Choose a golf watch by matching its on-course distances, map detail, golf-mode battery life, and optional features to the way you play. A long course-map list or a manufacturer’s feature sheet does not prove better GPS accuracy: the reviewed Garmin documentation describes what its watches display, but gives no measured positional error or head-to-head accuracy results.
Start with the numbers you need during a round
For many golfers, the practical baseline is distance to the green, plus useful information about hazards and layups. Garmin’s Approach S50 manual describes a hole map with distances to the front, middle, and back of the green, along with hazard and layup information. The watch calculates those green distances; it does not report the actual pin position, which can change. Garmin Approach S50 owner’s manual
That distinction matters when choosing how to use the displayed yardage. Front, middle, and back distances help with general club selection, but they are not a live measurement to the day’s pin location. The S50 manual also describes touch targeting on the course map, which can help you inspect a point on the hole.

Look for independent tests that explain their setup and conditions before accepting claims that one golf watch is more accurate than another. Garmin’s S70 manual describes satellite location and course selection, while its S50 manual documents golf distances and map functions. Those materials establish what the devices are designed to show, not a measured accuracy range or comparative result. Garmin Approach S70 owner’s manual
#1 Best Overall
- New round watch design with a high-resolution sunlight-readable display
- Battery life: up to 30 hours in GPS Mode
- More than 42,000 courses preloaded from around the world
- Keep score right on the watch and upload directly to the Garmin Golf app (when paired with a compatible smartphone) to participate in weekly leaderboards
- Automatically keep track of your score and how far you hit with each club with compatible Approach CT10 club tracking sensors (sold separately)
In the absence of comparable independent measurements, do not treat a longer feature list or a larger map database as proof of more accurate positioning. The official material reviewed for these examples does not establish a GPS positional-error figure or a cross-brand accuracy ranking.
Check the courses you actually play
Garmin advertises more than 43,000 preloaded full-color CourseView maps for the Approach S70. That count signals the database’s advertised scale, but it does not independently verify that a particular local course is included, mapped correctly, or updated to reflect recent course changes. - Pair with optional Approach CT1 or CT10 club trackers (sold separately) for shot-tracking capabilities, so you have a clearer picture of which parts of your game to focus on
- Easily keep score as you play, and upload to the Garmin Golf smartphone app for advanced stat tracking and handicap calculation
- Leave your phone in the cart and get smart notifications sent to your wrist — including emails, texts and alerts when paired with your iPhone or Android smartphone
Before buying, check the maker’s current course-coverage information for the courses you play most often. Also consider whether you can view the details you need on the watch: the S50 manual describes course and hole views, hazard and layup distances, and touch targeting. The cited Garmin pages do not provide an independent audit of map accuracy.
Compare battery life in golf mode
Smartwatch runtime and GPS runtime are different ratings. Compare the satellite-mode figure for time on the course, and keep the model size attached to the number when comparing watches. Garmin’s manuals give these maximum ratings for the examples below; they are manufacturer-stated figures, not independent measurements. Garmin cautions that actual runtime varies with settings and enabled features. S50 manual S70 manual

| Model | Smartwatch mode | All-satellite-systems mode |
|---|---|---|
| Approach S50 | Up to 10 days | Up to 15 hours |
| Approach S70, 42 mm | Up to 10 days | Up to 15 hours |
| Approach S70, 47 mm | Up to 16 days | Up to 20 hours |
Garmin notes that settings and enabled functions affect actual runtime. On the listed AMOLED Approach models, Always On display is off during general use by default; using display features can affect power consumption. Treat these figures as ratings rather than a guarantee of how long your particular watch will last between charges.
Separate useful golf functions from premium extras
Prioritize functions you will use on the course: green yardages, hole maps, hazards, layups, scoring, and shot distance. Then decide whether the added features justify their cost or complexity for your game.

- PlaysLike distance: Garmin describes the S50 as adding PlaysLike distance, health and wellness features, and activity profiles over the S44’s essentials. Garmin also promotes enhanced PlaysLike features on the S70. Treat these as additional guidance, not a substitute for understanding the actual yardage.
- Virtual caddie: The S70 offers virtual-caddie suggestions. Consider whether you want recommendations as well as distances.
- Green contours: Garmin says access to S70 green-contour data requires an active Garmin Golf membership. Check current membership terms before buying on the strength of this feature.
- Club tracking: Garmin says club tracking requires compatible accessories sold separately. Include the accessory requirement in your decision rather than assuming the watch alone supplies club-by-club tracking.
- Health, music, and general smartwatch functions: These may matter if you plan to wear the watch beyond golf, but compare them separately from the on-course functions you need.
Garmin’s January 21, 2025 announcement described the S44 and S50 as smartwatches for golfers. That is promotional positioning, not independent evidence of performance. Garmin’s January 21, 2025 announcement
Use this checklist before choosing
- Identify your on-course essentials. Decide whether front, middle, and back green distances are enough, or whether you also want hazard and layup views, scoring, or shot tracking.
- Verify local map coverage. Check the courses you actually play; do not assume an advertised database count confirms local completeness or current map details.
- Look for measured accuracy evidence. Prefer independent comparisons with disclosed testing conditions. If none is available, treat accuracy as unproven rather than inferring it from specifications.
- Compare GPS-mode battery ratings. Use the satellite or golf-mode figure, not just smartwatch-mode days, and check the exact case size.
- Assess fit and readability. A larger case may offer a larger display, but it may not suit every wrist. Try to judge how comfortably you can read and operate the screen during play.
- Check dependencies. Confirm whether the features you want require a membership, phone connection, or separately purchased compatible accessory.
