A drill press mortising attachment can cut square mortises, but only if it fits your press and uses a matched chisel-and-bit set. Start by checking the exact press model and quill diameter against the attachment maker’s compatibility information; chuck size alone does not establish fit. There is no evidence here to rank every model by performance, so the useful comparison is between options that the manufacturer confirms will work with your machine.
What a drill press mortising attachment does
A hollow-chisel mortising attachment holds a square chisel around a rotating, auger-style bit. The bit removes most of the wood; the chisel edges form the square sides of the mortise. Grizzly describes its attachment as enabling square mortises in wood stock with a drill press and a matched mortising chisel and bit (Grizzly H7789).
This arrangement makes mortising possible on a compatible drill press; it does not mean every press can safely or conveniently use an attachment. The attachment, holder, chisel, bit, and machine must be suitable for one another.

Identify the exact press and quill
Find your drill press’s exact model number and consult the attachment manufacturer’s compatibility list and manual. Check the quill diameter and any supplied bushings against the manufacturer’s specifications. A chuck-size match is not proof that the attachment will mount correctly.

Fit lists differ between manufacturers. Grizzly H7789’s listed compatibility excludes some small and radial presses, while Delta’s legacy documentation names a different set of presses. Do not infer that a press listed for one attachment will accept another. Confirm current manufacturer documentation before buying, particularly for legacy models.
Confirm what the package actually includes
Once fit is established, compare the included chisel-and-bit sizes, holder and alignment adjustments, and any hold-down or workpiece support. Common kit sizes reported in the product guide are 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, and 1/2 inch, but not every package includes all four. Check the listing or manual for the specific package rather than assuming a standard assortment.

Match the chisel and bit to the holder
The chisel, bit, and holder are a working set. Use tooling intended for the selected attachment and confirm the shank and holder dimensions before buying replacement parts. A matching nominal mortise size alone does not prove that a set will fit or align correctly.

Lee Valley replacement chisels and bits are identified among the available replacement-tooling options, but that does not establish interchangeability with every attachment. Check the exact holder and shank requirements in the attachment documentation before ordering.
Set up and operate the attachment by its manual
Setup details and recommended speeds vary by model. The product guide reports differing RPM recommendations among manuals and an instruction in one setup to position the auger slightly proud of the chisel points. Neither detail should be applied as a universal rule. Use the manual for your attachment and tooling for setup, speed, workholding, and operation.

- Confirm fit: Match the press model and quill to the attachment’s compatibility information and required bushings.
- Inspect the tooling: Confirm that the chisel, bit, and holder are a compatible set and that the desired mortise size is included or available in a compatible replacement set.
- Follow the specific setup instructions: Install and align the attachment, set the tooling, secure the workpiece, and select speed as directed by the relevant manuals.
When a dedicated mortiser is the better equipment class
If no attachment is confirmed for your press, do not force a fit. A dedicated benchtop mortiser is a separate equipment option, not an attachment. Fine Woodworking’s historical review covered eight benchtop mortisers, but that sample does not establish which machine is best for your needs or provide a direct performance ranking against drill press attachments. Choose a dedicated machine only after assessing its own specifications and requirements.
