apple specifies a Mac with Apple silicon.
Full AOSP builds
Building the full Android platform is far more demanding than ordinary Android app development. The Android Open Source Project specifies at least 64 GB RAM and 400 GB free disk space on 64-bit x86 Linux. Its build-time comparison also shows how strongly this workload can depend on CPU resources.
Containers on a Mac
Docker Desktop’s Mac installation documentation lists at least 4 GB RAM as the software’s minimum. That figure covers Docker Desktop’s requirement only; the laptop also needs memory for macOS, the IDE, running containers, and other applications. Docker supports the current and two previous major macOS releases, so check the current Mac installation documentation against the system you intend to use.
Compare laptops with a focused checklist
- Confirm compatibility: Write down the required OS release, CPU architecture, and tool versions. Check the vendors’ current requirements before ruling a configuration in.
- List what runs together: Include IDEs, browsers, local services, containers, and the number of simultaneous emulators or virtual devices.
- Compare memory and upgradeability: Use the relevant workload guidance above, then verify whether the exact laptop configuration can be upgraded.
- Check CPU and virtualization: Review core count and platform support, and confirm hardware virtualization for emulator workloads.
- Calculate usable storage: Include the operating system, IDEs, SDKs, AVDs, caches, and the space your projects and builds need.
- Assess the screen and daily ergonomics: Check resolution and size, then consider portability, battery life, charging, and ports for your routine. Those practical factors vary by model and are not ranked by the published requirements cited here.
- Verify GPU requirements narrowly: Buy for the needs of your target tools and workloads, not the assumption that every developer needs a discrete GPU.
Published requirements are vendor guidance and can change with software releases. The minimums cited here are compatibility or product floors, not independent tests of laptop performance, battery life, thermals, keyboard quality, repairability, or value.
