Choose a fitness tracker by matching its workout modes, GPS, health features, phone compatibility, and fit to the things you will actually use—not by counting features. Start with your usual activities, decide whether you need outdoor routes without carrying your phone, then check the exact model’s health functions and app support.

How do I choose a fitness tracker?

  1. List your usual workouts. Identify whether you mainly walk, run, cycle, swim, lift weights, or switch among activities. Check that the exact tracker supports those exercise modes and whether it can recognize any of them automatically.
  2. Decide whether you need GPS without your phone. For outdoor routes and distance, check whether the model has built-in GPS or uses connected GPS from a phone. If you do not want to carry your phone, connected GPS may not meet your needs.
  3. Choose the health trends you will review. Heart rate and sleep duration may be enough for some people. If you want a specific feature such as ECG, verify that it works on the exact model in your country and meets any age, software, or app requirements.
  4. Check phone and app compatibility. Confirm the tracker works with your phone and that the metrics you care about sync to the apps you use. Integrations do not necessarily pass along every metric.
  5. Consider comfort, charging, and total cost. The tracker must fit securely enough for regular wear and sensor contact. Compare current manufacturer specifications for battery life, charging, price, and any subscription requirement before buying.

What workout features do you need?

Exercise-mode support and automatic recognition are different capabilities. Google Health lists walking, running, biking, sports, elliptical, aerobics, swimming, and rowing among activities automatically detected by the Fitbit Inspire series, which includes Inspire 3. That list does not establish that every model provides equally detailed metrics for every sport, so check the specifications for the exact tracker and activity you care about.

If you mostly do one type of exercise, prioritize useful tracking for that activity over a long list of modes you will never select. If your workouts vary, look for the modes you use and decide whether automatic detection matters—for example, if you often forget to start a workout manually.

Do you need GPS in a fitness tracker?

GPS is most useful when you want a record of an outdoor route or distance. Check the exact model’s specifications to see whether it has built-in GPS or relies on a connected phone. With connected GPS, you need to bring the phone; built-in GPS can record a route without it.

A GPS fix may take longer around tall buildings or under heavy tree cover because the device needs a clear path to satellites. Google Health also notes that distance can be less accurate when GPS is unavailable for part of a workout, and that a weak signal can affect route and other activity data. If your activities are mostly indoors or you do not review route maps, GPS may be a lower priority than comfort, workout support, or battery and charging convenience.

Which health features are worth prioritizing?

Heart rate and sleep trends

Choose the few metrics you expect to check regularly, such as heart rate, sleep duration, or heart-rate variability (HRV). Manufacturers describe different combinations of health functions, and availability can vary by model and region. A feature list is useful only if the device supports the feature you need and you will use its information.

ECG and other advanced functions

ECG is not a standard feature on every tracker. Apple describes its ECG app as producing a single-lead electrocardiogram. Google Health lists ECG support for certain Fitbit and Pixel Watch products, while Garmin says its ECG app is limited to selected compatible watches and regions. Check each manufacturer’s current compatibility information, including country, age, software, and app requirements, before buying.

Google Health reports that, in a study of 440 people, its ECG app algorithm correctly identified people with AFib 98.7% of the time and people with normal sinus rhythm 100% of the time. The source page does not state the study’s publication year. Those results refer to that app’s study; they are not a general accuracy rating for wearables, a comparison between brands, or a guarantee for an individual reading.

How can fit and movement affect readings?

Wrist-based readings depend on sensor contact and movement. Fitbit guidance advises wearing the device snugly against the skin and, during exercise, higher on the wrist. Repeated wrist bending can interfere with heart-rate readings: Google Health specifically notes that activities such as cycling and weightlifting often involve frequent bending.

Fit matters for consistency as well as comfort. If possible, try the band and case on before buying; a tracker you find uncomfortable may be one you wear less often. No single fit or sensor placement removes every source of variation in wrist-based readings.

Will the tracker work with your phone and apps?

Check the exact tracker’s phone requirements and identify where you want its information to appear. Google Health says some metrics are not available in Google Health and that values can differ between apps because apps may use different available data or calculations. Do not assume that a metric shown in the manufacturer’s app will also appear in a connected health or workout app.

For a comparison, record the exact model, compatible phone platforms, GPS type, supported workout modes, health functions and eligibility limits, app destinations, fit, battery and charging specifications, price, and subscription requirements. Fitbit Inspire 3, Garmin Venu 2 Plus, and the Apple Watch family are examples of products with documented activity or health functions—not a ranked shortlist or an assurance of current stock. Verify details on the manufacturer’s page for the model and region you plan to buy.

What fitness trackers can—and cannot—tell you

Consumer wearables provide fitness or wellness information, not a diagnosis. Garmin explicitly says certain health metrics are not medical devices. Do not use a tracker reading to diagnose or rule out a condition; if you have a health concern, speak with an appropriate clinician and follow the device’s official instructions.
