Choose the jeweller whose specific piece you can verify, whose written quote clearly shows the full cost, and whose design and after-sales terms suit your occasion. In India, check the hallmark and HUID on the item itself; do not rely on a brand name or a low making charge alone.
How to compare gold jewellery brands
Compare two or three jewellers using the same priorities: verifiable purity, a like-for-like total price, a design you can inspect, and written exchange and service terms. No source here establishes a universally best brand, so choose based on the particular piece and policies available to you.
- Quality verification: the item’s hallmark and HUID.
- Price transparency: an itemized quote and invoice showing the total.
- Design and service fit: suitable design, available size, chance to see or try it, and convenient service access.
- After-sales terms: clear return, exchange, buyback, repair, and resizing policies where offered.
Check the hallmark and HUID in India
Hallmarking is an official determination and record of precious-metal content. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) says the post-HUID hallmark comprises the BIS mark, the purity in caratage or fineness, and a six-character alphanumeric HUID. Ask to inspect the marks on each eligible piece, then use the BIS Care app’s Verify HUID feature to check the item’s identifier. A retailer’s brand reputation is not a substitute for checking the individual piece.

The grade tells you the gold’s fineness; it does not, by itself, determine which design or grade is right for your occasion. BIS says consumers may have an item or sample tested for a charge at a BIS-recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centre. It also describes compensation where hallmarked jewellery is found below its marked purity, based on the shortfall for the article’s weight and the testing charges. These hallmarking and HUID details apply to India; buyers elsewhere should check their own country’s assay and consumer-protection rules.
Compare the complete, itemized price
Ask each jeweller for a written, itemized quote and compare the same or closely comparable design, purity, and net gold weight. The World Gold Council’s overview of India’s gold jewellery business identifies transparent pricing, bills, and buyback policies as consumer priorities, but offers no quantified survey result for brand choice. A lower making charge alone does not show that the final amount is lower or that the piece is better value.

Keep the comparison to like-for-like items. If one quote bundles stones, uses a different gold weight, or applies a different purity, the totals may not be comparable until those differences are clear.
Read exchange, buyback, and after-sales terms
Ask the jeweller to explain its policy in writing before paying. In particular, find out how gold and stones are valued, which charges are excluded or deducted, whether the original invoice is required, whether other brands are accepted, and whether custom-made or altered pieces have restrictions. Check the return window and condition rules separately from exchange or buyback: they are not necessarily the same policy.

Use this checklist before you buy
- Choose two or three locally available jewellers and select the same or closely comparable design and purity for comparison.
- Inspect the BIS mark, purity grade, and HUID on each eligible item; verify the HUID in the BIS Care app.
- Get a written quote showing net gold weight, gold rate, stone details and charges where applicable, making charges, taxes, and total.
- Read the return, exchange, and buyback terms, including deductions, invoice requirements, brand restrictions, and custom or altered-item exclusions.
- Check whether you can see or try the piece and where repairs or other services are available under written terms.
- Keep the invoice and the policy terms that apply to your purchase.
