Start with your laptop’s recommended adapter wattage, then check how much power the charger can deliver to the laptop when your phone and tablet are plugged in too. A charger’s headline total wattage is not necessarily the amount available on one port—or the amount each device receives when several ports are in use.

There is no single wattage that fits every travel setup. A 65W USB-C Power Delivery (PD) GaN charger is a useful search starting point, not a universal recommendation: some laptops need more, and multi-device charging can reduce the power available to the laptop.

What wattage charger do you need?

Use the recommended input for your exact laptop model as the sizing anchor. Then compare it with the charger’s laptop-port output for the way you expect to use it. If the laptop’s maker recommends 90W or 140W, for example, a 65W charger may not meet that target. Depending on the laptop, a lower-power adapter may charge more slowly or trigger a slow-charger warning.

For USB-C-charging Macs, Apple says to use an adapter that supports USB PD and recommends at least the minimum adapter wattage for the best charging experience. Its recommendations vary by model; some 16-inch MacBook Pro configurations use a 140W adapter. That figure does not apply to every MacBook or to laptops from other manufacturers. Apple’s Mac power-adapter guidance is a model-specific example of why you should check the exact device rather than rely on a broad laptop category.

How to choose a charger for all three devices

  1. Find the laptop’s recommended adapter wattage

Look up the exact laptop model, year, and configuration on its manufacturer’s support page or product documentation. Note the recommended adapter wattage and whether USB-C PD charging is supported. Use that wattage as your baseline, rather than assuming a charger marketed for laptops will suit yours.

  2. Check the output for your intended port combination

If you might charge the laptop, phone, and tablet at the same time, find the charger maker’s output or power-sharing table for that exact combination. A total maximum such as 65W describes the charger as a whole; it does not guarantee 65W on the laptop port while other devices are connected.

Apple’s 35W Dual USB-C Port Power Adapter illustrates the difference: when a Mac and an iPhone or iPad are connected together, Apple specifies up to 17.5W for each. That split is specific to this adapter, not a general rule for multiport chargers. Apple’s adapter guidance shows why you need to check the allocation for your candidate charger.

  3. Confirm USB-C PD and cable capability

USB PD lets a compatible device request power from a compatible charger; the charger does not simply force its maximum wattage into every device. The USB Implementers Forum describes USB PD as enabling more flexible power delivery alongside data over one cable. Its USB PD Revision 3.1 announcement describes support for up to 240W over a full-featured USB Type-C cable and connector. That is a standard capability, not a promise that every charger, cable, and device combination will reach that rate. USB-IF’s USB Charger (USB Power Delivery) page explains the standard.

Check the charger’s output profiles, whether it includes a cable, and whether that cable is rated for the power you want to deliver. A cable that works for a phone may not be suitable for a laptop’s requested power. If your existing cable is compatible and adequately rated, there is no need to replace it just because you are buying a new charger.

  4. Verify the phone and tablet separately

Do not assume every phone or tablet needs the same wattage. As Apple-specific examples, Apple recommends a third-party iPad USB-C adapter with at least 15W output and 100–240V AC input; its guidance notes that specifications can vary by model and country or region. For iPhone 15 and later, Apple says a 20W or higher USB-C PD adapter can provide faster charging. These recommendations do not establish requirements for other brands or models.

Check the exact phone and tablet guidance, and make sure you have suitable charging cables for them. A charger can serve multiple devices if its ports, power allocation, and cables are compatible, but their charging speeds may differ. See Apple’s iPad charging guidance and Apple’s iPhone charging guidance for those Apple examples.

  5. Compare portability and destination compatibility

There is no universal size or weight threshold for a “compact” travel charger. Compare the manufacturer-listed dimensions and weight, the plug arrangement, port placement, and whether the charger covers your planned device combination. Check the plug format and input-voltage range against the destinations on your itinerary; destination compatibility cannot be determined without knowing where you are traveling.

GaN is a common charger category and search term, but the cited standards guidance does not establish that GaN by itself guarantees a smaller, lighter, or better-performing travel charger. Compare the actual specifications rather than treating the material label as a performance measure.

What to compare between charger candidates

Check What to verify
Laptop output Single-port output against the laptop maker’s recommended adapter wattage.
Shared output Power available on each port when two or three devices are connected in your intended combination.
Total versus per-port power Whether the advertised total output is divided among ports, and how the charger allocates it.
Charging standard and profiles USB-C PD support and the output profiles supported by both charger and device.
Cable Whether a cable is included and whether its power rating suits the laptop’s needs.
Travel fit Plug format, input-voltage range, dimensions, weight, and port layout for the destination and packing setup.
Safety and compliance Compliance information stated for the market where you will use the charger.

Is a 65W USB-C PD GaN charger enough?

It may be a practical starting category if your laptop’s recommended input and the charger’s shared-output table both support your plan. It is not enough to know that the charger advertises 65W total: verify the laptop-port output when the phone and tablet are also connected. If your laptop calls for 90W or 140W, look at a higher-output product class and confirm its multi-device allocation.
