Start by defining the award’s eligible field, then judge the remaining games against the same published criteria. A prominent ineligible release should narrow the comparison—not decide which eligible game wins. Because no award, edition, or excluded game is specified here, its eligibility cannot be verified; the rules must be checked for the particular award and year.
Confirm what “ineligible” means for this award
There is no universal Game of the Year eligibility rule. Identify the award and edition, then consult that edition’s official rules or announcement before discussing who should win. Eligibility can depend on release dates, territory, category, or the kind of release being considered.
For example, BAFTA’s 2027 Games Awards rules set a UK release window of 15 November 2025 to 19 November 2026. For Best Game, those rules generally exclude remasters, exclude remakes, and do not treat downloadable content as a new game. They also exclude Evolving Game entries from the automatically considered Best Game pool. These are rules for that BAFTA edition, not a template for other awards.
The Game Awards’ FAQ gives a different, edition-specific example: its 2025 cutoff was Friday, November 21, 2025, at 9pm PT. It also says games released in previous years can qualify in all categories if the jury considers their new content, improvements, or service updates meritorious. That provision should not be assumed to apply to another year or award.

Classify the case accurately. A release may be formally ineligible, may have arrived after a cutoff, or may have been eligible but omitted from a shortlist. Those are different situations, and only the first two establish that it cannot be chosen under the relevant rules.
Set the eligible field before weighing contenders
Once the exclusion is verified, list the remaining eligible candidates for the relevant category. Do not treat the missing release as an invisible benchmark that every contender must imitate, or let its absence automatically elevate a particular alternative. The winner should emerge from comparison within the actual eligible field.

Eligibility can also vary by category within the same award. BAFTA’s 2027 information, for instance, says games released before its eligibility window may still be eligible in Evolving Game if they receive regular content updates and have a substantial future roadmap. A game’s status in one category therefore does not settle its status in every category.
Choose criteria that make the judgment explainable
If the award publishes a rubric, use it first. BAFTA’s Games Awards rules tell voting members to play games in contention, apply their expertise, and base decisions on “the single criteria of Excellence.” That is the official standard; the dimensions below are a practical way to explain a judgment, not a claim that BAFTA uses this exact checklist.

- Craft and execution: How well does the game deliver its core systems, presentation, and overall experience?
- Originality: Does it contribute distinctive ideas or a fresh take on familiar ones?
- Design and play: Are its mechanics, pacing, controls, and progression coherent and engaging?
- Narrative or emotional impact: Where relevant, how effectively does it create meaning, character, atmosphere, or feeling?
- Technical quality: How well does it perform and function on the platforms being judged?
- Success on its own aims: Does it accomplish what it set out to do, rather than merely matching another game’s genre or scale?
These criteria need not carry equal weight for every award. State the standard and any weighting clearly, then apply it to each contender rather than changing the test to favor a preferred game.

A critic’s pick, a jury decision, a committee selection, and a public vote represent different judgments. Name the decision-making body and describe its process accurately; do not present one model as the universal meaning of Game of the Year.

- Committee: Japan Game Awards says its Game of the Year winner is selected after discussion by its Executive Committee.
- Members: BAFTA expects voting members to play games in contention and apply their expertise under its Excellence standard.
Compare the shortlist and show the trade-offs
Make a side-by-side comparison using the same criteria for every eligible finalist. Explain where each game stands out and where it is less convincing, taking account of what each is trying to achieve. A game need not lead on every dimension to be the strongest overall choice; the explanation should show why its particular strengths matter most under the stated standard.

Then name the winner and connect that choice to the criteria. If the excluded release is likely to shape the discussion, say plainly that it was outside the eligible pool and explain how that affects the scope of the decision—not the merits of the eligible candidates.
What a defensible GOTY decision establishes
A transparent choice does not prove that every player would rank the games the same way. It establishes a narrower, more useful claim: under the specified award’s rules, for the specified edition and category, the named decision-makers judged one eligible game to be the strongest fit for the stated standard.
