HomePod and HomePod mini qualify as home hubs in Apple’s Home app and become hubs automatically when set up. Apple TV can also qualify after you assign it to a room in the Home app. An iPad can control Home accessories, but it is not supported as a hub in Apple’s latest Home architecture.
Which devices qualify as an Apple Home hub?

Apple’s home hub setup guidance names HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV. Its iPad user guide gives Apple TV 4K (4th generation or later) as an example for remote control. These are feature-specific examples, not a complete compatibility list for every Apple TV model and every hub function.

How to make a device your home hub
HomePod or HomePod mini
Set up the speaker in the Home app. It becomes a home hub automatically; no separate hub switch is required.

Apple TV
- On Apple TV, open Settings > AirPlay and Apple Home > Room.
- Assign Apple TV to a room in the Home app. Apple says it becomes a hub once it has been added to a room.
To check which hub is active, open Home Settings > Home Hubs & Bridges. Apple says the active device appears at the top. You can turn off Automatic Selection there to choose a preferred hub manually.

Can an iPad be an Apple Home hub?
No. Apple states that an iPad is not supported as a home hub on the latest version of Apple Home, although it remains usable as a controller for accessories. Apple says support for the previous version of Apple Home ended on February 10, 2026; see Update Apple Home for its current guidance.
What hub is needed for Matter and Thread?
Apple says a home hub is required to add Matter accessories to the Home app. If the Matter accessory uses Thread, you also need Thread capability. Apple lists HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as Thread-enabled hub examples, and identifies a supported third-party Thread border router as another option for Thread connectivity.

These capabilities are not interchangeable: a Thread border router’s stated role does not show that it provides Apple Home functions such as remote access, notifications, or automations. Check compatibility for the specific accessory and feature you need. Apple’s setup article names Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet for Thread, while its iPad guide cites Apple TV 4K (4th generation or later) as a remote-control hub example. The reviewed Apple pages do not provide a complete model-by-model matrix for all hub features, so check Apple’s current instructions for your exact Apple TV model and use case.
What can prevent hub setup?
Apple’s troubleshooting guidance says the hub should be at home, powered on, connected to home Wi-Fi, and updated. The Apple Account needs iCloud Keychain and two-factor authentication enabled. Only the home owner can add a HomePod or Apple TV to Home as a hub. Availability of HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV varies by country or region.
