A Questionable tag means your quarterback’s availability is uncertain—not that he is automatically out or has a defined chance of playing. Check current team news, his likely workload, your platform’s lineup locks, and the replacement’s role before deciding. Make the move before the earlier lock that applies to the starter or replacement.
What does Questionable mean for a fantasy quarterback?
It means availability is uncertain. NFL Fantasy’s explainer describes “Q” as uncertain whether the player will play and says he may be a game-time decision: NFL Fantasy’s injury designation explainer. The label does not give a reliable numeric probability, so do not treat it as a forecast by itself.
Practice reports are clues, not guarantees. A DNP, limited, or full practice designation does not settle whether the quarterback will play on game day. Check the latest team announcement or current, trusted reporting, then check the official inactive list when it is released. Inactives are commonly reported about 90 minutes before kickoff, but that timing is not a universal fantasy-platform deadline.
How to decide whether to start him or use a replacement
- Confirm the latest status. Look for current team or reliable reporting rather than relying only on an earlier injury tag or practice report.
- Check your available quarterbacks. Consider players already on your roster and those you could add as free agents or through waivers. Confirm roster space, waiver priority or FAAB requirements, and whether the transaction can be completed in time.
- Assess role, not just active status. A quarterback can be active but face a reported snap, pitch, or workload limitation. Compare his expected opportunity with the replacement’s likely role.
- Fit the choice to your league. Consider the matchup and your scoring settings; projections are estimates, not guarantees.
- Make the change before the relevant lock. Use your platform’s rules and game schedule to identify the earliest lock that could prevent the move.
Compare replacement quarterbacks on the factors that matter
If you have more than one plausible option, compare them directly. No universal player ranking follows from an injury designation alone: the right choice depends on current news, your league, and the quarterbacks actually available to you.

| Factor | What to check |
|---|---|
| Availability | Is the replacement confirmed available, or is his own status uncertain? |
| Expected role | Is he expected to start and handle a normal workload, or is there a reported limitation? |
| Kickoff and lineup lock | Will you still be able to change your lineup after more news arrives? |
| Matchup and scoring | How does the expected opportunity fit your league’s scoring format and matchup? |
| Acquisition feasibility | Can you add him in time, and do your roster, waiver, or FAAB rules allow it? |
Why kickoff time and lineup locks can decide the move
A late-playing questionable starter cannot be safely covered by an early-playing backup if that backup locks before the starter is ruled inactive. Check both players’ kickoff times and your platform’s rules before choosing a fallback.
NFL.com’s Official Rules for 2025 describe NFL.com mechanics, including changing player status before that player’s NFL team is scheduled to start in the platform’s system, as well as waiver and free-agent rules. NFL.com’s lineup guide also uses examples with a five-minutes-before-kickoff lock. These are NFL.com details, not rules for every fantasy service or custom league. Check your own platform and league settings for the actual lock and transaction rules.

When the decision is still uncertain
If there is no clear update before your lineup deadline, compare the starter’s uncertain availability and workload with a replacement you can actually start. If the replacement is already locked, he cannot serve as a late safety net on that platform. Do not wait for the inactive list if doing so would leave you unable to make a legal lineup change.
