Proton VPN Free is the clearest first choice for Linux users who want unlimited data and can accept automatic selection from its free server locations. Windscribe Free is a practical alternative if its supported distributions fit your system and a monthly data cap works for you. Neither should be treated as a universal fastest VPN, and a free plan does not guarantee streaming access.
Which free Linux VPN should you choose?
Choose based on your Linux distribution, whether you want a graphical app or command line, and how much data you use. Proton VPN Free stands out for unlimited data and time. Windscribe Free trades a data limit for another option with documented Linux desktop support. PrivadoVPN Free appears in a 2026 independent comparison, but its official Linux compatibility was not verified in the available material, so confirm support before relying on it.
| Service | Linux support evidence | Free-plan terms | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN Free | Official GUI support for Debian, Ubuntu, and Fedora; official CLI support for Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, and Arch. | Unlimited data and time. Free connections are automatically assigned among listed free locations; streaming is not guaranteed. | Users who prioritize no data cap and do not need to choose a particular free server. |
| Windscribe Free | Official desktop app; supported distributions and minimum versions are listed in its Linux guide. | 2 GB per month by default, or 10 GB per month after confirming an email address; free accounts connect only to free locations. | Users whose distribution is supported and whose monthly use fits the allowance. |
| PrivadoVPN Free | Listed as Linux-compatible in Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison; current official Linux compatibility was not verified. | Tom’s Guide reports 10 GB of high-speed data per month followed by unlimited slower data, and reports streaming support. | A lead for streaming-minded users willing to verify current Linux support and plan details directly. |
What to check before installing
Match support to your distribution and app type
Linux support is not one-size-fits-all: a provider may offer a graphical app for some distributions and a command-line client for others. Proton VPN lists Debian, Ubuntu, and Fedora for its GUI, and Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, and Arch for its CLI. See the Proton VPN Linux download page for current requirements and installation instructions.
Windscribe’s Linux setup guide, dated August 26, 2026, lists Ubuntu 22.04 or newer, Fedora 36 or newer, openSUSE Leap 15.6, Arch with glibc 2.35 or newer, and supported immutable distributions. Check the Windscribe Linux setup guide for the current list and steps before installing; distribution support can change.

Decide whether a data cap matters
Proton says its free plan has unlimited data and time. Its free connections are automatically assigned from locations in the Netherlands, Japan, Romania, Poland, Singapore, Norway, Canada, Switzerland, Mexico, and the United States. That is useful for avoiding a monthly allowance, but it does not mean you can select any location or always connect to a particular one. See Proton’s free Linux VPN page and its free-versus-paid plan comparison.
Windscribe says free accounts receive 2 GB monthly by default, rising to 10 GB monthly after email confirmation, and can use only free locations. Its free-plan details are on the Linux setup guide; the provider also describes its free plan on its support page. These are provider-stated plan terms, not independent measurements.

Consider streaming and server choice separately
Proton says streaming access is guaranteed only on paid plans. A 2026 Tom’s Guide comparison reports streaming support for PrivadoVPN Free, but reviewer results can change as services and VPN access change. If streaming is the main reason for choosing a VPN, check current compatibility with the streaming service and the Linux app before signing up; do not assume a free plan will work reliably.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat Linux app features and privacy claims establish
Proton’s Linux documentation says its GUI and CLI include DNS and IPv6 leak protection; it also describes kill-switch options and other advanced features for the GUI. Proton describes its app as open source and independently audited, and states that it is based in Switzerland and follows a no-logs policy. Those are provider statements about its product and policies, not a guarantee of anonymity or protection from every threat. Review the Linux documentation and the provider’s free Linux page for details.

Windscribe describes its free plan as funded by paid subscribers. That is also a provider statement; readers evaluating privacy should read the provider’s current policy and understand what data is collected, retained, or disclosed rather than relying on a general no-logs label.
How much confidence should you put in Linux VPN comparisons?
Independent reviews can help identify options, but their results have a defined scope. Top10VPN says it tested 23 free VPNs and found that only Proton VPN and Windscribe had dedicated Linux GUI apps among those tested; its page reports testing last conducted in August 2026. This describes that review’s sample, not proof that no other provider offers a GUI. See Top10VPN’s Linux comparison.

Can you choose the fastest free VPN for Linux?
There is no supported universal fastest pick here: the available material does not provide a directly comparable, controlled Linux benchmark of these free plans. Real-world speed varies with your location, network, protocol, server load, and plan restrictions. A reviewer or provider speed claim from different test conditions would not establish which service is fastest for your connection.

For a practical choice, first confirm that the official client supports your distribution, then try the service from your usual network and location. Compare how well it performs for your own browsing rather than treating an unpaired speed figure as a ranking.
