Choose a judo gi (judogi) by matching its maker’s size chart to your measurements, checking its fabric and care details, and confirming the rules for the event where you plan to compete. An IJF-approved model is not automatically required at every tournament: ask the event organizer or governing body which approval and control rules apply.
Start with how you will use the gi
A judogi consists of a jacket (uwagi), trousers (zubon), and belt (obi). It is built to be gripped during throwing techniques, so durability and construction matter alongside comfort. The International Judo Federation (IJF) describes the uniform’s purpose in its overview of the judogi.
- Regular training: Prioritize a fit that allows movement, the maker’s stated care instructions, and construction suitable for repeated gripping and washing.
- A specific tournament: First check that event’s governing rules, required color, and any approval or equipment-control requirements. Do not assume requirements are identical between tournaments.
- Training and competition: Use the competition rules as a threshold, then compare fit, care, composition, and construction among models that meet it.
Choose the right size from the maker’s chart
Use the current size chart for the exact model you are considering. Height can be a useful starting point, but when the chart gives body or garment measurements, compare those as well. Check the jacket’s sleeve and body dimensions and the trousers; a size that fits one part does not guarantee that the rest will fit.
- Measure yourself using the method specified by the manufacturer, if provided.
- Compare your measurements with the model’s size chart and fit category, if one is listed.
- Check the care label and the manufacturer’s shrinkage guidance before choosing between sizes.
- If the chart or care guidance leaves you uncertain, ask the seller or manufacturer about that model rather than applying a shrinkage rule from another gi.
There is no single shrinkage percentage established for all judogi in the sources cited here. Follow the care instructions for the particular model; do not assume that every gi shrinks by the same amount or requires the same wash temperature.

Compare fabric and construction
The IJF’s March 2026 manufacturing regulation applies to the judogi products covered by that regulation; it is a manufacturing specification, not a universal recommendation for every practice context. It requires cotton or a cotton blend containing more than 70% cotton. The regulation explains that synthetic fibres can increase strength and reduce weight, while substantial chemical-fibre content reduces sweat absorption. Its guidance is not a substitute for checking a product’s actual composition.
For products covered by the regulation, jacket fabric weight is measured on a new, unused jacket after washing and drying: 650–750 g/m², with a ±5% tolerance. This figure describes the specification’s measurement conditions; it should not be treated as a general target for every training gi.

The regulation calls for sashiko weave in the upper jacket and lightweight, strong plain or twill weave combined with diamond-patterned sashiko in the lower jacket. It also specifies a tensile force of 2,200 N for the upper jacket’s double sashiko weave. These construction details help explain differences between judogi fabrics, but do not establish how a particular model will fit or feel.
The IJF regulation says the fabric “should not be too thick, too stiff or too slippery so that the opponent can grab it.” Read the March 2026 manufacturing regulation for its full scope and specifications. When comparing products, use the exact model’s composition, stated weight, weave or reinforcement details, and care guidance—not a brand-wide assumption.

Verify competition rules for your event
IJF competition control is intended to prevent uniform requirements from affecting fair play, including by checking sleeve length and fabric thickness. That rationale does not mean every local, national, or other tournament has the same approval requirement. Before buying a competition gi, ask the organizer or governing body whether the event requires an IJF label, another approval, a particular color, or specified equipment-control checks. Verify the exact model and current label status rather than relying on a general product description.
The IJF documents index lists IJF Sport and Organisation Rules Version dated 14 August 2026. Consult the current rules and the event’s control instructions for the measurements and procedures that apply. Do not rely on older measurements as universal current requirements.

For context, the IJF explains the purpose of pre-competition gi control in its article “Judogi Control Guarantees Fair Play”. If you are unsure whether an IJF-approved gi is mandatory for a US tournament or any other event, the answer depends on that event’s rules; the question alone does not establish a universal policy.

The IJF says a judogi should be washed after each training session. Its educational article frames this as a matter of cleanliness and respect for training partners and opponents. Follow the care instructions on the exact gi, since a universal wash temperature or shrinkage rate is not established here. See the IJF’s “Judogi: Much More Than Armour” for its care guidance.

Use this checklist to compare models
- Use: Does the gi suit regular practice, a named tournament, or both?
- Fit: Does the model’s size chart work for your measurements across jacket and trousers?
- Care: Are the washing and shrinkage instructions clear enough for your needs?
- Fabric: Are composition and fabric weight stated for this model?
- Construction: Are weave and reinforcement details explained rather than inferred from the brand?
- Competition: Have you confirmed the required approval, label status, color, and control rules with the event or governing body?
- Practicalities: Does the model’s price and availability work for you?
