Choose a home battery by matching its stored energy (kWh) and power output (kW) to the appliances you want to run, the outage duration you want to cover, and your utility’s time-of-use (TOU) rates. Then confirm the backup configuration, solar compatibility, reserve settings, and installation requirements with a qualified local installer. There is no one capacity that fits every home.

How much battery storage do I need for my home?

Start with your household’s actual electricity use, then size for the loads and duration that matter. A monthly bill can help estimate average daily consumption, but it does not show which appliances run together or how demand changes with weather and season. Heating, air conditioning, water or well pumps, EV charging, and electric cooking can materially change the system you need.

  1. Review recent bills. Use several months, including high-use seasons, to estimate daily kWh and identify seasonal peaks. Treat the average as a starting point, not a sizing result.
  2. List outage priorities. Decide which lights, refrigeration, communications, medical equipment, heating or cooling, pumps, and other loads must remain available. Separate essential loads from those you can switch off.
  3. Estimate energy over the backup window. Add the expected kWh use of the chosen loads for the number of hours or days you want coverage. Include a margin for uncertain usage, and do not assume solar will recharge the battery every day.
  4. Check simultaneous and startup demand. Confirm that the system can deliver enough power when appliances operate together and when motors start. Energy capacity alone does not answer this question.
  5. Have the design checked on site. An installer should verify the panel and gateway arrangement, supported loads, solar equipment, and local installation requirements before you settle on a size.

For national context—not as a household sizing target—the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s 2023 median annual household electricity use was 10,500 kWh, as cited in Tesla’s 2025 home-battery sizing article. The same article cites a 2022 U.S. average electricity interruption of 5.5 hours. Outages differ widely by location and event, so neither national figure predicts your home’s needs.

What can a home battery run during a power outage?

That depends on two separate limits: how much energy is stored and how much power the battery can supply at once. A battery may have enough kWh for a long runtime but still be unable to start or run several high-demand appliances simultaneously.

  • Capacity, measured in kWh, describes stored energy and helps estimate how long selected loads may run.
  • Power, measured in kW, describes the load the system can supply at a moment. Check continuous output and, where relevant, peak output and motor-start capability.

As a current product example, Tesla lists Powerwall 3 at 13.5 kWh capacity and 11.5 kW continuous backup power. These are manufacturer specifications, not an independent comparison or a recommendation for a particular home. Tesla lists a Powerwall 3 Expansion unit as adding 13.5 kWh of capacity; confirm supported configurations and site design with the installer. See Tesla’s current Powerwall information.

Should you choose partial-home or whole-home backup?

Partial-home backup

A partial-home design backs up selected critical circuits and leaves some loads—often high-demand appliances—off the backed-up panel. It can focus battery energy on essentials, but you need to know which circuits are included and what happens when an excluded appliance is needed.

  • Multi Ways to Charge. One battery of 6144Wh can be fully recharged in 2 hours. Faster than any other 6kWh solar generator. Users can choose among electric vehicle piles, solar, wall outlets or outdoor generators for charging.
  • Uninterrupted Life. Online UPS with 0-ms transfer time, offering 24/7 protection for sensitive electrical devices against power disturbances or grid failure. All fans are off for the first half hour of outputting 2000W, giving you absolute silence for tranquility in everyday life.

Whole-home backup

Whole-home backup is intended to support the home’s broader electrical demand, but the label does not guarantee that every appliance can run at once. The battery’s power limits, home loads, panel layout, backup gateway or transfer equipment, utility requirements, and site conditions all affect the design.

Ask the installer to identify the backed-up circuits, explain any load limits or load-management equipment, and show how the system behaves during an outage. Tesla’s backup-load guidance also emphasizes configuration and installer-led design.

Can a home battery save money on time-of-use rates?

Potentially. Where the utility and system support it, a battery can charge during lower-priced periods and discharge during higher-priced periods. Whether that saves money depends on the actual tariff, the household’s consumption timing, system settings, and any applicable utility rules—not simply on battery capacity.

  1. Get the current rate schedule from your utility, including peak and off-peak hours, seasonal changes, and any demand charges that apply.
  2. Compare those periods with when your home uses electricity. A tariff is useful for shifting only if there is a meaningful price difference and the battery can cover the relevant loads.
  3. Ask whether the system can charge from the grid, export energy, or participate in utility programs at your address. Availability and rules vary by utility.
  4. Set a backup reserve that reflects the outage protection you want. Energy held in reserve is not available for routine rate shifting.
  5. Request an estimate based on your tariff and consumption profile, with assumptions stated. Do not treat a general savings claim as a guaranteed result.

Tesla’s Savings Mode guide describes time-based charging and discharging, while noting that utility support affects available behavior. Its Backup Reserve guidance explains the tradeoff between retaining energy for outages and using it for savings operation.

How does solar affect backup and rate shifting?

Solar can recharge a battery during an outage only when the system is designed to operate in that mode and sunlight is available. Night, clouds, storms, season, and household demand all affect how much energy solar can contribute. For an outage plan, size around the loads and stored energy you can count on; treat recharging as a possible benefit rather than guaranteed daily supply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you already have solar, verify compatibility with the existing inverter and panels, and ask whether the system will operate as expected both on and off the grid. If you are adding solar and storage together, have the installer design them as one system rather than assuming any battery will work with any solar setup. Tesla describes solar integration in its Powerwall product information.

What to compare in installer proposals

Compare proposals on matching technical and practical details, not on battery capacity alone. Ask each installer to specify:

  • Usable energy capacity in kWh, and continuous and peak power in kW.
  • Motor-start capability and any load-management limits.
  • Which circuits are backed up and whether the design is partial-home or whole-home.
  • Compatibility with existing or proposed solar equipment and inverters.
  • Expansion options and the supported system configuration.
  • Backup transition behavior, controls, reserve settings, and TOU optimization features.
  • Warranty, installation scope, permits, utility interconnection steps, and itemized installed price.
  • Confirmation that the proposed equipment and operating modes are eligible under your local utility’s current rules.

Installed price, payback, incentives, export compensation, grid-charging permission, and utility eligibility cannot be generalized nationally. Check current local utility terms and request a written, itemized proposal based on your home and tariff. Final sizing and configuration should be confirmed by a qualified installer familiar with local permitting and interconnection requirements.
