Choose a tank by matching its capacity to your equipment’s fuel needs and refill schedule, then confirm that its pump, mounting or transport arrangement, and documented use suit the job. Before buying or using it, verify the exact model’s diesel and transport suitability and check the rules that apply to your vehicle, worksite, and jurisdiction.
Start with fuel demand and carrying limits
Estimate how much diesel the equipment uses between refills and how often you can realistically bring fuel to it. A larger tank may reduce refill trips, but it also takes up more space and adds more weight when filled. Check the carrying capacity and layout of the truck, trailer, or other vehicle that will transport it, as well as where the tank will sit during dispensing.
One manufacturer lists diesel transfer tank capacities from 30 to 109 gallons. That range shows available product sizes, not a recommended capacity for every farm or construction operation. Compare the exact model’s dimensions and capacity with your fuel demand and carrying limits. Standard Technologies’ product information describes its listed configurations.
Choose the dispensing setup separately
A transfer tank may be sold without a pump, or configured with a manual or electric pump. Decide based on how often you dispense, whether power is available, and how the pump will work with the tank and equipment you plan to use. Confirm compatibility for the exact combination rather than assuming a pump fits every tank.

- Tank only: Consider this if you already have a compatible dispensing method or want to select one separately.
- Manual pump: Standard Technologies lists an HP-100-UL manual pump option. Verify its compatibility with the specific tank and the intended dispensing setup.
- 12-volt electric pump: Standard Technologies lists an optional 15 GPM 12-volt pump. Check that your setup can supply the required power and confirm the pump’s compatibility for the exact model.
Those pump and capacity figures are manufacturer-listed product specifications, not independent performance comparisons or a guarantee of what another model will provide. Review the current documentation for the tank and pump you are considering.
Confirm the tank’s intended use and transport suitability
Do not treat a product description or an approval for one context as proof that a tank is suitable for every diesel storage or transport situation. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model, including its intended fuel and use, and confirm that it fits your vehicle, route, and jobsite arrangement.

The federal interagency transportation guide distinguishes requirements by fuel and use. In the guide’s context, it says tanks that do not meet specifications for transporting flammable liquids may be used to transport diesel; it also describes approved tanks for other fuel circumstances. That distinction is not a blanket approval for every tank or trip. Verify the current requirements that apply to your actual tank, fuel, vehicle, route, and jurisdiction in the federal interagency fuel-transport guide.

Requirements depend on where and how the tank is used. OSHA’s 29 CFR 1910.106 addresses flammable-liquid storage and handling in general-industry contexts, including provisions on tank construction, approved containers and portable tanks, and emergency venting for portable tanks. Which provision applies depends on the circumstances.

OSHA’s June 9, 2000 interpretation concerns a specific question about a 1,000-gallon diesel storage tank at a construction site and the application of 29 CFR 1926.152. It is not a universal buying rule for truck-mounted or mobile transfer tanks. OSHA notes that interpretation letters apply existing requirements to specific circumstances and do not create additional employer obligations. Check the rules relevant to your own worksite and tank arrangement.

- Capacity: Does it cover the equipment’s expected fuel demand without exceeding the carrying vehicle or trailer’s limits?
- Configuration: Is it tank-only, manual-pump, or electric-pump, and is the dispensing setup compatible with your equipment and available power?
- Documented suitability: Does the model documentation identify diesel and the transport or storage use you need?
- Fit: Will its dimensions and arrangement work on the vehicle, trailer, or jobsite where it will be carried and used?
- Requirements: Have you checked the applicable transport, storage, and workplace rules for your circumstances?
