For a copyable image link and website embeds, Postimages is the clearest fit in this shortlist. Imgur can work for noncommercial public sharing when you use its embed unit, while Flickr is geared toward displaying photos in a community and Google Photos is a personal library—not a public hotlink host. These services have different limits and rules, so the right choice depends on whether you need an embed, a public portfolio, or private organization.
The available first-party information supports four services, not five fully verified recommendations. Rather than present an unverified fifth option as equivalent, this guide compares the four and explains what to check before choosing another host.
Compare the free image hosts by what you need to do
| Service | Best fit | Free-tier limit or rule | Linking and access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Postimages | Sharing and embedding images | Uploads up to 32 MB; hotlinked images up to 1280 pixels. The free plan lists 1,000 API units monthly. | Designed for image links and hotlinking; no password protection. |
| Imgur | Noncommercial public sharing | Maximum 50 uploads per IP address per hour. | Its FAQ recommends the embed unit, but says not to use Imgur as a CDN or for commercial hosting. |
| Flickr | Public photo display and community discovery | Free accounts: 1,000 uploaded items and 50 non-public photos or videos. Free accounts cannot download original or large-size photos above 1024 pixels. | Embeds and external links continue to work, but free users have restricted access to original-size content. |
| Google Photos | Personal photo organization and sharing | Up to 15 GB shared across Google Photos, Gmail, and Google Drive; Original quality uploads count against it. | A personal photo library and sharing product, not a public hotlink service. |
Limits and policies can change. Check the linked provider pages before relying on a particular allowance or permitted use.

Choose based on your image-hosting job
You need a direct link or an image embedded on a site
Postimages is the most directly aligned option here. It describes its service for forums, websites, blogs, and social media, and offers hotlinked images up to 1280 pixels on its free plan. Its FAQ says uploads can be up to 32 MB and 10,000 × 10,000 pixels, with unlimited total uploads; unusually high resource use may prompt contact from the service. See the Postimages plan details and FAQ.

Imgur is another option for public, noncommercial sharing, but follow its stated use case: its Help Center recommends the embed unit for a website or blog and cautions against treating the service as a content delivery network. It says Imgur is not for commercial image hosting or use on a site that makes money, including through ads. Its FAQ also sets a maximum of 50 uploads per IP address per hour. Read the Imgur FAQ for Forum Users before embedding.
You want a public photo display or portfolio
Flickr supports public photo display and community discovery, but its free account is constrained. The Help Center page, updated March 4, 2026, limits free accounts to 1,000 uploaded items and 50 non-public photos or videos. Free users may post Safe content only and may not post commercial content. Flickr says content exceeding the limits may lead to suspension or deletion, so do not treat the free tier as unlimited archival storage or a commercial portfolio.

Flickr’s April 2025 service update says free members cannot download original or large-size photos above 1024 pixels. Embeds and external links do not break, but free-account access to original-size content is restricted. See Flickr’s free-account limits and enforcement and its 2025 download update.
You want a personal photo library
Google Photos is intended for organizing and sharing a personal library, not generating public hotlinks for a website. Google provides up to 15 GB per account shared across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos; photos and videos uploaded in Original quality count toward that quota. If an account runs out of storage, it cannot save new photos and videos.
Rank #3

Google says stored content might be deleted if Photos is unused for two years or more, and that it provides at least three months’ warning before deletion due to inactivity. Keep the account active and monitor its shared storage if you rely on the library. Details are in Google Photos activity and storage help.
Check privacy, metadata, and long-term access
Do not treat an unlisted link as private storage
Postimages says access is limited to people who have the image link and that uploads are not placed in a global catalog. However, it does not provide password protection, and its FAQ says it is probably unsuitable for collections requiring real privacy. A link that is not publicly listed is not the same as access-controlled storage.

Remove location data before anonymous uploads
Postimages retains EXIF metadata by default. Account users can enable removal, but anonymous uploads always retain the original EXIF data, according to the Postimages FAQ. If a photo contains location or other sensitive metadata, strip it before uploading anonymously.

Free hosting limits, download rules, account activity policies, and service terms can affect access. Flickr restricts original-size downloads on free accounts, while Google Photos can delete stored content after prolonged inactivity. Do not make any of these free services the only copy of irreplaceable images.

What to verify before choosing a fifth service
ImgBB, imgbox, Cloudinary, and Wikimedia Commons are possible candidates for different needs, including direct links, simple image hosting, developer-controlled delivery, and freely licensed or public-domain media. Current official plan and policy details for these candidates are not established here, so they are not presented as verified free-tier recommendations.
