Choose a gaming monitor by matching it to your device, the games you play, and the frame rates your system can actually deliver. Then check resolution, refresh rate, motion handling, variable refresh rate (VRR), ports, and HDR performance at the exact settings you plan to use. A larger number or premium badge is not automatically an upgrade worth paying for.

Start with your device, games, and constraints

Before comparing monitors, write down whether you play on a PC or console, which games matter most, your budget, your viewing distance, and how much desk or room space you have. Those choices determine which specifications you can use.

On PC, consider the frame rates your graphics card can sustain in your actual games at the resolution and graphics settings you want. A high-resolution monitor asks the PC to render more detail; if your system cannot maintain the frame rates you want, that extra resolution may be a poor trade for games where responsiveness matters. For competitive shooters, a lower resolution can be a deliberate choice to prioritize frame rate. See RTINGS’ gaming monitor buying guide.

On console, identify the exact console model and the output modes supported by the games you play. Do not assume that a high-refresh monitor will make a console output at its maximum refresh rate in every game or resolution. Check the console’s capabilities and the monitor’s compatibility for the intended signal.

Choose resolution and screen size together

Higher resolution can show more image detail, but it also increases the rendering workload on a PC. The useful balance depends on your graphics hardware, games, viewing distance, available space, and budget; there is no one size-and-resolution pairing that is best for every player.

  • If your priority is competitive performance and your PC has limited graphics capacity, consider whether a lower resolution would let you sustain the frame rates you want.
  • If you value fine image detail, check whether your PC can run your games at the target resolution without sacrificing performance you care about.
  • Consider viewing distance and screen size together: a resolution upgrade matters most when you can see and appreciate the additional detail from where you sit.

Do not pay for a resolution in isolation. The relevant question is whether your device can drive it in your games and whether you will notice the benefit at your viewing distance.

Set a refresh-rate target your system can use

Refresh rate is how often the display can update its image. It does not cause a PC or console to render more frames: the source device, game, output port, and monitor input all constrain the signal. A high refresh rate is useful when your device can deliver compatible frame rates and the connection can carry the desired mode.

Samsung 27" Odyssey G5 (G51F) Series QHD (1440P) Gaming Monitor
  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

RTINGS notes that the gains diminish as refresh rate rises, so moving from a basic rate to a moderately higher one can matter more than paying for the highest figure available. Compare the refresh rate supported at the monitor’s native resolution over the specific connection you will use. If you intend to use HDR or a 10-bit color mode, verify that the same resolution and refresh rate remain available in that configuration. RTINGS explains its refresh-rate testing and the relationship between a display’s capabilities and its input signal.

For consoles, check the actual output modes supported by your console and games before paying extra for a rate you may not be able to use. Capabilities can vary by device, game, and mode, so confirm the exact combination rather than relying on a general claim about a console generation.

Compare real motion performance, not just “1 ms” claims

Refresh rate and response time describe different parts of motion performance. Refresh rate is the screen’s update frequency; response time concerns how quickly pixels transition between colors. Two monitors with the same refresh rate can therefore handle motion differently.

Dell 27 240Hz Gaming Monitor - SE2726HG - 27-inch FHD (1920x1080) Display, in-Plane Switching (IPS) Technology, AMD FreeSync Premium, TÜV 3-Star, 2X HDMI, DisplayPort 1.4, Tilt
  • Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
  • Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
  • Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
  • Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
  • Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.

Look for independent measurements of the exact model, including pixel response behavior and the effects of its overdrive settings. Overdrive can speed transitions, but its settings may involve tradeoffs. Treat a manufacturer’s “1 ms” figure as an advertised specification, not a guarantee of the result you will see in real use. RTINGS describes its response-time and cumulative-absolute-deviation methods in its buying guide.

Match VRR support to your PC or console

Variable refresh rate (VRR) lets a display adjust its timing to follow changing frame rates from the source, helping reduce tearing. Common formats include AMD FreeSync, NVIDIA G-SYNC, and HDMI Forum VRR. Check that the device, monitor, and connection support a compatible format; do not assume that a feature name alone guarantees compatibility.

  • PlayStation 5: RTINGS reports that PS5 supports HDMI Forum VRR. Check that the specific monitor supports the desired console signal and VRR mode.
  • Xbox Series X|S: RTINGS reports support for HDMI Forum VRR and FreeSync. Confirm the monitor’s compatibility with the signal you plan to use.
  • PC: Check the graphics card, monitor, and connection together for support of the VRR format you intend to use.

Some displays can exhibit VRR flicker, which may be more noticeable in dark scenes and is more common with some panel types. Model-specific reviews can help identify whether that behavior is a concern. RTINGS compares the formats and compatibility considerations in its FreeSync vs. G-SYNC guide.

Verify the ports and signal you need

The source and display both need enough bandwidth to carry your target resolution, refresh rate, and color format. A port may work while still limiting the mode you intended to use, so check the actual supported signal rather than inferring all capabilities from a port-version label.

For a console setup, verify the monitor’s compatibility with the console’s resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and VRR modes. RTINGS’ console-compatibility methodology checks supported console signals. HDMI’s specification overview describes VRR as a feature intended to reduce or eliminate lag, stutter, and frame tearing; the monitor and source still need to support the mode you want.

Do not buy a new cable just because its version number is higher. Use a cable appropriate for the source, monitor, and target bandwidth; replace an existing cable only if it cannot carry the required signal. For help understanding the monitor’s input-lag measurements, see RTINGS’ input-lag testing overview.

Judge HDR by measured performance

An HDR label does not establish how convincing HDR gaming will look. Compare measured HDR brightness, color gamut, and color volume for the exact monitor, and consider whether its contrast and brightness meet your expectations. RTINGS advises evaluating those results rather than relying on certification tiers alone; its guide also notes that the highest VRR tiers are not necessary for good HDR. See its VRR and HDR comparison.

Pay for secondary features only when they solve a real need

A stand with useful adjustments, a USB hub, speakers, or a KVM switch can be worthwhile if it fits your setup. Treat each as a separate requirement: verify the exact product documentation for the feature, how it works, and whether it is included. Do not pay a premium for features you will not use, or assume that a monitor with a higher price has better ergonomics or extras without checking its specifications.
