Choose a desk chair mat by matching its underside to your floor, then—if you have carpet—matching its support to the total carpet-and-pad depth. After that, size the mat for the chair’s full rolling area and check the product’s construction, care instructions and compatibility details.
Start with the floor surface
The mat’s underside determines whether it stays put without harming the floor. ES ROBBINS explains that carpet mats use cleats or grippers, while hard-floor mats have a smooth backing: What type of chair mat do I need?
- Carpet: Choose a mat specifically made for carpet, with the appropriate gripper or cleated backing. A smooth-backed hard-floor mat may shift on carpet.
- Hardwood, laminate, tile or vinyl: Choose a smooth-backed mat intended for hard floors. Carpet spikes or cleats can scratch or otherwise damage a hard surface.
- Polished or high-gloss flooring: Check whether the mat needs an anti-slip backing. Follow the flooring maker’s care guidance and confirm the mat is stable in its intended location.
Do not assume that a mat described simply as “clear” or made from a particular material is suitable for every surface. Check the exact product’s approved floor types and backing.

If you have carpet, measure its total depth
Carpet compatibility depends on the carpet and pad together—not just the visible pile. Measure from the carpet’s top surface through the pad to the subfloor. Deflecto’s Chair Mat Selection Guide suggests using a pile detector or an opened paper clip pushed through the carpet and pad; measure the portion that went in.

Use that measurement to check the chosen mat’s stated carpet range. Product makers and sellers do not all use the same pile bands, so a label such as “low pile” is not a universal measurement. For example, Deflecto’s guide calls pile up to 3/8 inch low, up to 1/2 inch medium, and over 1/2 inch high. Those are Deflecto’s classifications, not an industry-wide standard.
Also account for how often the chair rolls and the load it puts on the mat. Deflecto treats pile, frequency of use and load as separate selection factors. A mat designed for short pile may not support a deeper carpet well; verify whether the product’s stated pile limit includes the underlay.

Compare construction for your specific use
Chair mats are sold in materials including PVC, polypropylene, APET, enhanced polymer and polycarbonate. Material names alone do not establish which mat will work best: backing design, stiffness, floor compatibility and the manufacturer’s stated carpet range all matter. Compare the individual product’s permitted floor type and pile depth, construction, cleaning instructions and warranty.

Size the mat for the chair’s whole rolling zone
Measure where the casters actually travel as you pull the chair back, move it forward and roll it from side to side. The chair’s footprint while stationary is not enough if its wheels leave the protected area during normal use. Deflecto lists rectangular, lipped and workstation shapes; a lip can extend beneath the desk to cover the area where the chair rolls when pushed in.
Choose dimensions and a shape that keep the casters on the mat throughout ordinary movement. If wheels repeatedly cross the edge, the mat may shift and the floor outside it remains exposed.

Check the product before buying

Install and maintain it as directed
- Use the mat only on the floor type it is designed for, and follow its installation instructions.
- Keep the floor and mat clean and dry, and check that the mat lies flat and remains stable.
- Avoid wet locations and casters the mat’s instructions identify as unsuitable.
- Follow the product’s own cleaning, storage and warranty guidance. Repeatedly rolling casters off and back onto a mat can contribute to movement, so adjust the mat or chair area if that happens.
