A 120Hz gaming monitor can make motion look smoother, but the right choice depends on what your PC or console can output, the games you play, and whether you value resolution, contrast, or speed most. There is no single best monitor for every setup: compare each model’s supported modes and independent image-quality testing before buying.

What 120Hz changes—and what it cannot

A 120Hz display can refresh its image up to 120 times per second. That higher ceiling can make motion feel smoother than on a lower-refresh display, but the game and connected system must provide frames at a rate that can use it. RTINGS explains the benefits of high-refresh displays for smoothness and motion handling, while noting that the system’s output matters too: RTINGS’ refresh-rate guide.

A monitor’s maximum refresh rate is a capability, not a promise that every game will run at 120 frames per second. Performance depends on the game, hardware, settings, and—in the case of consoles—the console’s supported output modes. Console refresh rates are limited by the console itself; Dell’s guide, for example, describes 4K/120 as a console-oriented target rather than a mode available in every setup: Dell’s gaming monitor guide.

Match resolution and refresh rate to your games

Resolution and refresh rate are best considered together. Higher resolution emphasizes image detail; higher refresh can improve the impression of smooth motion. The balance that makes sense depends on the screen size, the frame rate your system can sustain, and what you play.

Priority A sensible direction What to check
Competitive games Consider a lower resolution with a high refresh rate if your system can sustain the frame rates you want. Supported resolution and refresh modes, motion performance, and the connection path.
Cinematic single-player games Consider prioritizing resolution and image quality; a 120Hz ceiling may still suit a setup that does not reach 120 frames per second in every game. Contrast, brightness, HDR evidence, and performance at your preferred resolution.
Console gaming Check the console’s supported output modes before choosing between 4K/120 and other combinations. HDMI input capabilities, the console’s output, cable, and the game’s available modes.
Work and gaming Balance gaming performance with screen size, resolution, ergonomics, and ports for other devices. Stand adjustment, VESA mounting, input selection, and the display modes available on each input.

Dell’s guide illustrates why one specification does not define a universal winner: it contrasts a 4K/120 console use case with an esports-oriented 1080p display listed at 500Hz. Those are examples of different priorities, not evidence that either is the right choice for every buyer.

Check the entire connection path

A monitor may support a high refresh rate without showing the desired mode in your setup. Confirm the exact monitor model’s supported resolution and refresh rate for the input you plan to use, then check the connected PC graphics device or console, cable, and display settings. A connector label by itself does not establish that every mode will work through the full chain.

If the refresh rate is not appearing correctly, LG’s support guidance recommends checking PC display settings and ensuring the cable is DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.0 or higher: LG monitor support. Those cable recommendations do not replace checking the monitor’s specifications for your particular input and target mode.

Judge motion and response-time claims carefully

Refresh rate and response time describe different aspects of motion performance. Compare response-time figures only when you know what was measured and under what conditions. A manufacturer’s lowest millisecond figure is a specification, not a guarantee of the monitor’s real-world behavior across transitions or settings. Intel’s gaming-monitor guide recommends weighing the refresh rate and response time you want: Intel’s gaming monitor guide.

Evaluate HDR, panel type, and ergonomics at model level

HDR needs more than a badge

Intel’s HDR gaming monitor guide says: “The easiest way to determine if a monitor is capable of true HDR output is to look for the VESA* DisplayHDR logo.” Treat certification as a useful capability signal, not a complete measure of picture quality. For a specific model, also look for independent measurements of brightness and contrast and information about its local dimming or OLED behavior.

Compare the exact panel and physical fit

LCD and OLED models can differ in contrast, brightness behavior, motion characteristics, and price, so do not assume a panel category is automatically best for you. Check the model’s size, stand adjustments, VESA mounting support, and ports against your desk and setup. Manufacturer specifications can identify features; independent testing is needed to establish how well a particular display performs.

How to assess a current 120Hz example

MSI lists the MAG 272QP QD-OLED X50 as a 26.5-inch monitor with 120Hz console support over HDMI 2.1, VRR, and ALLM, as well as VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 and ClearMR 21000 certifications: MSI’s MAG 272QP QD-OLED X50 specifications. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results; they do not establish regional availability or how its price compares with alternatives. Use the listed features as a starting point, then verify the input modes and seek independent reviews of the exact model.

A practical pre-purchase checklist

  • Identify whether the display will connect to a PC, console, or both.
  • Check the output modes your device supports and the frame rates your games can sustain at your chosen resolution.
  • Choose a resolution and refresh-rate balance that fits your games and screen size.
  • Verify the monitor’s supported modes for the exact input, plus the device, cable, and settings needed to use them.
  • Compare response-time measurements only when their method and conditions are clear.
  • Assess HDR using both certification and model-specific image-quality evidence.
  • Check panel behavior, ports, stand adjustment, and mounting against your requirements.
  • Consult current independent testing before treating any model as a best-in-class recommendation.

For smoother motion, especially for gaming or video, you may want to consider monitors with higher refresh rates such as 120Hz or above. This guidance appears in LG Experience’s monitor buying guide; whether a higher rate benefits your setup still depends on the device and content.
