Choose a backup wide receiver with either a dependable role now or a specific, believable path to more routes and targets. Then weigh that opportunity against your scoring format, lineup needs, bench space, and waiver options. A big game alone is not a reason to keep a player if his weekly role is unlikely to last.
Decide what you need the backup to do
A reserve receiver can fill different jobs: cover an upcoming bye or injury, provide a usable flex option, or sit on your bench as a high-upside stash. Decide which job matters before comparing names. A player who can help immediately may be a better fit than a speculative prospect when you need a starter this week; if your lineup is set, a credible path to a larger future role may be more valuable.
Account for your league’s scoring—standard, half-PPR, or PPR—along with starting receiver slots, roster size, and bench capacity. Reception volume matters more in PPR than in standard scoring. NFL.com’s 2026 breakout analysis uses PPR as its default, so its player assessments should not be treated as format-neutral. There is no universal number of receivers to roster: the right depth depends on your league and available alternatives.

Look for evidence that the receiver is part of the offense: routes, snaps, and targets. A player already earning regular opportunities has a clearer route to useful production than one whose case depends entirely on a starter getting hurt. NFL.com’s Matt Okada, identified as NFL & Fantasy Content, puts it plainly: “Volume is king in fantasy football.” He also writes, “Finding the rosters where opportunity tells a promising story is a key component of smart drafting.”

Use production in context. Ask whether recent targets and routes reflect a sustained role or a one-off game script, an injury absence, or another temporary change. NFL.com fantasy analyst Marcas Grant cautions: “Even backups can have great days. But if that player doesn’t play regularly or get a steady amount of weekly touches, that huge day could be nearly impossible to replicate.” For a receiver, the practical test is whether his routes and targets are likely to continue.
Judge upside by the path to a bigger role
Bench upside is useful, but it should have a concrete explanation. For a lower-role receiver, identify what would need to change: more routes, a teammate’s absence, a depth-chart move, or evidence that the player can earn targets when given a chance. A “backup” label by itself does not establish fantasy value.

Keep contingent cases conditional. If a starter is injured, the reserve could see more routes while that player is out; check team updates and actual usage before treating the possibility as a new role. NFL.com’s 2026 advice favors bench players with upside, while Grant’s roster-management guidance supports checking whether an injured player’s replacement is positioned for regular work.

- Current role: Is the player running routes and receiving targets as a regular part of the passing offense?
- Role-growth path: What specific change could increase his opportunity, and is there current evidence for that scenario?
- Scoring fit: Reception volume carries more weight in PPR than in standard formats.
- Timing: Do you need immediate bye-week or injury cover, or can you hold a longer-term stash?
- Replacement availability: Could you find a comparable receiver on waivers if you wait? NFL.com recommends considering a player’s expected regular role and upcoming schedule when assessing waiver additions.
Do not let a distant schedule forecast outweigh role evidence without a good reason. NFL.com’s 2026 draft advice notes that defenses and schedules change from year to year, making schedule strength a weak long-range tiebreaker on its own.
What recent NFL.com examples can—and cannot—tell you
Matt Okada’s 2026 NFL.com analysis uses player examples to illustrate opportunity, not to establish universal thresholds for future production. In its prior-season comparison, the article says five wide receivers with 150 or more targets finished among the top six in fantasy points; George Pickens, with 137 targets, was identified as an outlier. The comparison supports paying attention to volume, but it does not mean a particular target count guarantees a result.

The same article reports that Michael Wilson averaged 13.6 targets, 9.2 receptions, and 119.6 receiving yards per game, with four total touchdowns, across five games without Marvin Harrison Jr. It says those results equaled 26 fantasy points per game and cautions that Wilson was unlikely to repeat them with Harrison healthy. This is an example of how an absence can create opportunity, not a general projection for backup receivers.
Okada’s 2026 analysis also reports that Josh Downs had a 27.6% target rate and 66.7% catch rate over the prior two seasons in a comparison limited to players with at least 150 targets. Treat those figures as that article’s player analysis for the stated window, not as a promise of future output. The article’s accessible text does not provide a full publication date, and player roles can change.

Recheck the role before making an in-season move
In-season decisions should reflect current conditions, not an old projection or a preseason depth chart. Before adding or dropping a receiver, check:
- Recent injury reports and active status.
- Depth-chart movement and team or coach statements about the role.
- Recent routes, snaps, and targets, including whether a change followed an absence.
- Your next lineup need and the receivers currently available on waivers.
NFL Fantasy’s Best Available feature is described as using projections to estimate the point difference a player would make as a starter or bench piece, with views for this week, the rest of the season, playoffs, or another future week. Use a projection as one input rather than a substitute for checking real-world role and league settings; the current availability and details of the feature are not established here.
The 2026 player examples above are time-sensitive, not permanent recommendations. A specific player choice also depends on your scoring, league size, bench slots, roster, and waiver pool.
