Choose a home charger by matching your SUV’s daily charging needs to its onboard AC charging limit and your home’s electrical capacity. For some drivers, a suitable existing outlet and Level 1 cordset are enough; for longer commutes, irregular schedules, or a large battery, a dedicated Level 2 charger may be more practical. Have a qualified electrician assess the installation before you buy equipment.

Decide whether Level 1 or Level 2 fits your routine

Level 1: use an existing suitable outlet

Level 1 charging uses the cordset supplied with the vehicle and a suitable outlet near the parking spot. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) says many owners can meet daily driving needs this way when a dedicated branch-circuit outlet is conveniently located. The AFDC notes that most EV drivers charge at home overnight using AC Level 1 or Level 2 equipment. AFDC: Charging Electric Vehicles at Home

Level 1 can be a sensible starting point if the vehicle is parked for many hours and your daily driving does not require more energy than the outlet can replenish. Confirm that the outlet and circuit are suitable with a qualified electrician rather than assuming any nearby receptacle is appropriate.

Level 2: consider faster 240 V charging

Level 2 equipment uses 240 V and can be preferable when you drive longer distances, have an irregular schedule, or need to replenish a large battery in less than the usual parked or overnight window. The AFDC describes the choice this way: “EV owners may install Level 2 (240 V) charging equipment in their homes for a faster charge, or opt for the Level 1 cordset provided with the vehicle as shown here.” AFDC: Charging Electric Vehicles at Home

  • Fast & Powerful: This EV charger charges 9× faster than a 120V outlet, delivering up to 45 mi/hr., dependent upon your vehicle. It features a J1772 connector for all non-Tesla EVs and requires a 20A or 80A circuit. For Tesla EVs, this will require an adapter.

A generic Level 2 home EV charger is not automatically the right purchase: match its output to the SUV’s onboard AC limit, and first confirm that the home can support the installation. Check connector compatibility, safety certification, and outdoor rating if it will be installed outside.

Match charger output to the SUV’s onboard limit

The vehicle’s onboard AC charging limit determines how quickly it can accept power from AC home equipment. A charger rated above that limit cannot make the SUV charge faster on AC; selecting equipment with more output than the vehicle can use may therefore add cost without improving charging speed. Check the exact model year and trim in the vehicle documentation, and compare its AC limit with the charger’s maximum output.

EVIQO Level 2 EV Charger J1772 40A NEMA 14-50 - 240V Wall Charging Station
  • WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
  • PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
  • CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
  • SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
  • GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.

Check the home before selecting equipment

Some homes may not have enough electrical capacity for Level 2 equipment. Ask a qualified electrician to assess the home’s capacity and the proposed installation route before settling on a charger or circuit plan. Do not assume that a particular wiring method, breaker size, or installation approach applies to every home; the electrician should determine what is appropriate for the property and equipment.

Installation may also involve permits and building-code requirements. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program advises checking the requirements that apply to the installation; rules and processes vary by locality. Compare the practical details before buying

  • Connector: Confirm that the charger connector is compatible with the SUV, or determine whether an appropriate adapter is supported.
  • Installation type: Compare plug-in and hardwired options only after the vehicle requirements, charger instructions, and electrician’s assessment are considered.
  • Safety certification: Choose safety-certified equipment; the DOE recommends certified equipment, including ENERGY STAR-certified products. AFDC: Charging Electric Vehicles at Home
  • Location and weather: For an outdoor installation, verify that the equipment is outdoor-rated. The DOE says outdoor charging is safe in rain when the equipment is rated for outdoor use. AFDC: Charging Electric Vehicles at Home
  • Cable reach and mounting: Check that the cable can reach the vehicle’s charge port from the proposed mounting location without creating an awkward or unsafe parking arrangement.
  • Smart features: Consider scheduling or energy-management features only if they solve a real need, such as coordinating charging with your routine or home energy system.
  • Total installed cost: Compare equipment and installation together. The installation route, home capacity, and local requirements affect the overall project; obtain a site-specific assessment rather than relying on a generic price.

Use a simple decision sequence

  1. Estimate your routine: Consider how much you drive on a typical day and how long the SUV is parked at home.
  2. Check the vehicle limit: Find the exact model-year and trim’s onboard AC charging limit and connector requirements.
  3. Assess the property: Ask a qualified electrician whether the existing outlet suits Level 1 use or whether the home can support a Level 2 installation.
  4. Confirm the installation details: Determine plug-in versus hardwired suitability, outdoor rating if relevant, cable reach, and any local permit or code requirements.
  5. Compare complete options: Weigh the charger’s usable output against the vehicle limit, safety certification, practical features, and equipment-plus-installation cost.

Local electrical rules, incentives, and utility programs vary. Check current requirements and eligibility with the relevant local authorities and utility; availability and terms depend on location and date.
