Start by writing down three games you must be able to play. The right handheld is the one that supports those exact games, fits your total budget, and is practical to carry for the trips you actually take—not necessarily the most powerful or popular model.
Start with the games you want to play
Before comparing screens or specifications, list three must-play games and check which platforms support them. A game being available on PC does not guarantee that it will run well on every PC handheld, and Nintendo exclusives make Nintendo Switch 2 a different choice from a device built around a PC game library.
- If your priority is Nintendo games and a console-style handheld experience, consider Switch 2 and check Nintendo’s current product and compatibility information.
- If most of your games are in Steam, consider Steam Deck or another PC handheld, then check each game against Valve’s Steam Deck Verified information.
- If your games are spread across PC storefronts, confirm that the specific device supports the services you use and that your key titles work as expected. The label “PC handheld” alone does not settle compatibility or setup requirements.
Check the exact games, not just the platform category. Compatibility can be title-specific, and a game may have different controls, performance, or setup requirements on a handheld.
Choose a platform family that fits your library
Nintendo Switch 2
Switch 2 is the clearest fit when Nintendo’s exclusive library is the deciding factor. It also offers a hybrid console experience, but its games and storefront are distinct from a Steam library. TechRadar’s 2026 guide lists a 7.9-inch LCD, 535 g with Joy-Con attached, 256 GB of storage, and a 2–5 hour battery range. That battery range is the guide’s reported figure, not a controlled comparison with other devices. TechRadar separately relays Nintendo’s claimed 2–6.5 hour range; treat that as the manufacturer claim, not an independent measurement. Steam Deck OLED
Steam Deck OLED is a natural candidate if the games you want are in Steam and are suitable for Deck. TechRadar’s 2026 guide lists a 7.4-inch OLED display, 640 g weight, 512 GB and 1 TB storage configurations, and a 2–8 hour battery range. The guide notes that demanding games can reduce runtime; that is editorial reporting, not a promise about how long every game will last on your device. Valve’s technical information and Verified resource are the appropriate places to check current specifications and game status.
Windows and other PC handhelds
ROG Xbox Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, and MSI Claw are among the handheld-PC products AMD identifies in its device overview. These models can suit readers whose game services and preferences align with a Windows handheld, but operating system, storefront support, controls, specifications, compatibility, and support differ by model and configuration. Check the exact product and regional version before choosing; AMD’s handheld overview and Lenovo’s Legion Go 2 product page provide manufacturer references. Neither portfolio listings nor product pages establish a universal performance ranking.

Cloud and remote-play devices
A streaming device such as PlayStation Portal is relevant if your main goal is remote play from an existing PlayStation and your network connection can support it. It is streaming-only and depends on internet access, so it is not a like-for-like alternative to a handheld that runs games locally. TechRadar discusses it in its handheld guide.

Compare the trade-offs that affect your decision
The figures below are the values reported by TechRadar’s 2026 guide, not results from a controlled test under identical settings. They help frame portability and endurance, but do not establish a winner for every player or game.

There is no established, consistent set of current prices across these models and regions here, so a dated price should not be treated as a current or global recommendation. Check the price in your local market for the exact configuration you want, then add the costs required to make it usable for your library and travel.

- Games: Include the games you plan to buy, not only titles you already own. Check whether your existing library carries over to the platform you choose.
- Storage: Compare built-in capacity with the space your games need. Before budgeting for an expansion card or drive, verify that the model supports it and check its limits.
- Protection: Add a carrying case only after choosing the device, and confirm the case is designed for that exact model and configuration.
- Charging: Consider whether you will need an additional charger or power bank. A power bank is useful only if its output is suitable for the device.
Match the handheld to your travel routine
Think about how long you will play between charging opportunities, rather than relying on a single battery number. The cited ranges vary by device and reflect TechRadar’s guide, not a common test; intensive games can shorten runtime. For long sessions away from outlets, plan for breaks or compatible charging instead of assuming the upper end of a published range.

- Short trips or frequent access to power: A smaller battery margin may matter less if you can recharge regularly.
- Long journeys with limited outlets: Prioritize realistic endurance for your specific games and decide whether carrying a suitable power bank is acceptable.
- Limited bag space: Compare the device’s physical size and weight, including attached controls and the case you intend to carry. The available figures here establish weights and screen sizes only for Switch 2 and Steam Deck OLED, not every dimension.
- Unreliable or absent internet: Check whether your chosen games can be played offline and complete any required downloads, updates, or sign-ins before leaving. Do not assume all games or services work offline.
A case can protect a device in transit, but fit is model-specific. Check its dimensions and cutouts against the exact handheld. Similarly, do not choose a power bank based on capacity alone: confirm that its charging output suits your device.
Make the choice conditionally
- Choose Switch 2 if its exclusive games and hybrid console experience matter more than access to a Steam library.
- Consider Steam Deck OLED if your must-play games are in Steam and their Deck compatibility meets your expectations.
- Consider a Windows or other PC handheld if the PC services you rely on and that specific model’s compatibility and setup fit your needs. Verify the exact configuration rather than generalizing from another device in the same family.
- Consider a streaming device only if remote play from a console you already own is the actual need and your internet connection is dependable.
Before purchasing, revisit the official product and compatibility pages for your region: availability, configurations, game support, and software can change. The right decision follows from your three must-play games, a realistic full-cost budget, and the amount of weight and charging responsibility you are willing to carry.
