Start with the multiplayer details, not the screenshots: check that everyone can join from their platform, how many people can play at once, and whether you need separate devices or a host online. Then choose the shared activity your group actually wants—working on one farm, visiting an island, or exploring across platforms.

Check whether everyone can play together

A game being available on each friend’s device does not automatically mean those friends can join the same online session. Confirm cross-play for the specific activity you want, as well as the player limit and any platform-specific requirements. “Co-op” alone does not answer those questions.

  • Platform overlap: Identify the systems your friends own, then look for an explicit cross-platform statement covering the mode you plan to play.
  • Simultaneous players: Count the people who want to join at once, not everyone who might take turns.
  • Separate access: Check whether each person needs a device, game copy, account, or online subscription.

Compare games by how the group plays

Game Best fit Group size and setup Key consideration
Stardew Valley Friends building and managing a shared farm Up to four players in the co-op details described by creator ConcernedApe; Nintendo’s Switch listing specifies one to four online players. One player hosts and must be in the game for friends to play on that farm.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons Friends visiting and socializing on an island Up to eight people on an island online; each player needs a system and game. Online play also requires a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online. Island progression includes responsibilities held by the Resident Representative.
Disney Dreamlight Valley Friends on different platforms who want to visit one another’s Valleys Gameloft confirms cross-platform Valley Visits and DreamSnaps together as of the August 21, 2024 Dapper Delights update. The cited cross-play statement does not establish every platform’s setup requirements, visitor limit, or behavior in every mode.

Choose the kind of shared activity you want

Stardew Valley: a shared farm project

Stardew Valley suits a small group that enjoys dividing up a common project. In ConcernedApe’s August 1, 2018 multiplayer update, the creator says the game supports up to four-player co-op. Players join a host’s farm and share world progression and main-story progress, while inventories, skills, relationships, quests, and recipes remain personal. Nintendo’s Canadian Switch listing describes inviting one to three players and lists one to four online players.

The host arrangement is the main scheduling issue: the host has to be in the game when the group wants to play. The cited Nintendo listing establishes Switch availability and player count, not cross-play with every other version, so check the specific platforms before assuming a mixed-device group can join.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons: island visits and decorating

Animal Crossing is a better match for a group interested in visiting, socializing, and developing island spaces than in jointly progressing one farm. Nintendo’s support FAQ says up to eight people can play together on an island through local wireless or online play. Both arrangements require one system and one game per player; online play additionally requires a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online.

The Resident Representative has certain island progression responsibilities, and that role cannot be reassigned. Nintendo also documents up to 12 people online on a Slumber Island when all players own Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. That larger limit is edition-specific. The FAQ also says only one island can be created per Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 system, which matters if people in a household share a console.

Use a quick decision process

  1. List the group’s devices. Separate games everyone can access from games that explicitly allow the relevant platforms to join the same session.
  2. Set the live player count. Compare it with the game’s stated simultaneous-player limit, paying attention to edition-specific limits.
  3. Choose shared progress or drop-in visits. Pick a common farm project if coordinated progression appeals; choose island visits if the group prefers a social, decorating-focused structure.
  4. Check who must be available. For Stardew Valley, decide whether the host can reliably be in-game when friends want to play.
  5. Confirm the cost and equipment for each player. In particular, account for Animal Crossing’s per-player system and game requirements and its online subscription requirement.
  6. Agree on pace and mood. Ask whether the group wants gentle farming, decorating, and conversation or a cozy game with more challenge. “Cozy” is a matter of preference, not a universal intensity rating.
