Choose the card that gives you the most usable value on the online stores where you actually shop—not simply the one with the biggest advertised rewards rate. Compare eligible purchases, current card-linked offers, fees, limits, redemption choices, and purchase protections, then subtract any annual fee. If you carry a balance, interest can outweigh the rewards; paying in full is usually the key to keeping sale savings worthwhile.
Start with the online purchases you expect to make
Make a short list of the merchants and purchase types you use during sales. For each candidate card, check the issuer’s current product page and full terms for which transactions earn rewards, whether the merchant or category qualifies, any caps or exclusions, and how rewards can be redeemed.
Do not assume an advertised online-shopping rate applies to every website, marketplace, or payment wallet. Issuers define eligible purchases in their own terms. The Amazon Visa product page, for example, sets out specific earning categories and terms; it is an example of what to check, not a universal recommendation.

Rewards you earn on purchases
Ongoing rewards are earned after an eligible purchase according to the card’s terms. Their value depends on what you can actually redeem. Check the issuer’s available redemption options before treating points as equivalent to cash or assigning them a fixed value.

Card-linked offers that may require activation
Some issuers show eligible customers targeted offers in an app or online account. Chase describes offers that a cardholder activates on a particular card, then uses at an eligible merchant to receive a statement credit. Availability is not necessarily the same for every cardholder. Before buying, verify the offer in your own account, the merchant and eligible products, activation status, spending threshold, deadline, exclusions, and posting rules. See Chase Freedom Flex offer information.
Estimate the value you can use
For a rough comparison, multiply expected eligible spending by the effective value of the rewards you expect to redeem, add only confirmed card-linked offer value, and subtract the annual fee attributable to the card. Do not count a targeted offer until you can see and meet its terms. A high headline rate may have little practical value if your purchases are excluded, you hit a cap, or the redemption options do not suit you.

Compare candidate cards on the terms that change the result
- Eligible spending: Do your usual merchants and purchase types qualify?
- Reward limits and exclusions: Are there caps, category rules, or excluded transactions?
- Offer conditions: Is an offer available in your account, and must you activate it or meet a threshold?
- Annual fee: Does the value you expect to use exceed the fee?
- Redemption: Can you redeem in a way you value, and what do the issuer’s terms say about that option?
- Interest cost: Will you pay the statement balance in full, or could interest accrue?
- Benefits: Does the exact card include a relevant protection, and what are its limits and claim rules?
Check the card’s current pricing, terms, and benefits before applying. Rewards and offers can change; the CFPB explains that issuers may change rewards benefits without the 45-day advance notice generally required for significant account-term changes. Know which purchase protection you are checking
Price protection
Price protection may reimburse an eligible price difference if an item’s price falls after you buy it, subject to the benefit’s rules. It is distinct from protection against damage or theft. Chase’s explainer says Chase does not currently offer price protection: What Is Credit Card Price Protection?
Rank #3
Purchase protection
Purchase protection may cover eligible items against theft or damage, subject to exclusions and card-specific limits. Chase’s explainer describes a 120-day claim period for eligible claims, with a 90-day period for New York residents; those periods should not be assumed to apply to other issuers or cards. A Visa Signature label alone does not establish that a particular card includes a benefit or determine its terms. Visa’s U.S. Signature overview lists potential benefits and directs cardholders to their issuer for the complete Guide to Benefits. Credit card companies are not required to offer a grace period, although most cards provide one on purchases. If your card has a grace period and you are not carrying a balance, paying the statement balance in full by the due date can avoid interest on new purchases. If you carry a balance, new purchases may accrue interest, depending on the account terms. The CFPB explains how purchase interest is calculated in its credit card interest guidance, and describes grace periods here.

Use shopping tools as a separate layer
Price comparison and price-drop alerts can help you decide when and where to buy, but they are not card rewards.
