Start with the injured receiver’s direct backup and other teammates likely to gain routes or targets, but choose based on the opportunity they are likely to keep—not just the backup label or one big game. Then compare candidates’ roles, recurring targets, schedule and cost under your league’s waiver rules.
How to assess replacement candidates
The waiver wire is the pool of players your league allows managers to claim, but the claim process and priority rules vary by league. First check which receivers are actually available, then compare the realistic options against your lineup needs.
1. Start with the injury’s likely beneficiaries
Search for the injured player’s direct backup, then look for teammates who may take on more routes, targets or a steadier role. The backup is a sensible first place to look, not an automatic pickup: a listed backup may still see too little playing time to be dependable. NFL.com fantasy analyst Marcas Grant describes replacing injured players as one of the waiver wire’s primary uses: NFL.com’s waiver-wire guidance.

Give more weight to a player who regularly plays or is positioned to take on a meaningful share of the offense than to someone whose case rests on one high-scoring game. A spike in catches or touchdowns can be difficult to repeat when the player is not regularly involved. Adam Rank of NFL.com advises looking for players gaining playing time and opportunities rather than relying on name recognition alone: NFL.com’s waiver-wire advice.

3. Compare opportunity, not only the box score
When trustworthy data are available, check routes run and targets alongside receptions and receiving yards. Targets show that a player is being looked for; routes help indicate how regularly he is involved in the passing game. Neither guarantees future production, but together they offer useful context for judging whether a recent result reflects a growing role or a one-game spike.
For example, Matt Okada’s NFL.com Week 2 article reported that Jalen Coker had eight catches for 138 yards and two touchdowns on nine targets in the referenced Week 1 game. The same article reported that Devaughn Vele had seven catches for 69 yards and a touchdown on nine targets. These are dated examples of game-level production and opportunity, not current pickup recommendations or proof that either player’s role would persist. See the NFL.com Week 2 article.

4. Use the schedule to break close calls
Once you have identified candidates with plausible roles, compare their upcoming opponents. Schedule can help distinguish two otherwise similar options, especially if you are uncertain about how repeatable one player’s recent production is. It should not outweigh a clear difference in playing time or opportunity.

Check your league’s waiver rules before claiming
Waiver order and processing differ across leagues and platforms. Check your league settings or platform’s help information to confirm how claims work, when they process and whether a claim affects your priority. Do not assume that another league’s waiver order or timing applies to yours. NFL.com explains that waiver procedures can vary by league: NFL Fantasy waiver-claim support.

Where your league uses a bid system, weigh the player’s likely role against the value of keeping resources for later claims. The sources do not establish a universal bid amount or scoring formula, so use your league’s settings and your roster’s needs.

If no available receiver offers a useful role, look for a trade with a manager whose roster needs complement yours. For example, a manager with more viable receivers than starting spots may be open to a deal that addresses a different position need. Judge the trade by whether it improves your lineup, rather than treating a name or reputation as a guarantee of value. Trade values are subjective, and a deal should fit both rosters.
