Choose a horror game by the experience you want: unsettling atmosphere and uncertainty, pressure to survive, action against threats, or the vulnerability of having to hide and evade. Those styles can overlap, so focus on what you do when danger appears—not just the genre label on a store page.
Start with the kind of fear you want
Before comparing titles, decide what you want the game to make you do. Do you want to explore an unsettling story, manage danger while trying to stay alive, confront threats, or avoid them because fighting is limited? These preferences are more useful than treating subgenre labels as strict categories.

Psychological unease and story
Look for atmosphere, uncertainty, and a focus on the character’s inner life if you enjoy dread that builds through what you do not know. Silent Hill 2 is a useful example: it is commonly discussed as psychological horror, but it also has survival-horror elements. The labels can describe different parts of the same game.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSurvival pressure
Choose survival horror if you want danger and exploration to make staying alive part of the experience. Combat and puzzles can both be part of that style; the label does not promise one fixed formula. PlayStation’s horror-game guide includes Silent Hill 2 and Resident Evil 4 in its coverage of horror titles and subgenres.
#1 Best Overall
- Gorgeous Pixel Art & Animation: The game captures the essence of the Terrifier films with bright, cartoonish pixel art and fluid animations that vividly depict the gruesome action.
- Multiplayer Mayhem: Team up with up to 4 players for a chaotic local co-op experience. Work together—or against each other—in various game modes. Travel through multiple stages, each with different paths to explore and enemies to defeat. Prepare yourself for intense boss battles that will test your skills.
- Bloody Arsenal of Weapons: From chainsaws to cleavers, pick up a variety of weapons to turn your enemies into bloody pulp. Enjoy hilarious and gory attacks that make every fight as entertaining as it is brutal. The finishing moves are guaranteed to leave a gory delight impression! Relive the golden age of gaming with a glorious chiptune soundtrack that perfectly complements the retro aesthetic.
- Multiple Game Modes: With 6 different game modes, whether you're looking for a quick beat 'em up session or an extended challenge, there's a mode that fits your style.
- Languages: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (LATAM), and Spanish (Spain) in game text.
Action mixed with horror
If you want to confront threats rather than spend most of your time avoiding them, consider horror games with a more direct action component. Resident Evil 4 is a recognizable example to investigate. Check the listing for the specific edition you are considering: editions and platforms can differ, and a genre label alone does not establish the balance of combat and scares.
Vulnerability, evasion, and hiding
If limited ability to fight is part of the appeal, investigate Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Outlast. A University of Tampere thesis discusses Amnesia’s first-person perspective and lack of combat, and describes Outlast as a later example associated with this approach. Check the particular game’s description for its actual mechanics rather than assuming every title in this vein works the same way.

Compare candidates on three practical axes
When two games share a genre label, compare what creates the fear and how the game lets you respond. This is a practical way to choose, not a formal genre taxonomy or a rating of how scary a game is.
| Axis | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Source of fear | Does the game emphasize psychological uncertainty, the pressure of survival, or an immediate threat? |
| Player agency | Can you fight, evade, investigate, or combine those approaches? |
| Pacing and atmosphere | Would you prefer slower exploration and dread, more frequent confrontations, or a mix? |
For design context, Game Developer’s feature “Fight or Flight: The Neuroscience of Survival Horror” discusses design approaches in games including Amnesia, Dead Space, and Silent Hill. It is useful context for thinking about how a game creates tension, not a clinical guide or a measured ranking of fear.

- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
Check the specific edition before choosing
Once a game seems like a match, verify the current platform and edition listing in your region. Availability and edition details can change, so confirm them with the publisher or retailer before buying. If you are deciding between physical editions of Silent Hill 2, Resident Evil 4, or Amnesia: The Dark Descent, check that the edition is available for your platform and marketplace; a title’s fit for your preferred style does not guarantee a particular format is sold.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make the decision
- Pick Silent Hill 2 as a candidate if psychological unease and survival elements both appeal.
- Investigate Resident Evil 4 if you want horror that includes more direct confrontation.
- Look into Amnesia: The Dark Descent or Outlast if evasion and vulnerability sound more appealing than fighting.
Use those titles as preference matches to explore, not universal recommendations: pacing, mechanics, and editions matter, and no genre label can guarantee how frightening a game will feel to you.
