The best free personal WordPress theme depends on what your site needs to do: present a concise profile, showcase portfolio projects, introduce your services, or publish posts over time. The 11 options below are candidates for different jobs—not a universal ranking. Feature descriptions and performance figures are reported by Colorlib’s 2026 roundup; they are not independent hands-on findings.

Start with the kind of personal site you need

A profile that changes occasionally can work as a compact page with an introduction, biography, selected work, and contact details. A blog has different demands: readers need comfortable post layouts and ways to browse older writing, such as archives and categories. A portfolio needs project presentation, while a CV-oriented site should make experience and qualifications easy to find.

Choose the site’s main purpose first. Then check whether a theme’s free version supplies the layout and editing approach you need, or whether the advertised setup relies on a plugin, paid plan, or extension.

11 free themes, matched to different personal-site needs

The following descriptions reflect Colorlib’s reporting. Check each theme’s current WordPress.org listing and free-tier boundaries before installing; directory availability and product features can change.

Illdy: a one-page profile

Illdy is a candidate for a single-page profile organized into sections such as About, Portfolio, Testimonials, and Contact. Colorlib describes its design as older and reports a heavier test result than newer frameworks, so it is less compelling if a lean starting point is your priority.

Astra: a quick portfolio starter

Astra suits someone who wants to build from a portfolio starter rather than arrange every section from scratch. Colorlib says its Personal Portfolio starter requires the Starter Templates plugin. More extensive controls are part of Astra Pro, not the free theme.

Blocksy: a freelancer site built to attract clients

Blocksy is a fit for a freelancer who needs to explain services and make it easy for prospective clients to get in touch. The Beverr starter cited by Colorlib includes placeholder copy that must be replaced. Its service-oriented setup may be more elaborate than a simple profile requires.

Perfect Portfolio: project-led work samples

Perfect Portfolio is aimed at a freelancer who wants projects to have their own pages, rather than appearing only as a list of links. Colorlib reports the heaviest page weight and slowest LCP in its comparison, so consider that trade-off if page performance is important.

GeneratePress: a minimal, performance-conscious site

GeneratePress is a candidate for a simple personal site where a lean starting point matters. Colorlib says the free theme needs styling to look finished; its site library requires GP Premium. Do not treat that library as part of the free theme.

Zakra: a portfolio you expect to restructure

Zakra may suit someone who wants to rearrange a portfolio’s structure. Colorlib reports free header and footer builders, while the broader starter library is part of Pro. Confirm which specific layout or starter you want before choosing it.

OceanWP: room to expand

OceanWP is presented as an option for a personal site expected to grow. Colorlib notes that useful extras are in paid extensions and reports a heavier test result than the leanest frameworks. Account for the cost of any extension needed for your planned setup.

Raft: block-based template editing

Raft is suited to writers who want to edit templates, headers, and footers using blocks. That full-site editing approach may feel unfamiliar if you have only edited pages and posts. Colorlib also describes its demo as general-purpose rather than tailored specifically to personal sites.

Neve: a CV or About page plus regular posts

Neve fits a site that needs a resume or About page alongside ongoing writing. Colorlib describes its styling as deliberately plain and says the wider template library is Pro, so expect to do some design work in the free version.

Lovecraft: typography and writing first

Lovecraft is a candidate for a writing-led site where typography and post presentation are central. Colorlib does not describe portfolio or project layouts for it, so look elsewhere if showcasing work is a core requirement.

Activello: posts with a prominent slider

Activello is aimed at a post-focused personal site with a prominent slider. Colorlib characterizes it as Bootstrap-era rather than block-first and says it lacks portfolio layouts. That makes it a narrower choice for writers than for people presenting project work.

How Colorlib’s performance comparison should inform your choice

Colorlib reports testing the themes with identical content. In that test, lower page weight is better. The figures below are the publisher’s results, not universal speed promises or independent benchmark results; hosting, plugins, images, and theme configuration can change what a real site delivers.

Theme Page weight Requests Lighthouse score LCP
GeneratePress 277 KB 14 99/100 1.8 seconds
Neve 299 KB 15 99/100 2.1 seconds
Blocksy 330 KB 13 95/100 2.6 seconds
Astra 425 KB 14 92/100 3.2 seconds
Zakra 451 KB 17 91/100 3.1 seconds
Raft 511 KB 17 87/100 3.3 seconds
Lovecraft 750 KB 25 76/100 5 seconds
Activello 762 KB 25 77/100 4.4 seconds
OceanWP 802 KB 29 72/100 5.3 seconds
Illdy 1,086 KB 38 65/100 6.8 seconds
Perfect Portfolio 2,348 KB 32 55/100 13.5 seconds

Within that particular comparison, GeneratePress and Neve had the lowest page weights and fastest LCP results; Perfect Portfolio had the highest page weight and longest LCP. Treat those as clues for narrowing a shortlist, not predictions for your own site.

Check current availability and what is actually free

Use the WordPress.org theme directory to confirm whether a theme is currently listed. Its filters include Blog and Portfolio categories as well as layout and feature options. The directory states, “Over 15,000 free themes to customize your WordPress site”; that headline is distinct from the live count of listings displayed on the page.

Before building around a demo or feature, verify whether it belongs to the free theme, requires a separate plugin, or is reserved for a paid plan or extension. In this roundup, Colorlib identifies Astra’s Personal Portfolio starter as requiring the Starter Templates plugin, GeneratePress’s site library as requiring GP Premium, and expanded options for several other themes as paid. A theme being free does not make every starter, customization, or add-on free.

  1. Write down the site’s primary job: profile, portfolio, CV, or ongoing posts.
  2. Shortlist themes whose described layouts match that job, and note any missing project or post features.
  3. Check the WordPress.org directory for the current listing and explore its Blog or Portfolio filters.
  4. Confirm the exact plugin, premium tier, or extension needed for the starter and controls you plan to use.
  5. Only then install a candidate and build a representative page with your own images and content before committing to its structure.

Make the final choice by fit, not by a single score

For a minimal, speed-conscious starting point, compare GeneratePress and Neve, while accounting for their styling and premium-library caveats. For a freelancer portfolio, consider Blocksy, Astra, Perfect Portfolio, or Zakra according to whether you need service presentation, a starter, project pages, or restructuring flexibility. For a writing-first site, compare Raft, Lovecraft, and Activello based on whether you prefer block-based template editing, typographic focus, or a prominent slider.

The right free option is the one that supports the site’s primary job without forcing you to depend on a paid feature you did not plan to buy. Check current availability and the free-versus-paid boundary before you build around any theme.
